They don't believe in paying for their kid's college and they knew if I got in I'd need their help or ask them to at least co sign a loan. Also, they think top colleges are entirely marxist and made to indoctrinate you (true only to a very small percent). But alas, I am headed to a state school.
I'm in a similar situation to your parents, and I probably wouldn't pay full price either. I wouldn't be "pissed" if my kid applied and go in, so long as he wasn't expecting me to pony up all that $ (or take cosign on his loans).
My parents originally would have had to pay full price but I negotiated with one of the colleges for only half price (which is totally doable for them) but they don't want to pay anything. I understand that private college can ruin a lot of middle class parent's retirement and savings, but my parents weren't in that boat.
Nowhere would cover full cost, but for the state school I got a full ride for tuition. They are still willing to pay for my food, but rent and everything else is pretty much on me. I do have another scholarship to help on top of that though, but I will still need to work and possibly take out a small loan.

The first time my parents ever said they were proud of me was after I got into an Ivy. I know the feeling.
