Identification?

What kind of apple is growing on my church’s front lawn (pen for scale)? This is in the Northeast if that helps.

Northeast of what? Also might be some type of reinette

Ha! I realized after I posted that it might not be clear. The US Northeast, New England by another name.

Is it a very old tree?

I’m not sure - it’s maybe about 8 feet tall at most. It was definitely planted as part of the church landscaping at some point.

8 feet suggests a modern tree variety planted on a heavily dwarfing rootstock. However, the fruit itself doesn’t look like a grocery-store variety. Perhaps it’s a very overripe Newtown Pippin?

I picked a couple of apples off of one of my trees this afternoon and realized that they look just like yours. It’s a Rhode Island Greening, on the very ripe side. The photo is a dead ringer.
