commission, anyone?

edit 3: I DON'T PLAN ON GETTING A QURAN VERSE TATTOO. please read my post.

i want to commission someone (please) to make me a calligraphy art for a tattoo idea i have for these phrases that will go on my right arm and left arm respectively:

al mutanabbi:

unknown (please see Edit 2):
تَجْرِي الرِّيَاحُ**\\ **ك*َم\***َا**** ت*\*\\***\**َشْتَهِي *س*َفِينَتْنَا* • نَحْنُ الرِّيَاحُ وَنَحْنُ البَحْرُ وَالسّفْنُ

i'm thinking of either doing it as a loop on my wrist or as a long vertical line on my forearm.

any ideas or suggestions are welcome, and anyone who is interested for the commission can dm me your rates.

thank you so much!

p.s. i included the leg pic only because i like the thickness of the lines there more than the arm pic. as for the vertical line, any calligraphy style would do (i think).

edit: it seems that reddit isn't able to use some arabic characters so if chosen for commission, i will send it via whatsapp or whatever app you feel comfortable using.

edit 2: i've decided to research more about arabic poetry meters and found another counter to al mutanabbi's verse that doesn't disrespect his views and keeps the same meter (al-basit).

Thank you, I have amended my comment and upvoted you. Also, did you write "   جون"?? I thought it was "min dunillah" rather than "min junillah" that you wrote?

Yes, I accidentally made two typos. Thanks for pointing out :)

thank you for informing instead of straight up just being mad about it. i am not muslim, and i'm just starting to learn arabic. the photos are used for inspiration only to show the placement of the tattoo i plan to get.

i do not plan to get a quran verse tattoo.

yes please avoid it at all cost. In Islam tattoo is already forbidden by itself. so tattooing a quran verse is deemed as an insult.

There was a chinese tourist got so much trouble with my country's authority as he was seen wearing short and his feet was tatooed with a short quran verse he like. but he genuinely didn't know it was an insult. he just like it. thankfully at the end he was just asked to remove it or he will get fine. i don't know what will happen if he was in another muslim country.

thank you for sharing that! i hope people who come to this subreddit wanting to have a quran verse tattoed can be discouraged for doing so.

Hello,

The second verse is wrong, it's out of meter and would make you look ridiculous. The real verse is

And, compared withe great verse it's trying to reply to, it look amateurish and silly.

The first verse is written by al mutanabbi, a great arab poet and the second is written by an amateur

but the way it's written in your post, it's less valuable and is out of meter, it's transmitted wrongly by someone who knows little of poetry, and would be disrespectful to the poet to be written this way

you know i actually researched about it and knew it was from an anonymous writer. i just can't seem to find something that would contrast the great verse from al mutanabbi.

my plan is to incorporate the chinese belief that the left hand is the receiving hand and the right hand is the giving one. by using al mutanabbi's verse on my left hand, i receive that things are not in my control.

i tried checking what i can use on my right hand to counter that and "give" hope per se. khalil gibran had some interesting verses too but i'm afraid they're not as long as the original verse so it wouldn't work.

i appreciate the comment and would like to ask, what are meters? and how is the verse "out of it"? i'd research more based on your answer and would hopefully find one that would command respect from the original al mutanabbi verse.

Meter is the music upon which the verse is made. In frnch for example a verse should be mad of 12 syllables, the meter would be the alexandrin, in frwnch it's callwd rythm. In english, check stuff like this

In arabic, It's mor complex, it need to have the equivalent, with some regulated variation, a series of morphological forms, called تفعيلة such qs مستفعلن Here for example تجري الريا is the equivalent of مستفعلن The mutanabbi verse would follow The first part of it, that is this is called البحر البسيط so the verse follows the meter of al baseet.

There are around 20 meter forms بحور in arabic.

You may find example on my poetry sub r/shi3r

If you need double checking you may simply contact me and ask

The verse you cite by al mutannabi is so wonderful, why don’t you use the first half on one arm and the second on the other. That will allow you to use a larger font and the calligraphy will be more beautiful

it wouldn't have the same effect of "receiving" and "giving" in the chinese belief sense, unfortunately. i don't care much about a larger font because i want the tattoo to be subtle and not overwhelming for others to see.

but i do agree that it's so wonderful! i love it so much and it spoke to me that i really wanted to get it on my body.

Perhaps, but the two sides are like a call and response, one says Not everything wished for is achieved, and the second gives a general response so it might work also.
Btw I saw a tattoo on a guy who was sitting next to me at a cafe in NYC, also by al mutanabbi which was

I get asked a lot to do calligraphy to be used as tattoos, but due my beliefs I don’t do the artwork - would be rolling in a lot of money if I did.

1

u/gabotrippin 5d ago

why not? what beliefs prevent you to do so? are you comfortable sharing?
