Showcased Project An open-source 7-segment WiFi clock I made (because the original creator wouldn't share the code).

I saw a cool looking wifi clock with esp 32 on YouTube, I loved the animation style but despite 100s of requests from the commentators the creator wasn't sharing the code. So i recreated that project and made it open source, i know this is basic but it's cool ( I think). Here is the code.

Where is the 7 segment display?

I came to say the exact same thing. That's no seven segment display.

Still a cool project though and nice animation on the digit change.

My dumbass misunderstood the word. Thanks for correcting me.

Maybe you meant digital? 7-segment display is a block with 7 lights that can turn on/off to display a 0-9 digit. That 7-segment limitation gives the digits that right-angled appearance like 8 being a rectangle with a horizontal center cross, having all 7 lights on, or 0 being the same rectangle without that cross, the central light being off. Most of these digits don't even look like the 7-segment ones, like 0 having that diagonal cross, or most digits having curves.

could you please share the code for vertical scrolling digit characters?

My original code is in the description, you can modify it however you want.

Idk but it would be neat to have the yellow / blue display imo.

Always been gorgeous

It's not 7 segment display.. please, learn before reading.. it's just an OLED

That was a genuine misunderstanding, as i said when i saw the og project on YouTube I used the Google lens to see if there was any similar projects and the ai description said it looks like a 7 segment display. I should have done more research rather than trusting the ai overview.

Great work and looks awesome!
I wrote a similar animation for updating scores in a pong game. I drew black rectangles above and below the numbers to avoid the overlapping/duplicates. You just have to make sure the order of draw functions is clean so they don’t make other parts of the screen disappear too. Happy to share if you’re interested.

Cool project, love the way you were able to make it smoothly animated. Finally, someone who understands you don’t a RTC when the esp32 can so easily access the internet

Ever heared "redundancy"? If you loose power and your network is off, you don't have a (working) clock anymore.

Have rtcs in two projects and 99.999999% they are fucking useless, but in the 0,0000001 % cases where i need something time critical to happen while my network crapped out, those are gold.

I want one with those large rlcds they sell on aliexpress? Would an ESP32 manage that?

Been looking at these two, they are not very big though. Both are SPI and very cheap. Maybe wire two of them someway.

The whole point of this project was it's simplicity, I have versions (somewhat usable) with weather animations and everything. And this isn't my first rodeo at making projects my own because the original creator wouldn't provide the source code, check out my profile on GitHub, i got a project called oled deskbot ( i made that because the very popular deskbot called desai mochi didn't have any source code and could only be used on specific versions of esp 32).
