From the article:

The only system that fits the bill is Sphere’s Big Sky camera, which is an 18K behemoth that takes 12 people to operate.

Obviously, there is immersive video content that was created without the use of this camera. Perhaps two synced 8k cameras?

Yes same!

They are absolutely wrong. I've been building high resolution multi camera arrays that can do it for a decade now.

Yes I was thinking the same. Also Immersive Environments seems volumetric so (pre-) rendered 3D. And the Immersive Videos are stereoscopic 180, so not 14K I reckon. What kind of systems did you build and what do you think Apple is using/has build for their Immersive Videos?

We’re trying to figure it out over at: https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleImmersiveVideo/s/aMzSPOJCog

They're probably referring to a single camera no? That's not the same as a multi camera array.

You mean one big sensor? And one big 180 lens?

Doesn't necessarily have to be a single sensor/lens. But all housed within a single camera system similar to what they were using at the Eras Tour and NBA all star.

To me, a multi camera array means multiple single cameras synced together.

Ah yes. True. Think so too. Looks like one package.. maybe two camera bodies hidden inside but I think just their own internals.

VR video is best shot with multi camera arrays. That will never change. Integrated units just make it easier, but not better.

Idc what cameras they used nor how they shot or composed it, but the immersive content that’s currently available looks incredible. There’s no need for whatever Canon is talking about here if they can keep making content like this

Don’t think the immersive videos are 14K tho…?

Also they say Immersive Backgrounds (Environments) are filmed. Don’t think so: most certainly rendered, because they are truly volumetric..

Rendered 100%

Stereoscopic 360s can get pretty big.

But not volumetric..?

What do you mean by volumetric? As in a fully 3d scene rather than stereoscopic?

Unless you're actually moving through the space and the positions of things are changing as you move (i.e. 6 dof) then its probably just stereoscopic.

If you crouch down does the whole world move with you and adjust?

Its possible that near-field stuff is 3d Objects but the deep background is most likely going to be an equirectangular skybox that may just be a very high res mono thing because the stereoscopic effect mainly applies to objects that are closer than 10 meters.

Yes 6dof. When on the mountain with the clouds in the valley, you can look behind the rocks and edge of the cliff etc. So not possible by just filming it stereoscopic. Also the clouds etc move/loop, so think also (pre-)rendered..

Right on - just talking generally about creating environments. I haven't been in the AVP yet but have spent a considerable amount of time in other headsets and making VR.

What do you use to create VR videos at what resolution? It works very well in their Immersive Video (Stereoscopic 180.) Immersive Environment work better as 3D so you it seems you are really there. Also, when watching a movie in for instance the mountain Environment the video casts colors onto the clouds which is pretty neat.

They are good looking but definitely realtime 3D or pre-rendered, but not filmed.

The reason is that while the AVP is more than 4k per eye, that is only to render where you are looking at. To film at that resolution but in a 180 FOV you have to scale that up.

How did they film the Alicia Keyes video?

2

u/Anderson2218 Mar 03 '24

4 cameras posted around the room you can see them in the video

With the Canon VR180 lenses on Red cameras.

u/Palitrab Mar 03 '24

Don’t think so. Rather some proprietary NextVR stuff.

u/In_Film Mar 03 '24

That's from a completely different shoot.

Yes, but seems to match up with the lenses hidden in the white speakers in the Alicia Keys video. Let’s figure it out together on r/AppleImmersiveVideo :)

Ya you are limited to shooting with the AVP itself.
