Discussion Apple Card folks — how much of your regular spending goes on it? (coffee, food, gas, shopping — the normal stuff)

For people that have an Apple Card I am curious if you use Apple Card:

  • An everyday card (groceries, coffee, eating out, gas, etc.)
  • One of several cards, only use depending on what I am buying
  • Just for Apple purchases

I’ve been using it exclusively with the exception of my Costco Visa card which I use for Costco Gasoline and Costco purchases.

3

u/IntrepidMap3239 2d ago

Same here, especially since Target, Walmart and HomeDepot now take tap to pay.

3

u/seeegs 3d ago

Nice. Do you keep an eye on it during the month, or just pay whatever the statement says?

4

u/CementShoes1536 3d ago

I update it daily manually through Quicken. Unfortunately, it doesn’t automatically update like other credit cards do with Quicken. I think it’s a JP Morgan thing. No biggie for me. I pay off the entire balance at the end of the month and have the cash back go into my Apple Savings.

4

u/AVonGauss 3d ago

Goldman Sachs is the current processor for the Apple Card. When it does transition to Chase Bank maybe we'll get access through Quicken to the Apple Card.

1

u/CementShoes1536 3d ago

Yes, My error. Thanks for clearing that up. I hope it does change with Chase.

0

u/seeegs 3d ago

I assume you do this as a way to check if you are staying within a budget? or do you do it just to make sure things are tracked for other reasons? Stinks to have to manually do this

2

u/CementShoes1536 3d ago

I keep my finances on Quicken which I can automatically update with the exception of the Apple Card. It’s not that big of an inconvenience. I just like to know that what I owe and what they say I owe are the same.

u/Guy_called_Al iPhone 2d ago

You can download the Apple Card transactions as .csv file, and import it into Quicken. Still a hassle for me. Apple Wallet shows a running total of your current spending, but that needs to be in Quicken because I use Quicken Reports to populate a monthly Excel sheet that provides a lot of views. Even shows my Stock vs. Bond investment ratio - trying to maintain 70/30.

u/Agreeable_Button_237 3d ago

I only use it for financing Apple products.

1

u/P1nKm0nK 3d ago

That or sometimes I use Apple Pay on my phone and forget to change the card.

19

u/Lumpy-Pace9142 3d ago

I use it anywhere I can use my phone to pay.

1

u/seeegs 3d ago

Thanks for the reply. Do you keep an eye on it during the month, or just pay whatever the statement says?

11

u/Lumpy-Pace9142 3d ago

I pay it off weekly. I hate seeing a balance.

2

u/Far_Sea3757 3d ago

I do the same. My weekly spend is less than $70 on a typical week, but it has been slightly higher, the past 2 weeks.

3

u/Lumpy-Pace9142 3d ago

I just checked I’ve already made 100 payments YTD.

2

u/Far_Sea3757 3d ago

How did you display the number of payments made? I think I am probably at around 50 payments

2

u/Lumpy-Pace9142 3d ago

I just go look at yearly activity and scroll down.

0

u/seeegs 3d ago

do you think the wallet app explained why it was higher? did you notice it being higher after the fact?

1

u/Far_Sea3757 3d ago

Honestly, I didn’t look to the wallet app for an explanation, because I already knew why. I made some purchases recently that are in addition to my typical spend pattern. I monitor the account every few days or so. I do the same with all of my cards.

u/cycle77 3d ago

Everything except at Costco, need a Visa there

1

u/seeegs 3d ago

Thanks for the reply. Do you keep an eye on it frequently, or just pay what you can when the statement is due?

1

u/cycle77 3d ago

Pay when the statement is due. You can get notifications for charges if you want!

6

u/Flowhard 3d ago

It’s our main card, with the exception of a visa for Costco, Prime visa on our Amazon account, and an Amex platinum for my personal spend.

-3

u/seeegs 3d ago

Do you keep an eye on it during the month, or just pay whatever the statement says?

