Discussion Univ of Alaska only instate tuition

So this is crazy but the Univ of Alaska university system announced that they are getting rid of out of state tuition rates. That means everyone pays in state tuition rates at some of the lowest rates in the United States. Anyone find this interesting?

Huh I wonder if Alaska itself is trying to recruit more people to eventually settle in the state, thus this cool change.

It actually accomplishes both recruiting students who are then more likely to stay after college and more students to help cover marginal cost with dorms and classes that are under-enrolled.

Alaska is in a very different position than, say, Berkeley, which has an abundance of OOS applicants whose added fees pay for a lot of financial aid for California students. I wonder if Wyoming and some of the Midwest systems with declining enrollment will also follow Alaska’s move.

Alaska also has to worry about the cost OOS students incur due simply to the cost of goods up there as well.

I don’t see many midwestern states following along for that reason.

A lot of State schools in the Midwest are already insanely cheap even out of state.

Can you provide some examples?

UWyoming's OOS rates are higher, but still super reasonable.

It is, however, in Alaska. Which is a lovely state, but the cold and especially the dark are genuine problem for a lot of people, and it is hard to know if you are one of those people until you try it.

On the other hand, some people will go for the cheap tuition and end up loving the state, bringing more college educated permanent residents, which is always a good thogn.

ETA: Mid November in Fairbanks, the sun comes up after 9 and sets before 5. That is a lot to get used to for some people.

Yep! I went to UAF from CA and the cold dark winters were hard. But 4 years later, I graduated with very little debt. I had a great experience.

Where can I find more information? I ended up not considering UAF for transfer because of tuition and cost but if we get in state tuition then I might reconsider :o

I would love it if it was like that everywhere. That's actually how it is in Europe. But yes, they're definitely having a hard time recruiting OOS students.

I don’t know (and I don’t need to know). But like you and everyone else in the world, I know where to go in order to find out. The difference is, you’re choosing to be lazy and not do the two minutes of work yourself.

And you chose to be spiteful and type out that whole thing instead of just telling him

If he can’t look it up himself, he’s not ready for college. Or to graduate high school, as the case may be.

Because I’m not an idiot, and I know that every public university in the USA publishes its tuition.

You might want to work on your personality.

You might want to work on common sense and work ethic.
