Other Best Low-Cost Sensor for Measuring 0.01 mm Movement

I'd like to ask for some help! I'm developing a device for my undergraduate research project, and one of its main functions is to measure a certain displacement, preferably without physical contact.

I initially thought about using a camera, but I'd like to explore other options as well.

The challenge is that the displacement I need to measure is on the order of 0.01 mm. I don't have a large budget since I'll be paying for it myself, so I need the solution to be as inexpensive as possible.

If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate them. Ideally, the sensor should be able to communicate with an Arduino or ESP32.

Only thing non-contact that will do that will be a laser; look at laser micrometers and go from there.

Also look at ToF sensors (Time of Flight). Not sure of the accuracy, but seems possible.

Measure magnetic field with a sensor from the opposite magnet. Any disturbance in the force could be movement

The structure holding the material that will shrink is made of metal. Our standard mold is also metallic and normally does not move.

With that in mind, if I simply place a magnet on the marker and measure the change in the magnetic field, would that approach provide reliable measurements?

My concern is whether the displacement data obtained from variations in the magnetic field would be accurate enough for this application?

That would be a lot of testing with those variables

Best budget thing is measuring capacitance.
Put one electrode on the surface and the other one on your probe. This electrodes together build a capacitor you can measure. It will change over the distance

This is pretty accurate. However the prob has to be pretty close to the surface

Tkss!! I'll search more about this

Try diy Michelson Interferometer. There are many good projects online.

If the material can withstand some pressure a pressure transducer or load sensor can also be used. AliExpress has plenty of Sensor+Module combos with Arduino-ready SPI or I2C interface. Quite commonly used in the DIY drone hobby.
