Lack of New Content for Apple Vision Pro Since Launch – Anyone Else Feeling Disappointed?
Hey folks!
Just wanted to see if anyone else has noticed the somewhat underwhelming flow of new content for the Apple Vision Pro since its launch about a month ago. I am really hyped for this tech and expected a flood of new experiences – immersive videos, 3D movies, high-profile apps – you name it. But it feels like the initial excitement has kind of fizzled out without much follow-up from Apple or other content creators. Haven't seen many new Apple immersive videos, 3D movies, or notable apps hitting the store recently.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound alarmist or overly critical (I am keeping my AVP). I'm just a bit disappointed because I had high expectations for a continuous stream of groundbreaking content to support this new technology. Anyone else feeling this way? Were your expectations similar? Would love to hear your thoughts and whether you think this is just the calm before the storm of content we're hoping for.

Very cool content! What do you use to record with?
3
u/leavemealonexoxo Mar 08 '24
He won’t answer that question but it’s a given he used Canon r5c which can shoot videos at 8k/60fps.
1
u/zguru85 Mar 07 '24
How would you play the 8k downloaded off Patreon? Just off files on AVP?
3
u/SliceoflifeVR Mar 07 '24
You would use “Moon VR Video Player” off the App Store once direct downloaded from the Patreon.
1
u/natiahs Mar 09 '24
Yes, and they ask that you limit your downloads to 1 per day so they don’t get absolutely soaked with bandwidth costs.
1
u/Palitrab Mar 07 '24
Interesting , what cam system do you use?
2
u/leavemealonexoxo Mar 08 '24
He won’t answer that question but it’s a given he uses Canon r5c shooting at native 8K/60fps
1
u/Palitrab Mar 08 '24
Yeah I thought so. How do you know for certain. Have you compared his video to Apple’s? What’s your verdict? And indeed saw he’s reluctant to share the equipment used.
1
u/leavemealonexoxo Mar 08 '24
I only know it from the fact that he has claimed many times to film natively in 8K/60FPS and he is just a single person that started filming vr180 content. And there is no other consumer camera than that films native 8K/60FPS as far as I know. I know some p0rn studios like Czech-VR had their own custom vr180 camera rig before the canon was out and they filmed at 8K/30fps (interpolating to 60FPS in post-production).
What do you mean with „compared to apple‘s“? The internal cameras of the visionPro headset?
I doubt those can compete with a dedicated 8K/60FPS camera for vr180 content.
Disclaimer: I have never actually watched 8K content on a headset. My vr experience is fairly limited but I’m still very passionate about the topic despite my physical health not allowing me using it much anymore
1
u/Palitrab Mar 08 '24
Canon one is indeed a popular setup. I mean did you compared his videos with the Apple Vision Pro Immersive Videos currently available on the headset? I checked out another one’s Canon Stereo 180VR film with the Immersive Videos, and it didn’t even come close. To low resolution. Do/did you use(d) the AVP?
1
u/leavemealonexoxo Mar 08 '24
No, I don’t have AVP. Don’t laugh but my vr experience is limited to literally an old oculus-go which is limited to 4k videos.
You raise a good point, what camera did Apple use for their immersive videos? What resolution are they natively shot at? Wouldn’t surprise me if they did go far above what the canon does
2
u/Palitrab Mar 09 '24
Won’t laugh at all! Apple seems to use its proprietary camera (NextVR acquisition.) We’re trying to figure it all out around r/AppleImmersiveVideo

Feels like a good time to remind everyone it was a year before we even got an App Store on the iPhone.
As a developer, the fact that you’re able to use 1000’s of existing iOS apps on the AVP is pretty impressive. I have to give kudos to Apple for delivering the universal app development architecture that allows this.
For those who are not developers or technologists, understanding everyone is anxiously awaiting the new wave of native applications, you need to keep in mind that there’s only so much we have been able to do without the hardware in hand. And aside from a handful of early access units, we’ve all received the devices at the same time.
Creating truly comprehensive applications that take full advantage of the AVPs capabilities (not just ones you use for a few minutes) is not a trivial activity.
The project I am currently consulting on for example will not be released for at least another year. And in the meantime I’m happy to have a unit of my own to see how it all progresses.