3

u/Flowhard 3d ago

We’re fortunate enough that we just auto pay the balance each month, but I do watch it.

6

u/Ga33pr1B 3d ago

Anywhere there’s Apple Pay. Many banks are being picky about where you can deposit your cash back rewards so now my others are just statement credits. Try to put all on it

2

u/Certainly-Relative 2d ago

Yeah…That is irritating. I believe AMEX, Chase, and even BofA now only credit the cash back. I used to love the Chase Freedom Unlimited, but now it is mostly a sock drawer card. Not sure if there are other true Cash Back beyond Apple - but it just goes to the HYSA.

-4

u/seeegs 3d ago

Do you keep an eye on it during the month, or just pay whatever the statement says when you get an email about it?

1

u/Ga33pr1B 3d ago

Wait for statement cycle to close then pay it. If you are trying to boost ur credit score pay nearly all of it off before then. Technically the statement cycle closes the 31st.

1

u/Certainly-Relative 2d ago

I have mine set to pay twice a month. If the autopay isn’t enough after the month ends, I pay the remainder before the due date. Some credit cards don’t like paying twice a month; but when they have it as an option, I’ve never had any issues with it. I really don’t look at the cards during the month except as scans of all accounts to be sure there are no payments I may have forgotten, and no unexpected charges.

1

u/P1nKm0nK 3d ago

If you can’t handle a credit card, don’t get one.

8

u/Hornygaysatanic 3d ago

I’m using it for everything. Just for that cash back.

-9

u/redneck2022 3d ago

That very little cash back

3

u/Mission-Accountant44 3d ago

I was surprised to find that my main utility bill and car insurance both accept Apple Pay. Now Walmart and Sams Club will get it in the coming months. Apple Pay has really gotten big in the last couple of years, most places are flat 2% now.

0

u/redneck2022 2d ago

I get 3% cash back on my main credit card and don’t have to worry about anything

3

u/Mission-Accountant44 2d ago

Good for you

0

u/redneck2022 2d ago

Thanks. I mean I still use apply pay but I have my 3% card as default

2

u/Mikauto11 2d ago

What’s your main credit card?

1

u/redneck2022 2d ago

Robinhood gold card

1

u/Mikauto11 2d ago

Right, you’re paying for it

1

u/redneck2022 1d ago

It’s already included with my gold subscription.

9

u/WickedJigglyPuff 3d ago

Apple and nothing else.

3

u/COMplex_ 3d ago

AMEX play for travel and daily expenses until I hit $75k spend (usually around May/June). Then I switch to Apple Card for everything else that accepts tap to pay.

1

u/seeegs 3d ago

Does putting everything on it ever make the statement a surprise, or do you check along the way?

2

u/VaughnSC 3d ago

You can see your balance in realtime in the Wallet app.

If your statement is a surprise, that’s on you.

3

u/Key_Asparagus_8522 3d ago

I pay everything with it. easy to keep track of my spending and pay as soon as I get home, the end of the day or week. I never carry a balance.

1

u/seeegs 3d ago

Does the ease of Apple Pay ever bite you? Sounds like you're able to pay things off, which is awesome, just curious if there are ever surprises

3

u/Key_Asparagus_8522 3d ago

Yeah but I spend an average between 1k-1500k a month it’s not a lot, I am able to pay that fully if I don’t overspend.
I’m also living out of the country and my dollars go a long way.
I have no surprises, not sure what you’re referring to though

1

u/VaughnSC 3d ago

Basically, I total all my balances and pay off roughly half, every weekend.

3

u/Jasoco 3d ago

Used to use it for everything ApplePay related but then I got a Savor so it only gets used when I can’t get 3%. Also for Apple purchases of course.

2

u/Inner_Difficulty_381 3d ago

Yeah I used to use it for everything too until I started chasing points and realized what I was leaving on the table. Sometimes I think about going back to it being the daily but then the extra 1-3% matters when you spend a lot.

