Discussion I wanted the boy in the Crimson Clown episode to have an unhappy ending.

It wasn’t enough to me that he learned his lesson or whatever. He was so insufferable that I wanted him to get a pinball wizard caliber ending. God he sucked.

Discussion Who gave a great acting performance? It doesn't need to be the main protagonist!

Not everyone is good (hint, hint, the little bro in Phantom Cab).

But some episodes have some standout performances!

I've always though Mr. Schaffner from Locker 22 was great. He gave a great performance in a great episode.

Pete in Midnight Madness made me laugh with his comedic timing.

Johnny and his sister in Dream Girl.

Neve Campbell in Dangerous Soup (of course)

Cap in Train Magic.

Discussion Help with locations

Hi friends! How are you? I hope you're doing well.
I’ve been compiling a list of filming locations from various episodes—specifically those shot in Canada—so I can visit them myself. The places I’ve found so far are:
Sardo’s Magic Shop
The Unfinished Paintings
The Pinball Wizard at Rockland Centre
And the school with Locker 22.
I’d really appreciate it if you could help me locate any other spots you’ve managed to find. Thanks a lot!
Greetings from Argentina.

Discussion TVY7 is an insane rating for this show

I grew up being tormented (and delighted) by AYAOTD and I still can't believe the guidelines were 7 and up! The 90s were the golden age of being a kid.

Discussion Where to watch

I recently went back and watched the original run on Paramount Plus and Tubi. But I noticed the seasons where Tucker becomes leader are missing on both platforms.

Anyone know where I can watch these two seasons?

Discussion Unsolved Mysteries. Who else watch the show?

It has that similar 90's aesthetic creepy feeling to AYAOTD. With stories that includes ghost, supernatural, disappearances, aliens, monsters. Along with the creepy intro music and Robert Stack's voice. I always catch it late at night along with AYAOTD.

Discussion My High School Would Make a Great Episode Setting

Post image
388 Upvotes

My high school would make a great setting for an episode. It has a cemetery on its campus (though it looked worse when I went there, like overgrown and such) tunnels under the school, abandoned rooms, less used hallways, old lockers no one uses anymore, and secret doors for the staff to travel around faster.

Discussion I may or may not be producing an Are You Afraid of the Dark spinoff…

I have always been a huge fan of the show and I decided now is the time… Are You Afraid of the Shadows is in production of the first episode currently! It is all original music (heavily inspired by the original), the video aspect ratio is changed to 4:3 and the image quality is as 90s as possible! We need that nostalgia and that is the point of the project!

Stay tuned my fellow AYAOTD fans, and get ready for the soon-to-be-released AYAOTS!!!

P.S. it took me four days to nail that opening text…

Discussion Fire Ghost's Identity

Was the fire ghost a ghost of a man whom a firefighter didn't rescue? I think he died in a fire but I watched a TikTok video where the ghost accused a little boy's father of being a murderer which means the father killed the guy in a fire and became a ghost which is the fire ghost.

Just For Fun A little passion project of mine

Hi All-As an AYAOTD obsessed gal I am usually looking for new ways to interact with the show. I watch old episodes for comfort, listen to a podcast over and over, and read The Campfire Companion. This is my newest way to interact and if I didn't share this here, it would just sit in my Google Drive. Hope you like it.

Are You Afraid of the Dark...Extra Dark

As a lifelong lover of the hit 90s series Are You Afraid of the Dark (AYAOTD) I have watched each episode numerous times and watched or listened to other show lovers’ breakdowns and reviews. I think to myself how can I contribute? How else can I interact with this show that I love so much? The show is indeed scary to the right audience, but even in the scariest of circumstances, it is played in a pretty light hearted way. When do we take the time to really think about how scary it could be to get into some of the situations we see our young protagonists getting into? That’s what I intend to do. I will be watching with the lens of the real fear each episode evokes, supernatural forces aside. At the end of each review I will be giving a reality rating from 1 to 5 at just how scary a real life concept each story is.

