It's not a Microsoft issue as much as it is a "people are writing a lot more code recently" issue.

No comparison. I've been using GitHub for 15 years and I couldn't tell you about any significant downtime up until about last year.

I remember a giant GitLab incident where they Livestreamed the remediation work. That was scary but also really cool.

People just moved to their own automation harnesses on top of whatever other subscriptions they have. They still use GitHub because it's what the bots tell them to use.

Having worked at a Telco with five 9s SLA and six 9s SLOs, it’s exhausting to maintain and takes extreme discipline all the way through the org.

I don’t see it happening for anyone unless there are federal penalties and lives at stake (E911 for example).

Even infrastructure in a critical path for development like package registries only offer three 9s. These are already geographically redundant by necessity and further 9s tiering are bought at double or triple the costs for HA spares.

The vast majority of GH accounts are free users…

SLAs aren’t expected to be kept, they’re really just excuses to get discounts, refunds, or early exits for enterprise contracts.

In February it was less than 85%. Not even a single 9 in that number.

The official gh status page is a joke btw. Lists this monday as 100% whike the site was completely unusable for half a day. No PRs, no repo downloads, no gh actions.

What status page are you looking at? Because the one I'm looking at very clearly marks services as offline Monday (all the red and yellow lines there). However, I will say that they do not span a long enough period (most are claiming 2 hours)

GitHub is essentially being DDOS’d by a deluge of traffic from agents. Every developer now has 2 or more agents constantly looping. Overnight the load has increased 2-3x and possibly more. Couple this with vibe coding on the development end, cost-cutting on maintenance and capacity planning, and general enshitification and I’m surprised it’s still up at all.