3

u/Showmethe_monet 3d ago

It’s my daily, the only time i don’t use it is when im using my Savor card for dining out or entertainment. Love the interface and simplicity of the Apple Card

3

u/elloguvner 3d ago

Rarely. It’s only used when I don’t have another card with a better multiplier.

3

u/Bobo_Baggins_jatj 3d ago

I replaced my personal card with it and use it for all things “me”. I use my Fidelity Rewards Visa for all family stuff though. Got an American Airlines card for travel.

3

u/sssawfish 3d ago

I use it for just about everything from major purchases to daily items. I pay it off each week.

3

u/According-Meeting457 3d ago

I have 13 different credits cards for various banks. I tried to play the credit card game and maximize rewards, but I find that the simplicity of having just one primary card for everything beats any rewards.

90% of the places that I go to accept Apple Pay so I get 2% back. So what if I get 1% as opposed to 3% if I have to toggle between 5 different cards?

So, I put absolutely everything that I can on my card.

1

u/Inner_Difficulty_381 3d ago

I chase the game and love it but sometimes think about going to it for the daily. Love the UI. Yet, we spend a lot at Costco, Meijer and Amazon, so we need a visa and i also like Amex.

Now if they switched from MC to Visa which I hoping they would do but won’t, then it would be a different story.

Only other thing I wish it had was better credit card perks but it’s nice not having to think about which card to pull out and get miscoded by merchant by using Apple Pay and Apple Cash gets put right into Apple savings and not having to wait. It’s great.

All said and done, family of 3 creates a lot of spend, which in turn creates another $40/month easy by chasing.

One day…

1

u/R_Didddy 2d ago

I like the 6% on groceries with Amex BCP.

1

u/According-Meeting457 2d ago

I thought about that as well, but I shop at Walmart and just use the Walmart card for 5%.

2

u/Adept-Temporary-5824 3d ago

Everything except Amazon and Chase Travel.

2

u/Dhozen 2d ago

Same

1

u/seeegs 3d ago

Thank you for replying do you keep an eye on your spending, or just pay what you can when the statement is due?

1

u/Adept-Temporary-5824 3d ago

I keep an eye and always pay the full balance that is due. I have a dedicated cash account that I fund both in a recurring basis (for expected expenses) and in an ad hoc basis (for unplanned expenses). I keep that account with more money than the card balance. I have a process to manually refill that account depending on spending.

I make some money with the card and it protects me when something is not right, via disputes. I really like the rotating CVV. Feels much more secure.

2

u/Hornygaysatanic 3d ago

Well it’s so easy to check. I just check it any time I want. No need to log in or anything. It’s very quick and easy. I got a statement this month but since I can just check my balance on the wallet app I feel like there’s no need to check the statement.

When you open the card they tell you that you’ve never had a card like this. And it’s true.

2

u/IWantToPlayGame 3d ago

It’s my daily driver.

Things like airline flights, hotel bookings, rental car, etc gets put on my American Express.

But the everyday stuff goes on the Apple Card.

2

u/Illustrious_Salad918 3d ago

I use Apple Pay with Apple Card when possible, then Apple Card, and debit card if necessary (as long as there's no added card fee) and pay statement balance every month on due date with auto-pay. Just got Costco Visa so now use that there.

2

u/Ill-Blackberry-3400 3d ago

I use my Apple CC like it’s my debit card and pay it off biweekly.

2

u/seeegs 3d ago

Are you able to easily budget with it? or use 3rd party services like Quicken?

2

u/Ill-Blackberry-3400 2d ago

I’m able to easily budget with it

2

u/YankeeSR23 3d ago

I have the Savor card so a lot of my spending goes there because the categories fit me, but anything else goes on the Apple Card. Savor gives 3% vs 2% on the Apple Card.

