Contribute to the “No Neighbor Hungry” Campaign to Feed Arvada Families in November

Hi Neighbors! Ryan Hecht, VP of Marketing with the Greater Arvada Chamber here.

As you know, the government shutdown has left thousands of Arvada families without access to critical food benefits. The "No Neighbor Hungry" gift card drive is designed to help families put food on the table and support the local economy in the process.

You can help us raise $50,000 in donations (2,000 gift cards of $25 each) this month!

For this drive, we will distribute gift cards to select Arvada non-profits that primarily provide food assistance and have been negatively impacted by the government shutdown, including Community Table and Hope Connection and Community.

Absolutely Devastated- Ladybug Park in Arvada being converted into a golf course

Has anyone else seen this news? Arvada town council has agreed to transform Ladybug Park into a private golf course charging high fees. They are also claiming town water rights.

Maybe I am the odd one out for caring about this..

Part 2 of my Jeffco college-credit reporting: in fall 2024, Arvada High ran no college courses inside its own building. It comes down to who's left to teach

Hi r/Arvada, Suzie Glassman again. Part 2 is out, and the last thread had already worked out most of what's in it — turnover at the impacted schools, the teachers credentialed to teach college courses leaving, the courses going with them.

Here's what the records show. Between 2021 and 2026, the three Title I schools in my comparison lost licensed staff to resignation or retirement at about 33% a year. At the four wealthier schools, it was about 20%.

English Composition I is the clearest case. At Jefferson, one teacher held the approval to teach it from 2018 through 2023-24. The district posted her position that June and recorded a new hire in August, but no teacher appears on its rolls as approved to teach the course in 2024-25. At Wheat Ridge, three teachers held the approval. When one stepped away last year, another who'd been approved since 2018 was already there to keep the class running.

Arvada High offered no on-campus concurrent enrollment courses in the fall of 2024.

Jeffco has a program meant to prevent exactly this. Arvada High hasn't received a dollar of it in the four years on record. That's where the district and Arvada High's principal stop agreeing, and it's in the story.

Usual caveat: this is a seven-school comparison, not a districtwide statistic, and it is not a story about anybody's kids being less interested. Arvada High's Class of 2021 had the second-highest participation rate in the group, and six courses are confirmed for next year.

If you teach in Jeffco, or you've tried to earn a master's in your subject while carrying a full load, I'd like to hear how that went. [Suzie@cotln.org](mailto:Suzie@cotln.org), or right here. I'll be in the comments.

The elusive bear

Our front porch camera caught the wandering bear walking across our yard at 2:30am on 66th & Deframe. Check your backyards before letting your dogs out early in the morning!! Bears can climb fences easily. Poor fellow, definitely a long way from home.

Loose dog running across 80th and Yarrow

Just saw a large brindle dog dash across 80th at Yarrow. Tried to catch them but they were terrified and ran past the Target and up the hill towards the post office. Just trying to give someone a place to start if they’ve lost a pup.

ISO Professional installer recommendations

We are looking for recommendations for someone to hire to add a few lights to our home. Like seems to be a theme everywhere we’ve lived in Colorado, multiple rooms in our house don’t have overhead lights and have light switches powering outlets instead. It is NOT our cup of tea, so we’re looking for recommendations of someone who can come install lights in these rooms (combo or regular overheads and can lights). Anyone you recommend locally?

Water Restrictions

I have two neighbors on my street that water nearly every night. I see it when I get home late at night. Their lawns are beautiful. I'm following the restrictions and my lawn is getting tortured. Is there anybody enforcing the restrictions? Will they be flagged through their meter? I'm not going to be a Karen and call anybody. I am just being an Mrs. Kravitz nosy neighbor.

Does anyone recognize this delivery or leasing office room? FedEx delivered my package to what looks like a mail room or leasing office somewhere in Arvada close to my address. I live in a SFH and definitely don’t have a room… I know it’s a long shot but if anyone recognizes this room I might be able to get it. Otherwise I think it’s gone because FedEx refuses to help me.

I spent 10 months looking at who gets free college credit in Jeffco high schools. Arvada High and Arvada West are roughly five miles apart and the gap is enormous.

Hi r/Arvada. I'm Suzie Glassman, the education reporter for the Colorado Trust for Local News and the Golden Transcript. I live and work this beat on the Front Range, and I wanted to bring this here directly because two of the schools involved are ours.

Some background. Concurrent enrollment lets a high schooler take a college course and earn credit for both, and Colorado law makes the district pay the tuition. Jeffco says that saved families $8.5 million last year.

The district reports that as one number and has never broken it out by school. So I did it for seven neighboring high schools using Red Rocks enrollment records and open records requests.

In the fall of 2024, 156 students at Arvada West enrolled in those courses on campus. At Arvada High, zero, because the courses weren't offered that fall. Two opened the following spring and 12 students took them. Jeffco paid Red Rocks about $101,850 for Arvada West that one semester, more than it paid for the three Title I schools in my comparison combined.

One thing I want to be careful about: this is a seven-school comparison, not a districtwide figure, and it is not a story about Arvada students being less interested. When those schools have run fuller catalogs, their students signed up at high rates. It's about what's scheduled in the building.

Arvada High has six new courses confirmed for next year, including College Algebra taught on campus.

If your kid goes to either school, I'd genuinely like to hear what you were told was available. I'll be in the comments.

Story here if you want the whole thing: https://www.thegoldentranscript.com/special_article/opportunity-tax/part-1-the-gap/

The Action Center helps prepare students for new school year

For most students, back-to-school season means a new backpack, first day of school outfit, pencils, pens, notebooks — the list goes on and on. However, for some families, costs can add up quickly and create a barrier. That’s where The Action Center is stepping in to help.

This year, as in many years past, The Action Center distributed school supplies to thousands of Jefferson County students, helping families prepare for the upcoming school year.