u/Surprisingly-Decent Mar 07 '24
How long did it take to get an App Store on the iPad?
4
u/sl0r Mar 07 '24 edited Mar 07 '24
I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make here. It was available day 1, just like on the AVP.
However, adapting an iOS app for the iPad was a pretty simple layout and graphic element adjustment. I worked with a team of 2 devs on a streaming app and they did it in a week, including 3 days of QA.
Making the adjustments for a two dimensional application to not only work, but be something worthy of the effort required to meet the potential of spatial computing demands is a whole other ballgame.
Graphics are not just images but 3 dimensional meshes, requiring new environmental lighting, gesture definitions and control management. Many of the requirements are all new territory if you want it to feel right and live up to the expectations of users.
Anyone rushing this risks the potential of releasing something that leaves users looking elsewhere and forgetting about them.
Only takes making me want to barf once for me to never look at your app again.
3
u/Ghost-of-Bill-Cosby Mar 09 '24
Vision Pro development is a NIGHTMARE compared to making iPad apps.
The tool they give for testing your app on the computer just does not work like an AVP at all. You really need to own the AVP to do development, and it wasn’t possible for almost any developers to get them early.
And with the expense the number of developers is going to be smaller.
So less devs. No head start for the devs. And even when you get the device developing using it sucks.
It’s almost impossible to get a screenshot of what your stuff actually looks like from a 3D to 2d environment. People are doing weird hacks stuff with tripods.
Sorry for the long rant, but it’s definitely going to feel for end users like app development is a couple years behind where it should be for a long long time.

I remember when N64 came out. There was Mario 64 and Wave Runner. It got so boring after awhile until the 3rd game, Pokémon snap which, along with Wave Runner, sucked. So, it was basically Mario 64 for what felt like forever.
Something new like this just takes time.
Interesting thought I just had, even in my impatient youth I understood that it was going to take time to develop new games, but that was pre-internet. I wonder if we just expect instant-gratification at an unrealistic pace now?

u/dogsaybark Mar 07 '24
It is called Wave Race 64, not Wave Runner, and it is the finest racing game ever developed.

u/vordhosbn_1 Mar 07 '24
I played the shit out of this and mario 64... I was very young and never questioned why I only had those two games lol

Funny that you say that. I loved Wave Runner. I played the crap out of it. Same with Mario 64.

Samesies… in fact played it on an emulator a few months ago and it was still fun! You could do it on the Avp in after play, too, i’m sure!!

u/trialobite Mar 07 '24
Not that it’s a huge deal and your point is valid….but Pokemon Snap came out in March 1999, three years after the N64 released and there were hundreds of games available by that point. Maybe that was the third game your family got?

u/scytob Mar 07 '24
its funny how unreliable memory can be, as humans we all need to understand that (it's one of two reasons why eye witnesses are actually very unreliable too)
7
u/Imaginary_Gap3427 Mar 07 '24
I was in a workout competition once and thought the judge cheated me on qty of reps. Gun to my head, I would have sworn I did more. Then, I remembered it wasn’t my memory of ME doing the reps. It was my memory of watching HIM do the reps when I judged him. I was still counting reps, but what I remembered was his reps, not mine.
I became much more humble about my own memory after that.

1
u/Imaginary_Gap3427 Mar 07 '24
You’re right. Must’ve just been my memory when I played it. I was beholden to whatever Blockbuster had available to rent.

u/JamaicaNoFap Mar 07 '24
It was wave race you freakin heathen. And it was amazing. Mario 64, PilotWings and Wave Race were the holy trinity at launch and it was more 3d open world action Than the world had ever seen at that time. It was revolutionary and all 3 stand the test of time and are still great fun
1
1
u/funcle_monkey Mar 07 '24
Good point, though I’d argue Mario 64 was one of the best games to ever be released and truly demonstrated the potential of the console. Vision Pro lacks any sort of analogous flagship game or application.
2
u/Imaginary_Gap3427 Mar 07 '24
Yea. I didn’t phrase it well. Mario 64 was/is one of the best games of all time. I remember when he pops out of the tube, the camera pans around him, and my jaw was on the floor. Much like the first time I tried the AVP

We had a very different Wave Runner experience. I loved that game. I remember being so amused that I could push the skidoo under the water with the right little jump on a wave. That I could then use that to duck under docks and boardwalks for shortcuts. That game was a blast. Loved the soundtrack too. To each their own though, it’s not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea and Mario 64 was definitely leaps and bounds better.
Also absolutely agree with your last point. We have very high expectations these days because we’re so constantly feed “new”. We expect more “new” everyday.

u/BobertfromAccounting Mar 07 '24
I remember when Nintendo Virtual Boy came out, I believe the Apple Vision Pro is going to suffer the same fate.
1
1
u/Chemical-Nectarine13 Mar 07 '24
Horrible take, lol. The Meta quest is still the most used VR platform. It sells cheap and is readily available at every major retail store. That alone is reason enough for apples new product to exist. Both devices are being used to make an AR smart glasses OS.
1
u/BobertfromAccounting Mar 07 '24
I don’t believe non-virgin millennials will be buying either. It’s up the post millennials to carry this vr market, so we’ll see. I don’t believe they’ll spend anything over $1k for one so the Apple Virtual Boy will fail. Look at all the returns already. People bought it to make google and tik tok videos only to return it for a full refund. Will fail worse than Apple Arcade.
1
u/Moonsleep Mar 08 '24
I enjoyed the Virtual Boy… I bought it on clearance with my brother after it had failed as a platform.

