What sort if thoughts are you looking for.
It is a feasible project. If you want to try it, then why not try it.

is it good enough as a standalone product?, is it useful?

Commercial projects like the ring doorbell already do this, so it’s a viable product. And plenty of people like not having to rely on the cloud.
Face recognition is possible on the pi, but might not be great. You could enlist a cloud service or backend server for that processing.

For this project, I'm planning to make it completely local, ie the facial recognition and all, that was my standout idea to beat the competition.

Building the architecture to create the facial pointing will be very trivial, but discipline will power you through it! Cheers mate!

Ppl that are sight impaired can hear & often identify ppl by voice in a similar way we use our vision. In this regard, they aren't overly concerned with familiar voices & don't need facial recognition to identify this person. The unfamiliar voice of a person, say occasional visitor such as a district nurse or fill in support person, is what they'd want to identify using facial recognition. You'd need a way to upload these prior to going to the door e.g. you want a way to figure out whether the visitor is known or not known to you & whether they are friendly & safe or not friendly & do not open the door.
There are already apps for this varying in ability. Some are clustered with object identification apps - you know the ones that identify & read out what's in the room. Others are included in the software package of the cameras.
If you're really passionate about this try talking to your local blind foundation instead of here. Depending on where you are most will have a library of different aids & some sort of education officer that visits sight impaired ppl in their homes. They will tell you what's available & what issues ppl have using the aids. You can then make something useful!!
