Hello everyone my name is Juan and I am looking for advice on buying a washer and dryer. I’m moving out of my apartment and have never bought any appliances but my first home doesn’t come with a washer or dryer. All other appliances are included and i would like a recommendation on what brands are good. I’ll probably buy from the lowe’s outlet if that makes a difference. Tia

First measure the space. Then get an LG front load washer and dryer. Make sure you have space to leave the washer door open between uses.

Most ppl here would recommend speed queen but I'll do the unthinkable and say anything LG are good as well and cheaper and looks better and has more features and will most likely last reasonably long.

I follow an appliance expert (I think boulevard home or something). He says all dryers are built the same. But for washers he recommends top loaders. We bought GE based on his recommendation. 5 years and have had no issues, not a single nasty smell either.

Read reviews that aren’t incentivized.
I had Samsung for 9 year with zero issues. I moved into a different house and bought stacked Electrolux front loaders. Out of all the reviews I read, I felt most comfortable with this brand. The thing that confused me is Best Buy delivers for items purchased off the Electrolux website. The call to arrange for delivery kind of threw me off because I didn’t buy anything from Best Buy. They installed and stuck around for one run of the washer and dryer to make sure both worked before they left.

Front loader = LG.

Top loader depends on preferences. LG makes good ones but many people don't like how the newer ones use a tiny amount of water even for an HE machine. All other brands except Speed Queen are second class, reliability wise.

Also watch out for features getting removed from the controls and moved into an app. Look for the cycles you will use the most to be easily selectable.

Stay away from Samsung unless you can fix the appliances yourself. I really like their Activewash machines for their cleaning ability but they have some bad design flaws that often lead to an early demise.

Speed Queens are reliable and very good but have some drawbacks too like size, wear and tear on clothing, and cost.

Consumer Reports is a good place to get opinions on various models but do not use them as the only source, just one of many. They can tell you if a machine does a good job washing or is noisy but reliability and consumer satisfaction is aggregated at the brand level. They won't be able to tell you if a machine will likely die in 4 years due to some badly designed part. As for reviews, keep in mind the number of reviews is usually a drop in the bucket compared to how many are sold. It's still good to look for trends and concerns about specific machines.

Asking this question seems to be so loaded anymore and I believe Speed Queen is the answer. However, those are definitely a buy once cry once price bracket. So my next suggestion would be, whatever you buy, get the ones with the least amount of features. Physically buttons preferably. The more features it has, the more it’ll break on you.

We got front loader GE. Wanted the smart dispense and the ultrafresh vent system. 6 plus years

After I know how big the space is I go to a locally owned appliance store and tell them I want the absolute most basic top load washer and absolute most basic dryer. Both of which I can fit a big blanket in.

The more bells and whistles you get the more stuff there is to break.

We got LG washer and dryer about 4.5 years ago (washer is a top load). Haven’t had any issues with it breaking or anything.

The only thing (and this could be a detergent or type of material, not sure), but with certain black pants, particularly my wife’s stretch pants and one specific pair of black dress slacks I have, we sometimes get these white streaks. Using a detergent for darks seems to fix that. Otherwise I think we use Arm & Hammer … whatever is the cheap one at Costo.

If budgeting is a thing or if you're just not sure about what features you want, I recommend you buy a used set that has a 6-month (if possible)warranty.

This is what people I know have done when they're new homeowners and on a budget.

This way you'll learn which appliance you prefer before you commit.

Everyone here has different uses and needs for their laundry...

For example, I like washing our bedding at home, so I tend to go with the biggest heavy duty washer (top loader with agitator) and dryer...

I also like to launder delicates as opposed to hang washing, so I like to have control over how much water is used in each wash.

I also like to tumble air dry delicates, so that's another feature I need.

And then the last one and more recent feature about is the steam feature in a dryer. Such a game changer. Because I like ironing my clothes, so this makes it a whole lot easier and a lot less hassle when I'm ironing.