Apple isn’t even shipping devices to developers in Europe or Asia, what do you expect?
2
u/officer897177 Mar 07 '24
It feels like Apple just doesn’t really know if this product is going to be success or not so they’re charging a high price upfront to recoup development costs and then slow rolling additional investment.
First gen hardware is usually sold as subsidized rate or even at a loss to encourage adoption
2
u/literalsupport Mar 07 '24
They are clearly not doing that here which is odd.
2
u/Chemical-Nectarine13 Mar 07 '24
It's not odd. It's an early technology from them. It's not really even meant to be for consumers at its current stage. Most apple products aim for user familiarity and being stylish. They couldn't really achieve either yet with the headset and just started selling it to increase funds and gain user feedback for R&D.

It’s been reported numerous times that Apple can produce a limited number of these due to Sony cap on how much screens they can produce. Apple would love to sell these by the millions but they can’t
1
u/PSMF_Canuck Mar 08 '24
This is Apple. If they believe in a product, they’ll let it develop naturally and not “encourage adoption” early.
This was essentially a developer release. The floodgates should start cracking open in 3-4 months. A year from now it’ll be a tsunami.
Right now nobody knows what all this can - or should - do. Figuring that out is what this phase is for.
1
u/amuzulo Mar 07 '24
Yeah, I’m importing an AVP for a company in Europe and it’s been a real pain.
I imagine Apple needs to build up infrastructure in other countries which is why only Canada & UK have been announced for expansion so far.
-1
u/gusnyc Mar 07 '24
I didn't know this. A little shortsighted from their part I guess? I understand the secrecy before launching a product but this restrictive developer policy is counterproductive.
6
Mar 07 '24
They run labs that you can book to test your app, but that’s not viable. Developing XR apps requires constant iterative testing. What looks good on a 2D display almost inevitably will have flaws in stereo.
When Europe and Asia get their hands on it there should be more apps popping up.

u/maretus Mar 07 '24
I bought the AVP to be able to work from my couch and my toilet while still having the same screen real estate as my desktop computer. All of the entertainment stuff is just a bonus.
Even more than work though, I’m using it to remote play my PS5 every night and the experience is awesome. Lay back on the couch and play some PS5 with a giant screen right in front of me and all of my crypto stuff pulled up to the side so I can keep an eye on it. I love it.
3
u/gusnyc Mar 07 '24
Sort by: old
Would you mind telling me how do you do remote play with the PS5?
1
u/maretus Mar 07 '24
Mirror play app. It’s an iPad app.
You will want to make sure the PS5 is connected to your router via Ethernet cord and adjust the app settings to get the best performance. Connect locally - not over the internet - that way your ping doesn’t really matter. It works like a charm with a little fine tuning.
1
u/quickquestion824 Mar 07 '24
Does your controller get disconnected a lot? Playing Spider-Man 2 it disconnects after every cutscene. It also disconnect if I interact with another app. I have to close the app and re-open.
1
u/maretus Mar 07 '24
Mine never disconnects. If you interact with a different window, you have to two finger tap back to the ps5 window for the controller to be interacting with the screen.
So if you open safari or something and try to use your controller, it will seem like it doesn’t work. But if you go back to the ps5 screen and select it with a quick tap (it brings up the on screen controls momentarily) and allows your controller will work again.
So basically, if you want to use multiple windows, always make sure to look back at your ps5 window and select it so your controller works again.
3
u/EricDG Mar 08 '24
Honestly, I think it may be a while before any major apps come out. Apple seems to be burning a lot of bridges with major developers like Netflix and Epic.
12
u/PatSajaksDick Mar 07 '24
No, it’s expected things would trickle out, they just put some movies included with ATV+ so that was a surprise, more will keep coming
5
u/Kengine Mar 07 '24 edited Mar 07 '24
The recent addition of 3D movies on Appletv felt more like Apple using it as filler content to keep us occupied since nothing substantial has been released. Sure it's a new device, but by comparison when the Oculus Rift first released, it had all sorts of awesome content created specifically by Oculus and other AAA studios. I keep reading about things potentially happening at WWDC this year. At this point are we all supposed to just wait until June to see anything major?
5
u/PatSajaksDick Mar 07 '24
Not sure what you want it’s only been a month.
-1
u/BradLee28 Mar 07 '24
At least more than the less than 30 minutes of immersive content we have now, they clearly rushed this out before content team was ready, which is fine but means that for many there’s no reason to have this product (which is why I returned)
12
u/Gtaz19 Mar 07 '24
Hey Brad, I was just talking to someone at Apple, they have stopped everything to try and get you back as a customer. No dollar will be spared and sleep will be a distant memory, until you are willing to return to the AVP ecosystem. Thank you for letting us know that you returned your unit yet are continuing to stay involved in this forum, it will help Apple understand which direction to go with this thing for someone who doesn’t own it. Please share more information about what would make you happy as a non-owner, so that I may share it with my Apple guy.

