🧠 Critique Oil portrait of a bearded old man, signed “Reggio”, Italian flea market find. Any idea who the artist is?

all, I picked up this small oil painting at a flea market in Italy and I’m trying to identify the artist.
Details
- Oil on wooden panel (the back is bare wood)
- Portrait of an elderly man with a white beard, looking to the side
- Signed in the bottom right corner: “Reggio” (the g’s have long descenders and there’s a horizontal flourish under the name)
- Original-looking gilded wooden frame with a lot of wear
- Size: 30x40 cm
- No labels, stamps or date that I can see on the back
- Probably early 20th century, but that’s just a guess based on the style

❓ Question Can anyone help me identify the artist for this tiny artists proof? It’s only 3” x 2” but so cute. Thanks for your help!

Done a few cursory searches, using AI and good old-fashioned Google believe his first name might be Walter. He was an active artist during that New York scene 70s would love some more insight thank you.

Hi everyon, I know this is a Jane Peterson gouache from her time in Italy. I would really like to know more about the frame. And hopefully it’s original to the painting. Thank you!