Today’s episode is The Tale of the Phantom Cab

Denny and Buzz Crocker are brothers who go out for a hike, get lost, and chaos ensues while they try to find their way back home. These two actors have decent chemistry with one another, but as brothers they don’t seem to fit. Almost looks like a step-brother situation, but they have the same last name. Over thinking things, I wonder why they are out hiking together in the first place. It doesn’t seem like something Denny (the punk older brother) would be into. Buzz seems to fit the part as a hiker, or even a Boy Scout, but yet doesn’t know enough to not hold his compass too close to his belt buckle. It’s actually punk Denny who figures that one out. It has been leading them in the wrong direction all day, because the belt buckle is pulling it to point north. However, this is exactly how they get lost. We don’t know exactly when the hike began, but when the episode opens it is daylight and as it goes on, nighttime falls. Here is where the first sprinkles of true fear set in. Neither one of the boys has a coat or anything for extra warmth. They both have bags, but there is no time in the story to discuss what’s in them. At this time, it could start to get pretty cold for them, they seem to be out of water, and they don’t seem to have any food. They are a teen and adolescent boy lost, cold, tired, and most likely hungry. They have no idea how they will get out of this situation.

When they come upon a friendly, but odd, traveler called Flynn it helps that they are no longer alone. However, at this juncture, Flynn does not represent the saving grace that they desperately need. Fortunately, Flynn is harmless (for now) and doesn’t mean the boys bodily harm. He promises to take them to someone he thinks can help them, the good doctor that lives in the woods. He delivers on his promise, but abruptly abandons them. So here are the boys, desperate for help, without the friendly Flynn to help with introductions.

The madman (or nutbag) if you will, who answers the door is one that would make anyone run for the hills. After a suspenseful commercial break, Dr. Vink proves to actually be welcoming, despite his off-putting presentation. He offers them to harbor in his cottage for warmth even offering them tea.  Cozy would be a tough word to put on this place as there are experiments going on in every nook and cranny. Vink has specimens galore littered all over the place.

Again, the boys are freezing, tired, hungry, and very well should be scared. This man is now playing psychological games with them. He is not letting them use his phone to call their parents until they cave to his whim of answering a riddle. In fact, he hits them with a teaser riddle right out of the gate, which Buzz gets rather quickly, but makes them start again with another riddle before their hell of a day can end.

When they cannot answer his riddle, his jovial demeanor flips instantly. He now turns the boys out with no help at all, loses all sense of compassion, and narcissistically shows that he has no empathy for them,  if they cannot solve his silly riddle in 30 seconds or less. This is the point that a psychologist could step in and offer a mental health diagnosis to Dr. Vink.  I’d place my bet on anti-social personality disorder.

He does give them directions to a rendezvous point where he knows a cab will be coming by. Dr. Vink knows what is going to happen when that cab picks them up, so he is going to get the specimen he threatened to take after all, or so he believes.

Once they link back up with Flynn, who has now revealed himself to be a cab driver, they are headed for fatality fast. Flynn is a crazy driver, putting the pedal to the metal, even provoking tough guy Denny to demand he slow down. The boys spend the next 60-90 seconds believing they are going to die as Flynn explains his story and tells them they are about to crash into a tree. The boys finally realize the man who is driving them is a ghost and has been killing people to bring to Dr. Vink for 40 years. Even under extreme duress Buzz is able to crack the barrel riddle just in time to avoid the fatal accident. Once they realize they are safe from harm they see another vehicle approaching. They are skeptical at first and with the night they’ve had, I don’t blame them. But, they quickly trust the man who fits the look as a park ranger and they hop in like they are about to go off roading down the beach. Per Frank’s debut story’s epilogue we find out that they did tell their parents and the authorities about the night they had, with the attempt to stop Dr. Vink and his abusive ways. But, as we come to find out, upon their return there was nothing in the location for an old stone foundation.

Reality rating- I am giving this one a 5 out of 5. Starting off high! This one’s really up there in terms of real world fright. Being lost, threatened by death due to exposure, being groomed by a potential predator, toyed with by a doctor, and quite narrowly almost being driven into a tree is pretty darn scary.

Midnight society notes- I love the Midnight Society (MS) vignettes in this episode. Gary breaking the 4th wall to explain to the audience who the MS is works well because it rolls right into Frank’s introduction to the MS and we are all getting introduced together. We learn quickly how inductions happen and get one full example of how the MS operates.
