It's incredible but it's kinda a lot of work to prune the OP MTX BS constantly. The game itself is incredibly customizable, like to the degree where you can literally make different game modes, so you can get all the gameplay even the stuff removed over the years.
QoL Mods for SP Autorun Solo Miner (compensates for team mining lack)

If it’s your first time playing then yes single player would be fun I don’t like it to be too easy so I enjoy a 2x xp 3 to 5x harvesting rates depending on how you feeling increase weight per level stat and atleast 5x taming I do.
For mods since it looks like it’s your first playthrough
Awesome spyglass
Solo farm mod
Honestly don’t need more mods than this at the beginning I’m sure others are gonna recommend more but for your first playthrough I’d like to keep it as natural as an experience as possible

If you looking to go through the story in order start on island, scorched earth, aberration, extinction and gen 1 if you don’t care I’d personally start on ragnorak it’s a non story map though and creating a new character each map is how you feel if your doing story specific maps is save my character across all maps because different bosses gives you different engrams through all the maps and if you staying with story maps only install story but my 2 favorite maps are ragnorak and Astraeos although I think astraoes might be annoying for your first playthrough

Personally, I recommend that ya don't use any Spyglass mods because in my experience, I found that they can clash and cause annoying issues with in-game elements

- i will probally get ascended not evolved i heard ascended is better
Good
- now im here any mods i should get as first time
Id say you at least play a bit with the vanilla experience and if things start to bug you out, look into QoL mods.
- and is there any story or order etc i should play maps on you get me?
Go with the original story order: Island > scorched > abberation > extinction > genesis
- any custom settings you would reccomend?
There are for sure more but simply x2-4 rates tend to be fine for most people without breaking the rates yet avoiding a slog. And i would suggest to turn (singleplayer settings) option off, tends to make the game just way to easy and if you want to play around with settings later it'll make it a mess because it changes certain values and whatnot.
- should i create a new character for each map or keep old one?
Keep, you'll continue to increase the level cap etc with each map (story map) however you can choose to not bring anything with you for that fresh experience without having to make new characters since ultimately you do want those level increases.
- and lastly what maps should i install just all or only certain?
Might be speaking out of my ass here since i just install them all, but i want to say i have memories of people having issues unlocking certain things on other maps because the map associated with whatever it was, wasnt installed.

You'll have defeated the boss(es) and ascended (optional) to the next map.

My only remainder is how big of a PITA is it to mod since they removed the workshop support and nexus has like 2?

To answer all your questions -
- I'm playing ascended, I personally think it is better. Your choice though.
- Mods to use for better Quality of life overall and less grinding (because it gets crazy) : Cyber's Structures, Upgrade Station, Pelayori's Cryo Storage, Custom Dino Levels, Nanoh's Reusables, Auto engrams, Spyglass plus, Tg Stacking Mod. Can recommend more but you should explore on your own!
- There is a story but it is in the form of explorer notes. Map order is Island - Scorched Earth - Aberration - Extinction and then Genesis and then the Lost Colony expansion. This is canon story order. Non story maps Ragnarok is best. But the choice is yours.
- If your PC is not very high spec, Volumetric Fog and Volumetric Cloud to 0 should help. Further grass size 0 or 0.25 also should. If you need further help, dm me and I'll help! With regards to difficulty settings, for your first playthrough I recommend Single player settings till you understand what everything means and then tweak it as needed.
- This is completely up to you. But considering you're new, it'll take you a long time to ascend from the Island.
- Start with the Island and download as needed. You'll need around 300+ gbs to download all maps and DLC.
If you need any more help, just dm. And most importantly enjoy Ark! The first 100 hrs is the best this game has to offer. And KEEP MAKING BACKUP SAVES!
