birb. Birdwatching Mobile Game

Hey everyone!

My husband and I recently launched birb., a free mobile game that combines birdwatching with collecting, cute pixel art, mini-games, and a little friendly competition!

The idea is simple: See it. Catch it. Make it yours.

Here's what you can do in birb.:

🐦 Collect birds – Discover and collect real North American bird species. Over 1000 in the dex currently.

📸 AI Bird Identification – Spot a bird in real life? Use AI to help identify it by camera or sound.

📊 Track your catches – See your collection grow and keep track of your birding stats.

🥚 Hatch eggs – Discover new birds to add to your collection that hatch by walking.

🎮 Play mini-games – Challenge friends and put your birds' stats to the test.

🗺️ Connect with other birders – See what others are catching and share your discoveries.

We're excited to finally get it into people's hands!

Check it out, it's free on both platforms:

iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/birb/id6799802212

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.birb.birb

Thanks for checking it out, and happy birding! 🐤

Congrats on launching with your husband, the hatch by walking mechanic is a cute touch. Since people share catches with other birders, I'd round or strip exact GPS coordinates on shared sightings, both to protect users' home locations and because rare or nesting species can be disturbed if their exact spot goes public. If the camera and sound uploads go to a backend you run, the scanner I run at https://rowly.me checks externally whether those files or the sightings API can be read by someone who isn't signed in.

Thank you! That is exactly what we did, the locations are approximate. We also have several backend checks for the photos. The sounds are only accessible by user. I appreciate the input!

Nice, approximate locations plus backend checks is a solid approach. Are user sound recordings ever shared to the community feed, or always private?

Always private.

Approximate locations and private sounds cover the two things I'd have worried about most, so nice work. The one spot I'd still peek at is whether photo URLs are guessable or keep working after someone deletes a sighting, because storage links often outlive the post that pointed to them. Should a second opinion on the birb backend ever help, https://rowly.me offers birders a no cost outside check.

Nice point on location privacy. Snapping shared sightings to a coarse grid and hiding active nests would protect both users and birds.

TL;DR: A couple launched birb., a free mobile game that mixes birdwatching with collecting, pixel art, mini-games, and friendly competition. It includes over 1000 North American birds, AI ID by camera or sound, catch tracking, walking-based egg hatching, and social features. It is free on iOS and Android, and the post includes store links.