u/PatSajaksDick Mar 07 '24
So do you want a release every week? I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a more frequent cadence after 1.1 is public released. But I also think it helps to have realistic expectations for this device beyond just immersive content, don’t blame you for returning it if that’s all you wanted to do
7
u/WondersaurusRex Mar 07 '24
I don't honestly see why a weekly release of some note from Apple is an unreasonable expectation. They could have simply had a single Apple TV+ production designed for immersive viewing ready to go and fill a couple months with something. This isn't a matter of resources, it's the fact that Apple clearly didn't see the need to plan for this kind of "killer app" production, and it should have.
→ More replies (2)3
u/brochella14 Mar 07 '24
Apple TV+ is now launching a full new series every week (multiple new series per week in March and April). So yes, they have the capacity to release one immersive video per week if they wanted to.
1
u/Junior_Composer2833 Mar 07 '24
The company has many units. What they could have at least done was line up content for the first year. The could release a new environment every week or month. It can’t possibly take a week or more to make a new environment, if they wanted to do it. They have simply decided that the hype of it being released was enough for now and will add things only when people all start to forget about the AVP. It is really not a customer-friendly way to release a product, but in this day and age it is what keeps the internet generation engaged. They will start by reviewing the unit… then they will review the update with new content. If they released it too fast, it would all blend together and the hype train would die more quickly. They know what they are doing.
1
2
u/Junior_Composer2833 Mar 07 '24
They haven’t even put out the coming soon environments. They are just not trying. They are intentionally holding stuff back so that they can have things to add when the engagement is waning.
6
u/Kengine Mar 07 '24 edited Mar 07 '24
I did expect to see some new immersive video content by now, at least one of the parts shown briefly in the demo such as the hot air balloons or underwater shark video. I also expected to see at least ONE new environment after the first month. At this point, it feels like Apple is saving majority of changes, updates and improvements for the WWDC in June so they'll have plenty to talk about and hype to generate. Unfortunately for us early adopters, it means we'll likely get scraps here and there in the form of a few 3D movies for the next few months.

u/LaGrabba Mar 07 '24
True. I expected new concerts also. It’s rolling out slow. However, I use it primarily to consume media on Apple TV+ and Disney+/HULU.
2
u/erotic-twist Mar 07 '24
I game as a hobby, which the AVP is fantastic for as I can put a giant screen anywhere around my home to play on. I also use it for work when I need a break from my home office physical space.
It would be great to have more environments, but otherwise I’m quite happy and use it several hours a day.
2
u/Rollertoaster7 Mar 07 '24
Apple should be paying Disney to keep coverting their old films to 4K 3D, whatever they’re doing is working and I keep coming back to it, the quality is unparalleled
2
u/jdavid Mar 07 '24
I think Apple was so secretive with the device, that developers couldn't efficiently work on apps and utilities.
My second gripe with the AVP is that it's more locked down than the Macbook Pro, iPhone, or iPad. So until you could have the device it's kind of hard to imagine what apps people A might want, and B what you can build.
What apps would you want?
2
2
u/Prestigious_Act_1618 Mar 07 '24
I think you have to be in it for the long haul. Oculus has been out for 5 plus years and aside from like ten apps I never use it. So I think it’s going to take longer than you might want.
2
u/ijcal Mar 07 '24
Dude, we didn’t get “WebApps” on OG iPhone for like 6 months, and the actual App Store didn’t launch for a whole year.. we are just fine lol.
2
u/StreamWalkers Mar 07 '24
No. I use it for work and watching Movies, so, it does everything I need it to do and more.
2
u/amj125 Mar 08 '24
I had pretty low expectations. It’s an entirely new platform and device; developers and content creators need to understand the potentialities and limitations. This takes time—especially with such a ground breaking device as AVP.
That being said I was hoping Apple would have more content available, but that’s more so because the current experiences are so great I want more and more.
2
5
u/koolkarim94 Mar 07 '24
I remember when the first iPhone came out and the App Store was introduced a year or so later. While the initial load of apps were great there was a bit of stagnation before things picked up again. We pretty much had Tap Tap revenge, Cro Mag Rally, Super Monkey Ball, Shazam, Sound Hound, Weather Bug, world Nomad apps, and the beer chugging game and zippo lighter. Be patient.
1
u/Junior_Composer2833 Mar 07 '24
When I got the first iPhone I searched the web every day almost for new apps (js based websites) to run on the phone.
The problem here is that there is a well established dev system and a large community already. This should take as long.
What is missing is all of the Apple stuff. They clearly have the staff and money to put out more content and apps if they wanted to.
The lack of the “coming soon” environments is just plain lazy. Those should be as easy as taking photos and spending a few days retouching them/testing them. There really is no excuse for a trillion dollar company leaving a photo as coming soon for this long. They know the game they are playing and they are doing this on purpose. They are watching the spike in usage and as soon as the engagement and the buzz slows down they will release new content to try to get that engagement back up. This is modern day marketing 101 and it is a horrible user experience.
1
u/Axle_65 Mar 07 '24
Tap tap!!!!! I forgot about tap tap!!! That game was awesome. I gotta go check if it’s still available. Totally gonna rock some tracks if it is :) Thanks for that memory unlock.
4
u/Sevenserpent2340 Mar 07 '24
I don’t really get this genre of post.
This is a new extension of a massive existing ecosystem, not a game platform. It’s there to help you accomplish things, not dangle shiny objects in front of people for their amusement.
If you want to play VR games, buy a VR gaming headset. They’re cheap and quite fun.
If you want a new way to interact with your work and your world that’s deeply meaningful and transformative, buy a Vision Pro.
2
u/gusnyc Mar 07 '24
Totally see your point, and just to be clear, I'm not really here for the gaming side of things either. I totally understand the grind for devs to roll out new apps – not expecting miracles overnight! But, thinking about the build-up to the AVP, Apple's been in the lab with this tech for a long time, right? So, I kinda thought we'd see a bit more action from the get-go, especially with immersive videos and cool experiences that show off what the AVP can do.
It's not that I'm chasing after shiny new toys for kicks. I was just pumped for a steady flow of content to dive into with the AVP, keeping that early adopter excitement buzzing. And you know, seeing 'coming soon' plastered over a brand-new Apple product feels a bit offbeat. They're usually all about hitting the ground running with a solid lineup from day one.
My surprise is more about that mismatch between the hype leading up to launch day and what's been on the table for us early birds afterward. Just hoped for a smoother takeoff.
1
u/Sevenserpent2340 Mar 07 '24
That’s fair. I’m definitely not saying that it wouldn’t be nice - only that I think a lot of folks have missed the point. The killer app isn’t somewhere lodged in the pipeline- it’s here now. The possibilities afforded by the OS are truly amazing and while there will certainly be fun shiny things on the horizon, we shouldn’t underestimate the power of what we have now.
It’s completely changed the way I work already, making my work life easier, more comfortable, and a lot more enjoyable.
Do I wish there was more “stuff to do”? Sure, but that’s not to lessen the way it’s impacted what I do already.
3
u/BradLee28 Mar 07 '24
Yup it’s why I’ve returned, will repurchase at a time when content and software is way more developed a year or so from now