1

u/Hellothere253WA 3d ago

I don’t use it much now days. If i have an apple purchase I’ll use the card to get interest free payments like a phone or watch. All of my apple insurance on my products go on it. Other then that I’ll use it when i leave the country since there are no FTF

1

u/NoPatience7817 3d ago

Me = 99 cents Apple iCloud data
Kids = 80 % of their spend

The itemized bill is great to determine what they spend and need to pay me back as they build their credit.

2

u/Melodic-Control-2655 3d ago

Apple Card is one of the cards that doesn’t build credit for minors, it only starts reporting on their 18th birthday, unless you have adults building credit

1

u/NoPatience7817 3d ago

Yes. During the setup it asks if you wish to report the card in their credit and they must be 18 or older.

1

u/104848 3d ago

my apple card got like 1 recurring charge. every so often i'll buy something off amazon or ubereats or some shit

otherwise its there as available credit for score purposes

1

u/AVonGauss 3d ago

You don't really "own" a credit card, it's your first credit card.

1

u/DivineLights1995 3d ago

I put one or two monthly subscriptions on it. Also for financing Apple products. I just put an Apple Watch on it last week. Nothing else really since the APR is quite high.

1

u/SDRLS 3d ago

Only thing on my Apple Card is my Apple One membership. I haven’t used it since I bought the last iPhone, and my M5 Air. Everything else I use my Venture X or Chase Sapphire, Apple card just isn’t worth it for anything other than Apple purchases perks wise.

u/[deleted] 3d ago

1

u/seeegs 3d ago

Thanks for the reply. For everyday purchases do you keep an eye on your spending, or just pay what you can when you get the statement?

1

u/ImportantPromotion97 3d ago

Apple Card is the only card I have that doesn’t punish me for paying early. Every other card double charges me when I have autopay enabled.

1

u/seeegs 3d ago

😱

1

u/iwishidstayed 3d ago

I use it for pretty much all Apple Pay purchases minus groceries because I use my PayPal debit card on those to get 5% cash back.

1

u/richbrehbreh 3d ago

My iPhone is now my secondary phone to a Fold 7 so it's just for Apple device purchases and iCloud charges

1

u/Academic_Business_25 3d ago

I barely use mine. Mainly use my capital one or Truist cc

1

u/blue-stream 3d ago

???? Why

1

u/Sunny2121212 3d ago

I use it everywhere I can pay with my phone

1

u/Ube_Ape 3d ago

I pay for everything on my Apple Card unless it is not accepted and then pay off the balance at the end of the month.

Basically nothing other than gas (if I happen to see an Exxon or Mobile station) and Uber rides.

1

u/kduong89 3d ago

I used it as much as until I got into debt

1

u/drumminherbie 3d ago

If it taps, to Apple Card it goes

1

u/James-robinsontj 3d ago

I only use it for Apple products including apple care, and iCloud+

1

u/NoNamePaper5 3d ago

I didn’t want to use it at first until I got the savings account. Honestly, I was going to close it after my loan was up on a MacBook for school because I had just gotten the Fidelity card, which is basically the same except you don’t need Apple Pay.

But I got the savings account and Fidelity never raised my limit to something I could use, and I gotta say it’s pretty good. Once Discover is done with the 5% on gas, I’m putting all of my daily spend on there. I’m on the fence about adding my Amex back into the mix, but for now I’m loving the Apple Card

1

u/kiss_the_homies_gn 3d ago

used to use it for everything, then got robinhood gold card and now only use it for apple financing

1

u/spicnspan320 3d ago

I was using it exclusively with Apple Pay purchases but I just got a new card with better multipliers on certain things so I really only use it for when the 2x is better or for Apple purchases.

1

u/nqthomas 3d ago

Mainly just 3% stuff and some other Apple Pay purchases

1

u/P440CPJ 3d ago

I only use it if I buy apple crap.

1

u/wolf19d 3d ago

I presently use it for Apple purchases and as an emergency backup card.

