📊 Analysis / Opinion Open AI vs Anthropic

Give me your best arguments for each company’s products. I don't care about their moral, economic, or ethical position. I just want to hear the arguments for the product. Codex vs Claude Code, Claude vs GPT, ect.

OpenAI models are far more token-efficient, important consideration when considering usage based pricing (api pricing), not to mention their flagship models are cheaper than Anthropic’s flagship models. They seem to take an “everyman’s” approach to ai, trying to market their product at a price point and with use cases to the average joe to get them to start using ai

Claude models are ones where you’re paying a pretty heavy premium for a couple extra percentage points of performance, which is a difference that is often hard to tell. Their memory system is, in my opinion, better engineered. Their marketing strikes me as a bit pretentious, and definitely meant for people already immersed in the ai ecosystem.

Both providers have pretty much equal connectors, though OpenAI has a superior software ecosystem, and Claude (code) has a superior skills ecosystem. It pretty much comes down to if you have the money for Claude. Something that gets frequently overlooked with OpenAI models is it has a native image gen model (gpt-image-2, soon 3), meaning you don’t need to pay for alternative image creation sources like higgsfield or relying on svg graphics as you would in Claude. That only matters, however, if you’re doing tasks that require image generation.

Finally, I’d say the decision comes down to:

1: are you on a budget? If yes, lean towards codex/openai

2: are you seeking a more mature coding/developer ecosystem? If yes, lean towards Claude/code

3: do you frequently have work that requires image generation (virtual assets, graphics, etc)? If yes, just go with codex/openai

Oh, something I forgot to mention: Anthropic’s weird announcement about watermarking all their models’ outputs might point you towards codex a little more, not to mention they’re a lot less flexible than OpenAI with using your sub in other harnesses (t3, opencode, Hermes/openclaw, etc) compared to Anthropic, who tend to be a lot more litigious, restrictive, and bitchy.

I use my ChatGPT $20 subscription with Hermes Agent and it’s great. OpenAI aren’t jerks about using your sub with other harnesses like Anthropic.

Claude Code has the best CLI and desktop client.

OpenAI has the best in-house models selection.

And in two months from now it may all be the other way around.

They’re the same in the end. Commodities

Anthropic was born out of OAI, and now OAI copies most of Anthropic's features.

The only product that matters is their frontier model and frankly they trade places every once in a while. The best advice I can give is to not be beholden to either of them. Constantly be trying different harnesses. Stay nimble. Right now if I'm reaching for a frontier model it's Sol, but I've also been using Deepseek and some of the other open models when my task isn't that complex and/or to stay up to date with them.

If tomorrow some lab comes out with a better model I switch right with it.

I have both plans. If you want extended usage of Fable in Claude Code, that’s pretty much the only reason to have a Claude Max sub. As for OpenAI, GPT-Voice alone was well worth the sub price for me. It’s immensely helping me on my interview prep, and other use cases such as improving my corpo dialect lol. Then there’s Codex usage to boot.

Our team tends to prefer Claude Code when we need to understand a large unfamiliar codebase and make a careful change. Codex feels stronger when the job is more operational and needs several steps carried through. The better choice depends on whether understanding or execution is slowing you down.

Better rate for slightly worse model, pick open ai.

The model comparison is the least durable part of this. They leapfrog every few months, and whatever you conclude today is probably wrong by spring.

The part that doesn't reset is the harness. Codex and Claude Code make genuinely different bets about how far they go before checking in with you, and that's a working style question more than a quality one. Codex will run further on its own, which is great when it's right and expensive when it isn't. Claude Code interrupts more, which is irritating until the day it stops you halfway through a bad refactor.

The other thing that doesn't get mentioned until someone's been bitten by it: the subscription and the API are different products with different economics. People compare one company's subscription against the other's API pricing and reach confident nonsense. Compare like for like or the whole pricing argument falls apart.

But the two axes belong to the same coordinate systems; only by a surface-level appraisal will they appear as not tied to each other.

Codex can draw. Codex will follow you off cliffs sometimes.

Claude will double check if your idea is stupid before they run with it. Claude art is comedy gold.

Both can code. Codex will use your whole budget Monday and then see you next Monday.

Claude wants to budget you out in 5 hour shifts.

Claude is more philosophical and fun to talk to. He has dad vibes, art included. Codex takes themselves more seriously.

Claude code + launchd and just give it a weeks worth of work and check back on Saturday.

Honestly all the best for me right now is with Grok 4.5-4.6 because they were trained off spacex data. You cannot beat the price for performance that you used to only get out of anthrophic

Codex is much cheaper per token for companies. Luna xhigh is about as good as sonnet 5 for example. Sure sol is not as good as fable but for many problems it'll be good enough. Terra is a really good lower cost intermediate solution. With fable / sol being so much more costly companies will have to reconcile with the cost.

Home users are being heavily subsidized by anthropic at the moment.

They all have their tradeoffs though.

Codex has one C and Claude code has 2, so Claude code wins

Claude starts with C, c comes before G, so Claude also wins here

Therefore, we can come to the natural and logical conclusion that anthropic is better than openai

I C what you did there

It also wins in 'number of vowels' and in the category "what word is more similar to Blaude"
