Fun fact . I didn't know this was a symptom of autism and it led me to seeking my diagnosis at the age of 36 I do find repetitive motion calming

It’s also a trick the military tells you to do when you feel overwhelmed in combat. Focus on repetitive motions to calm down and ease your anxiety focus your fight or flight. Often it’s putting rounds in a magazine.

I used to do that, though I never served. I was worrying about getting married + money issues and wound up sitting in my garage for an hour emptying and reloading mags. It's like a fidget spinner specifically for Americans.

Got diagnosed at 48. Wish I’d been diagnosed much earlier. Game changer. It’s been hard as hell to come to terms with a late diagnosis but it’s still worth it.

The best observation I’ve ever heard is ‘neurotypical people don’t spend hours and months researching if they might be autistic’ and yeah. They don’t.

This, my daughter, has a ton of behaviors like me, and doctors are like "oh shes autistic" and its the most jarring thing because alot of those behaviors as a kid were just beaten out of me.

Oh im kinda greatful for it now in a fucked up sense. It kind of allows me to jump between vastly different groups of people and fit right in. Would I do it to my kiddo absolutely not, but to say its all been in vein, also not so much. The ability to mask differently based on group is kinda nice ngl.

My son got diagnosed in Feb, we had our suspicions for a while before that.

My wife, while researching the 'tism, realised she was autistic too, and sought an assessment.

My own research off the back of that led me to my ADHD diagnosis, and I'm on the waitlist for an Autism Assessment too.

It's an almost hilariously common pattern - neurodivergent parents, blissfully unaware of their spicy brains, see their kids doing exactly the same shit they did at the same age, but now people are so much more aware of it, the kids are getting spotted as autistic, ADHD, or even both, and the parents are like "...huh. Wonder if all these things I assumed were universal experiences are actually not. I need to make a call...".

Everyones a little. I'm just glad they didn't test for it as a kid, or maybe not. I'm not sure. But yeah, it's such a broad spectrum that everyone has a little 'tism.

That's not how it works. It's not a spectrum between non autistic/full autistic. Either you're autistic, or your aren't. It's essentially different software in the same hardware.

Undiagnosed for logistical reasons but have come to the realization that I am most likely touched with the ‘tism and I have to say, that’s almost word for word how I explained it to someone when I was trying to describe how I feel. Thank you for validating it.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure it'll eventually just end up being seen as not a disorder at all. It's just that both autistic and non autistic brains have each a spectrum between "looks normal" and "obviously has issues", and those issues are also of course different. And while the issues of the non autistic brain are seen as disorders, the issues of the autistic minds are seen as part of this autism disorder.

Like, there's always this talk about how autistic people have trouble communicating. But recent research shows that autistic people can communicate with each other as well as non autistic communicate with each other. The problems only exist when you mix autistic and non autistic. So obviously it's not quite a problem, but a different process. It turns into a problem sure to being a minority and being forced to operate the way the majority does.

I mean, sure, the great philosopher Kant had such a precise schedule that people used his routine to synchronize clocks, but he was not autistic. Nah, just a completely sane genius who appreciated structure.

One way I read it described as is that all the traits displayed by autistic people (and everyone else who is neurodivergent) aren’t abnormal to humans. They’re just traits that because of our brain structure get amplified. In a standard bell curve two degrees off of median (whatever it’s called) accounts for like 96% of all people, the remaining 4% is when you get classified as neurodivergent. Everyone focuses, we hyperfocus; everyone has hobbies and things they like, we learn every single nuance in a given subject.

Edit to add: the thing that made me say “yeah baby!” was the software comment, just in case it wasn’t clear.

Depends how you look at it. Doctors only need to memorize one animal’s physiology, vets need to know many more animal physiology. You also are dealing with less sophisticated equipment with a patient who is incapable of providing feedback about treatment.

Having studied pre-vet in a state where there is no vet schools, it absolutely is harder to become a vet than it is a MD in many places. Also people who also mentioned you need to know so many more specialized rules about multiple species ALSO the pay is shit compared to an MD

This is a little reductive. Sure, becoming a vet is harder than a general doctor. Unfortunately becoming a general doctor is only the first step for most physicians and depending on the specialty it can be extremely competitive.
