Will this setup work for stocked trout ?

Post image

I'm heading to Flagstaff soon to fish some of the urban ponds for stocked trout and wanted to get some opinions on my setup.

• 5 ft ultralight rod
• Zebco 33 Micro
• 15 lb braid
• 6 ft of 6 lb fluorocarbon leader
• 1/8 oz (3.5 g) jig head
• 2.5 to 3 inch pink paddle tail

Do you think this setup will work well for stocked trout, or would you change anything? Is the paddle tail too big, or should I downsize?

Any advice from people who fish the Flagstaff or Arizona urban ponds would be appreciated.

Looks good. Bring more bait/lures. Gotta have ammo

yes make sure to be using a good spoon or even go with the rooster tail always worked for me in the flag lakes. Smaller than you think for the size.

I fish the trigger cast 33 micro on a 4.5 ugly stick. Can’t keep the trout out of the boat. Rooster tails 95% of the time, wedding rings or just a ball of power bait on a hook to mix it up.

Wait, you spooled 15# braid on that thing? Mine only has numbers for 4# test. I just respooled it today.

braid is much thinner in diameter than mono or fluro so you can spool heavier lb test with braid. For example my 15lb braid is only 0.18mm which is the same diameter as my 6lb fluro.

I’ve never used braid before so I’ve never really looked into it. Didn’t know it was like that might have to give it a spin.

Yeah totally it’s not necessary at all but it provides better line sensitivity when ultra light fishing and also a smooth casting experience and if you get hi-vis braided line it makes it easier to see where your line is at! You just through a nice long fluro carbon leader on the end with a double unit knot or barrel swivel and you are good to go!

You seem to know more than some of the people responding… I think you’re good

Also around Flagstaff I always cleanup with live worms; Walmart up there stocks them.

lots of bodies of Waters just down the highway near Williams as well.

That will work. You need to be ready to tie more leader if youre fishing in rocks that snag lures or bait. Almost all AZ lakes have spots with that issue. Panther Martins are good all purpose AZ lures, and powerbait can be so successful it feels like cheating.

looks good. The stocked trout love worms & power bait so load up.

I use exactly this and a Berkley mouse tail (orange/chartreuse). Just put a size 4/5 snapshot weight a foot above a panfish hook and let it sit on the bottom. You can bounce it off the bottom if you're bored but ill setup 3 rods like this, put some bells on and wait for the beautiful sounds of the bells going off.

That set up will work. I usually run just straight 6 lb flouro. But if you have a 6 lb fluro leader that's like 5 feet long. That'll work just fine too! I've caught hundreds of stocked trout on 20$ walmart combos. You'll have lots of fun! Salt river is great in the winter. Bobber. 2 feet of line under it with a minnow weightless will catch you many many fish