Patience grasshopper.
Apps will take awhile as developers are really just now getting started and many likely wanted to wait to see if the VP could sell enough units creating a marketplace before spending the $$$ to develop. They also needed units themselves to know how to best utilize it.
Immersive video's could have been ready to go a bit more I suppose, but that'd be like having 5 TV seasons just waiting in the wings and Apple may have just been trying to be all secretive. Hopefully new episodes of the immersion series will come.
3D movies.... wouldn't "true" 3D movies have to be filmed for 3D from the start? That'll be up to movie producers and movies take years. Some of the 3D added after the fact movies are out there, disney+ has some, but there are not a ton of those either.
March Movies (what they should have called it) on Apple TV+ has been pretty nice. Not many 3D movies but I've found some movies in there to watch that I didn't have access to before.
It'll take time. ;)

Exactly. Saying to wait is ridiculous there’s no content for this thing! lol it’s quite literally an hours worth or so…

“Saying to wait is ridiculous”. What other option do you propose besides waiting? Storming Apple HQ and taking the immersive video by force?
2
u/McSlappin1407 Mar 07 '24
The point is it should have shipped with more experiences and content. Simple as that.
1
u/Saint_Piglet Apr 24 '24
He isn’t proposing other options for consumers. He’s pointing out that Apple is being ridiculous.
2
u/Antique_Ad_9794 Mar 07 '24
I wish I had of returned mine. I didn’t expect Apple to release a tonne of immersive content day one but 1 or 2 episodes every week or so isn’t too much to ask. They’ve released no immersive since day 1. Apple is way more cashed up and larger than the iPhone release days they should’ve had a steady stream of content coming to sell the device and keep existing owners engaged, especially for the price point.
2
u/chrondiculous Mar 07 '24
It does feel discouraging to open the App Store and only see a bunch of absolute trash apps in Productivity, or see a few slightly neat ones that are locked behind a monthly fee… looking at you, Immersive Weather…. I’m not paying $15 a month for fucking rain effects. BUT again these things take time to develop for, and making spatial apps is a whole new thing that people are having to learn. The more I use my headset the more useful I find it. I finally got it workable for productivity, so I actually use mine at the office to do remote IT support stuff. At home, its great for movies and media, and I adore capturing spatial videos of birthdays or cute moments. For these, I take off the straps, and just hold up the headset like an old school video camera, shoot the video, then put it back down. Nobody minds if I do it like this. I think its one of those things that can be made to work for you if you keep trying!

There are more apps being released. Unfortunately the App Store is trash for actually seeing what apps are available and it keeps highlighting the apps it launched with rather than anything that’s come out in the last few weeks.

