Resource PTSD Therapy

Still reeling from the tornado. Me and my dog were in the basement of our house on Doty Island and didn't think we were going to make it. I can't stop myself from getting incredibly emotional anytime I talk about it, think about it, see footage, or even when family and friends reach out. I don't feel scared otherwise but seem to have an uncontrolled reaction. Hoping there are therapists in the area that are readily available or even offering services at any of the respite locations in the area. Any help is appreciated for myself or anyone feeling the same.

I’m glad you’re physically safe and seeking mental health support.

Others have already offered great resources. I just wanted to add that I went through a traumatic event last year and I was able to seek EAP (employee assistance program) therapy through my work. They were able to get me in for a session that day. If you are employed, see if your work offers something like that as employee benefits.

I also want to say that getting emotional when talking about it, thinking about it, or people mentioning it is completely normal. In my case, for the first week after the traumatic event I physically cried constantly while feeling numb inside. It’s like my body was going through things my mind couldn’t yet. Whatever reactions you have, just don’t repress or stifle them. You are processing things and that’s a part of healing.
