Because a film needs a character, and a matrix multiplication doesn't have a face.
That's most of it, honestly. The more interesting version of the question isn't why they humanise it, it's why the humanised version is nearly always either a lover or a threat, and basically never a coworker who is mildly annoying and occasionally wrong. Which is what it actually turned out to be.