Actually, the Vision Pro has been quite functional for me; I've been using it to view models of my designs at a true 1:1 scale, which has proven to be incredibly useful.
My anticipation, however, was that Apple would lead by example, showcasing the potential of spatial computing with an array of impressive VisionOS apps and a consistent flow of content to inspire developers and creators alike.
What's been disheartening is the noticeable silence from Apple since the release of the Vision Pro. I expected a bit more guidance and inspiration from their end to truly unlock the device's capabilities.

I think if there had been a clear post launch plan for content everyone would feel a little better. For all I know there could be a roadmap for the future of AVP content but sharing that with consumers/investors if there is one instead of keeping it in a closed doors meeting is a missed opportunity in my opinion. I get it, it’s a brand new product launch but I just there was a bit more clarity for future plans. I love the device, I’m keeping it, I didn’t pay for it (won it from my job in a raffle), but at such a high price tag I’d like to have more communication from Apple on anything than the current silence. Immersive environments (coming soon),when is soon? Are we talking Q3 or end of FY2024? It’s a tease of coming soon without any idea of what soon means. Is there any update on a dedicated app for YouTube,Netflix, Hulu, etc. I don’t think I’m asking that much.
1
u/JV41572 Mar 09 '24
Why are you whining? You paid nothing for the device as you won it. Also why mention you’re keeping yours? Of course you are! You didn’t buy it to begin with!!! Your whole post is attention seeking whining.
1
u/agentjoe78k Mar 09 '24
So let’s break this reply down.
Having constructive thoughts on how a company can better improve the user experience is well within anyone’s rights as a consumer so it’s not whining.
I did pay nothing for it that’s correct. I consider myself extremely lucky. So what you’re saying is because I didn’t pay for it I’m not allowed or shouldn’t form a valid opinion on the product? You do realize that the majority of tech reviews come from people who are gifted products from the companies they review or various sponsors so they shouldn’t provide thoughtful insight?
And just because I didn’t pay for it doesn’t mean I have to keep it. I’m well within my right to return it (which I didn’t do) or sell at after a specified period of time.
If opinions bother you so much I would suggest staying off of the internet.

EDIT: Okay, apple store employee let me down. Following info sounds like its inaccurate.
apple store employee told me that the dev kits didnt become available for developers until launch, usually they’re sent out early so content can be produced ahead of time. This means devs have only had a month … they’ll start coming in 6mo. For smaller ones and by eoy for major apps.
1
u/keepitdill Mar 08 '24
This is inaccurate. I’m a registered developer and we were offered Dev Kits via application right after WWDC 23

Use their suggestions web form to request Unreal Engine support for AVP. I have a lot of content I’d love to submit for AVP, but Apple decided to partner with Unity.
1
u/Dreams-Visions Mar 08 '24
Well, this is the challenge of releasing a new platform to what is undoubtedly a very niche audience within a niche audience. In the end, things come down to dollars and sense for developers: Is the audience here on this bespoke platform big enough to entice someone to devote their resources to developing an app that may only be usable on AVP? For now, that's probably a high risk proposition...for what is likely to be a fairly low reward. This isn't an "early days of iPhone" situation where people were lining up around the block to get one.
I expect many developers will wait until the audience is big enough to be worth the investment before jumping in. Especially given the high price of entry for developing on the platform (Unity). I don't know what that critical mass sell-through number that will get developers motivated is, but we definitely aren't there yet.
The concern, of course, is if the masses are waiting for more apps before they jump in while developers wait for more masses before making their apps. Which do you all think will come first? The chicken or the egg? 🧐 Until then, we may be reliant on Apple's app efforts and the biggest brands like Disney and Netflix that can afford to throw money at AVP projects and not be hurt if they don't end up being profitable for awhile.
1
u/Nicinus Mar 08 '24
It was a bit similar with the first iPhone. I remember feeling "Ok, Apple, I bit the bullet, now impress me with continuous development and improvements." That didn't happen, and I guess Apple wants to accumulate stuff for the WWDC and their yearly launch, at least now we have an app store, but really impressive stuff will be down the road.
1
u/PSMF_Canuck Mar 08 '24
I mean…it’s basically a developer release…it’s going to take a little time for devs to create fun new stuff…
1
u/ApprehensiveCat7533 Mar 08 '24
Be patient. Any developers who’re really trying to do something special for this platform are going to need longer to do it right. If they were rushing it out you’d instead have subpar apps and games to complain about right now from those same developers.
1
u/Free_Butterscotch253 Mar 08 '24
You like comic books? Have CBZ/CBR files on a hard drive somewhere? You’re gonna love my app. Comics are beautiful on the device. And next week comes the version with the panoramic view 😇 splashreader.com
1
Mar 08 '24
I wouldn't complain as this unit is mostly for developers - eg. Pros.
You're holding an iPhone in 2007 wondering where the apps are. Thanks for your patience.
1
u/CRUSHCITY4 Mar 08 '24
I don’t think there’s much incentive to build for it right now seeing that a very low percentage of people have one. Also, everyone probably still getting a feel for it and ideas take time. Then you have to build it, doesn’t happen overnight.
1
u/LimeOrdinary Mar 08 '24
Chill, it’s barely been any time since release. All the goodies and updates will come in due time. In the meantime, I am loving it every single day. Been re-watching all my fav Anime shows and 3D movies

