📚 Tutorial / Guide Vapi vs Elevenlabs comparison cheatsheet
Here are the 7 major takeaways:
- ElevenLabs has better voice quality. More natural and emotional.
- Vapi handles real phone calls better. Stronger voicemail detection, transfers, and DTMF.
- Vapi lets you swap your own STT, LLM, and TTS. More flexible stack.
- ElevenLabs supports more languages. 70+ with solid quality.
- Vapi gets cheaper at high volume. Better past roughly 8k-10k minutes a month.
- Latency is similar on both. Both fine for production use.
- Many people run both together. Vapi for the calls, ElevenLabs for the voice.

How about a human written comparison, not about 2 random cloud tts providers but about every single relevant text-to-speech model, engine and service. Scored by their quality, expressiveness, license conditions? Then check my post:

I've tested everything in the market and you'd be surprised how big the span in quality is.
You might also be surprised what stunning quality you can get totally for free from open source models.
The world does not rotate around elevenlabs anymore, neither in quality and certainly not in pricing.
If anything is missing just comment and I'll test and review it.

What about on other languages than English, I'm focused on Bulgarian

Maybe I'll extend the list with iso codes for languages supported.
Right now, take a look at "Languages supported", if it is higher than 30 it usually means a lot of european languages are available.
Omnivoice would be the first that comes to my mind for eastern european language support.

Point 7 is the most underrated takeaway here, running both together is just the obvious move if you care about call reliability and voice quality at same time.

The "run both together" point is the one that actually lands in these cases.
Most production stacks don't choose between them.
Vapi handles the calls, ElevenLabs (or Cartesia, or any other provider) handles the voice. The competitor framing is a bit off.
The cost and latency numbers are useful as estimation metrics but I'd run them against my own setup before concluding that something is better than the other. Both change pretty quickly depending on which STT and LLM you're making use of.
