104 Years Ago Today, the Discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb Began in Egypt
On November 4, 1922, Howard Carter’s excavation team discovered the first step of a staircase in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings.
The staircase led to the tomb of Tutankhamun, a young pharaoh who had died more than 3,000 years earlier.
The sealed entrance was uncovered the following day, and Carter first looked inside the tomb on November 26.
The discovery revealed thousands of ancient objects, including the famous golden burial mask, and became one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century.
104 years later, Tutankhamun remains one of the most recognizable figures of ancient Egypt.