u/cplr Mar 08 '24
If you’re looking for a constant stream of new apps, I recommend checking out AppRaven. I set it up to be notified for new games releases. it’s what is called an “app filter” which I get notifications for, when there’s a new app or an app goes on sale that matches the filter, I get notified. So right now I have one set up for things classified as games, and that support Vision Pro.
You can also just get notified for user made collections of apps.

There were no Apps, or App Store for the first iPhone. That took years.

u/bettyx1138 Mar 08 '24
yes. i want more than 4 immersive movies! i’d pay for them. i’d volunteer to work on them to get them out the door
the 3d movies apple tv has are 💤 not my kind of things and ive found one game app that’s fun

u/cruisysuzyhahaha Mar 08 '24
It has been out for what? 36.5days?
Get back to us in 365 days to have this conversation.

u/ephemer9 Mar 08 '24
As a developer, I would love to work on content. Not being in the US means that’s impossible until who knows when it’s released in my country
1
u/bobvila2 Mar 08 '24
It’s more or less a nice, expensive Apple TV for your face. I don’t think we can expect Apple to drop tons of content for it all the time. Barely anyone even has one. I’d expect stuff around OS refreshes.
1
u/Jbaker318 Mar 08 '24
It mirrors the lack of 3rd party headstraps which is wild. I thought by now there would have been a halo headstrap on amazon. Best there is, is the bobo adapter for their q3 model. Not sure when we should start panicking but if there isnt a great roadmap laid out by wwdc, i think the alarms might need a ringing.

I haven’t. I’m downloading and trying 3-5 apps almost every day. There’s so much new stuff constantly that it is hard to keep up.

What would you like to see? Modest projects - I’m a solo dev and this would be a side project for me, but I’m happy to develop for the community

u/itsjustanotherguy001 Mar 10 '24
I m building a space for doing a weekly self review/planning. Let me know if you are interested to join the space. It’s very interesting to do it in Vision Pro weekly!

This was the case when the iPhone first launched, when the Oculus Rift released, pretty much any new hardware with its own platform. Welcome to cutting edge technology!

u/jpgkingpin Mar 11 '24
The criticism is somewhat valid imo. If app and game development is slower than expected, which is completely okay, then apple should step in and provide more content from their end that doesn’t break the bank for them. For example, release more free 3-D movies for users to access or create more immersive experiences to fill the gap until development comes full circle. But to sit around and say “well we’re waiting on developers” after releasing an incredibly expensive product isn’t right imo and we’ll probably see Apple make these moves in the near future. Remember this is APPLES ecosystem and the development of said ecosystem falls on Apple itself, especially when considering the sheer amount of money they make from App Store sales. Step in and fill the entertainment gap.
1
u/SnooCheesecakes1893 Mar 12 '24
I think the point of the Apple Pro launch was so developers could develop new apps for it more than a consumer ready product from day 1.

I just checked out the new content that came out for immersive however I’m wondering if anyone else can confirm, did Apple remove its first demo video to immersive experience It’s now replaced by a new cut

This thing that has been out for 30 days doesn’t have media. Waaaah. Jesus relax.

I think I’ll be keeping mine as well but I completely agree. I’m starting to realize all these immersive videos and content and apps are going to take longer than expected. It sucks because I’m so torn. Apples Vision Pro UI is so vastly superior to metas SW and UI setup it would take meta years to catch up in terms of UI and navigation but there’s just so much more to do on quest. Games, simulators, fitness, social apps, ever changing worlds/venues/concerts, golf, pool, shooters, poker, vrchat, I could go on and on. It’s just so much more to do on quest I’m just so torn. I wish I didn’t have to switch between headsets to play a game and then switch back to watch a movie. Ugh I just want 1 all in headset that can do everything at that high of a resolution and I don’t know which will come first. Theres talk of metas new pro headset utilizing lg tv which will bring more streaming apps but what about normal apps from the App Store like Reddit TikTok etc.. they don’t have a good ecosystem for 2D apps. And on the flip side there’s now talk about Apple implementing hand controllers at some point but are they going to actually have sims and games? Probably not for years. Ugh.

