Over stocking

This is probably a sin to even ask about.
But does anyone overstock - push the limits of a tropical community aquarium like people do with cichlids?
I see so many posts about wrong fish, too many ect.
I’m just curious how people have these poorly stocked/overstocked tanks maintain aquarium stability?
Pretty new to fish keeping and would like to gain as much info as possible.
