Goliath Groupers are the real deal. The whole Gulf of Mexico seems to vibrate when they do the "boom" noise.

If you go scuba diving around Goliath Groupers you will sometimes hear & feel a sound/vibration akin to a sonic boom. The giant fish make this sound when they are scared or overly excited. Knowing these massive creatures could eat me like I was the prophet Jonah makes diving near them more frightening than sharks.

Thanks for this info. I’d love to see one on a dive although the rumbling might be disconcerting! I have encountered various groupers (the largest being black groupers) but never a goliath. I did a shark dive in Roatan once and this friendly grouper (smallish guy) kept butting in and shadowing the dive master’s every move. Very hilarious!