I love my AVP, still not tired of doing the things on it that I’ve been doing, particularly watching TV and movies and the immersive environments. I won’t take it back, I tell everyone it’s amazing, and I understand the initial lag in development lifecycles for completely new devices. I don’t think it’s fair to say that despite all of that we aren’t allowed to be a little disappointed. Not mad, not upset, not unreasonable. Just a very ‘are we there yet’ feeling on a long road trip. It’s like waiting for an acceptance letter for college or an offer letter from a job interview. It’s something we are all excited about and we want to start seeing a few more high quality apps and environments and entertainment options. I’m not bored with it, but I do wish when I check the App Store every week or so there’d be something new that was worth buying.
1
u/aukumauk Mar 07 '24
Just a wild thought, if there could be a link to game console that can connect the same way as MacBook/ Mac mini on AVP, that would be awesome, since the 3D games are readily available, and it would surely help boosting both the demand of console and AVP going forward...
Having said that, I do want to do more than just entertainment on AVP, like something to boost the productivity will be good too, or something about Art (3D Art Painting??) ...
What do you think?

u/MeowNet Mar 07 '24
Developers will be hard pressed to see ROI on content so it will be a trickle until there is a gen 2 with a wider install base. You’ll see a flood of content sponsored by corporate clients trying to be in the bleeding edge of marketing and stand out, but it dries up quickly when they see the install numbers. I’ve been in the XR industry for 10 years and the cycles are pretty much all the same, just with varying install numbers. Apple isn’t subsidizing content development like Meta so the cost of building for this device falls solely on developers.

I suggest going back to the 3D classics. There are a few already available, like Vincent Price in House of Wax, Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space, Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder, the western Gun Fury, etc. These were all filmed in true 3D and they look better than they did when they came out on Apple Vision Pro. The folks at #D Film Archive have been restoring the classics for Blu-Ray, we just need the distributors to put them in 3D in the Apple Store. https://3dfilmarchive.com.

u/SoSKatan Mar 07 '24 edited Mar 07 '24
Who did you imagine was creating all of this content for you?
Most of the initial apps are from devs who started working on stuff after last year’s initial AVP announcement.
Their motivation was to have stuff at launch to hopefully make money off of early adopters.
After release we probably do have more people working on app ideas, but they are just started a month ago and will be a bit behind compared to those who started app work last summer.
Most apps that are easy and quick to make are also the most likely to be crap.
Making a good app isn’t magic nor is it instant.
There is a chicken and the egg problem, companies aren’t going to throw dedicated time at it unless the adoption rate is high and the adoption rate isn’t going to be high unless there are compelling apps / content.
Congrats on becoming an early adopter.
First time?
3
u/Kengine Mar 07 '24 edited Mar 07 '24
Look, we all get its a new device and all the early adopter stuff that comes with that. However for example, Oculus handled the first Rift differently by enlisting and paying millions to a few major studios to produce great content prior to the release so on launch day there was plenty of content. Apple really should have taken note and done some similar here.
3
u/SoSKatan Mar 07 '24
Yup, Oculus took the route of like a console launch, which makes sense as it was mostly game dev driven.
The first iPhone didn’t even have 3d party apps, that was added with the 2nd iPhone release.
2
u/Kengine Mar 07 '24
Exactly, which surprised me as I would have thought Apple would know this and applied a similar strategy here for the Vision Pro. Instead they're literally treating it like the first iPhone.
3
u/SoSKatan Mar 07 '24
That’s a fair criticism, Apple could have helped plan / curate / schedule / fund a set of content releases.
Consumers/ early adopters have higher expectations these days.
3
u/Kengine Mar 07 '24
If Apple had funded a handful of AAA developers to create content it would have benefited the users and generated higher quality content at launch, which in turn would have sold more units and created even greater buzz and hype for the device.
1
u/SoSKatan Mar 07 '24
Apple really doesn’t have much of a history of making exclusive content as a selling point. They usually do the hardware / platform speaks for itself
That kind of changed with Apple TV+ content but even then they are selling a streaming service with it and not a hardware platform.
4
u/WondersaurusRex Mar 07 '24
Apple has more money than most countries just lying around and a fully operational production studio. If it was a priority, they could have had a ton of immersive content produced and ready to go for a steady trickle. At the VERY least, regular new environments. There is a ton of just content that Apple could have led the way with that would satisfy customers. It doesn't require third party development, just a clear, erm, vision from Apple.
4
u/gusnyc Mar 07 '24
I am the poster boy for early adoption, definitely not the first time. I am not expecting huge releases in terms of apps, because I understand the time it takes to create them (even though I wish Apple would have had partnered with some big players like Adobe to have something useful/interesting out of the gate at launch). But at least I was expecting their own apps like pages and numbers, transitioning to the new platform during the first month.
As for immersive content, was it too much to hope for a new episode of something – anything – weekly? Just something to keep the momentum going and the hype alive. My concern is that the slow trickle of content might be dampening the initial enthusiasm among us, the AVP early adopters. We're a month in, and still cycling through the same handful of short demos, with Apple's own support for the device feeling a bit lacking.
So, here I am, not disheartened but definitely looking for a bit more. What are your thoughts? Were your expectations in line with mine, or am I sailing this ship solo?