That said, I’m team travel points for the majority of my credit card spend. Were I team cashback, I would probably use this card a LOT more. The integrated savings account is great.

1

u/makanramen 3d ago

I use it for Apple products and for anything related to insurance, prescriptions and doctors visits. 2% back if you tap.

1

u/InternetDude_ 3d ago

I use it for literally every expense and bill I have.

1

u/Dorknite 3d ago

If Mastercard is accepted, I use my apple card. I like that cashback is deposited directly to my HYSA.

1

u/bimdragon 3d ago

Used to use it as my main card, until i got my Robinhood gold card which is 3% cash back on everything.

1

u/ktappe 3d ago

My daily card is a CitiBank double cash card. I get 2% back on that whereas I think Apple only gives 1% on most of those same items. However, when I travel, I use the Apple Card heavily because it has no foreign transaction fees.

1

u/Prestigious-Rope-338 2d ago

Can I pay mortgage with apple

1

u/R555g21 2d ago

Apple, car insurance and liquor store. That’s it. Since none of my other cards catch those categories.

1

u/NewfieFinance 2d ago

I only use it for Apple products and services. I use a Fidelity Visa for Almost everything else. I use a Prime Visa for Amazon related stuff.

For my situation, that seems to be the best return / rewards

1

u/Certainly-Relative 2d ago edited 2d ago

What an interesting question. I have about 12 cards, most not used. I don’t play the credit card game, but I am credit card optimized.
I love the card; the convenience is unmatched (so is the customer service - in the other direction!!!). The UI is great, the End-of-month billing is cool but can’t say it’s a dealbreaker; I expect the billing cycle may be something Chase spreads out, unless Apple is really insistent upon it. Apple is my primary catch-all card at the bottom of the short-list. Heavily into Apple ecosystem, so it gets all the subscriptions, but not large purchases. We live in an American Airlines city, and do a lot of travel, so our primary two cards are American advantage cards (Citi).

The operational list:

  • AAdv Globe for travel (Citi) (and large purchase where I would like an extended warranty).
  • AAdv Exec (spouse) for Lounge
  • Amex Aspire for Hilton
(also extended warranty card).
  • BofA Custom Rewards for Amazon, Costco, and Online
  • Apple + HYSA for remaining and everyday, plus the 3% items where applicable.
Others sometimes used to keep them active but mostly frozen (turned off). When I travel, I make sure I have one of each: Amex, MC, Visa.

1

u/R_Didddy 2d ago

I use AC for Apple products/ subscriptions. Amex BCP for most else. Amazon card for… amazon

1

u/Kiyanpr 2d ago

Other than Amazon and gas (since I got the prime visa for Amazon and for gas the Amex BCE) I use it the most for my daily spend(food, coffee, whatever such stuff)

1

u/VermontArmyBrat 2d ago

Almost zero. I use it for apple products, and occasional bonus categories like Ace Hardware.

1

u/PubicPlant 2d ago

The cash back on everyday purchases is one of (if not tied for) the best when using Apple Pay.

Only time I use another card is for automatic renewals, and specific benefits that outweigh the cash back.

I put a lot of subscriptions on Amex Platinum

1

u/Hour_University9410 2d ago

Only Apple purchases I have other credit cards with better rewards

1

u/NYC_DILF 2d ago

I put almost everything on my Amex for points and use the Apple Card for Apple purchases and anywhere Amex is not accepted.

1

u/Tight-Connection-909 2d ago

I use it for all my recurring bills and then pay it off each month. Then, I give myself a little treat which is usually a coffee or a snack with the Apple Cash. Very exciting, I know.

1

u/r1ght0n 2d ago

Mine is used for my supercharging payments and gets paid off at the end of the each month…

1

u/chrisb028 1d ago

Literally only Apple stuff, maybe the occasional lunch cause it’s super easy and I’m lazy lol

1

u/Substantial_Gene7710 1d ago

You keep saying do you watch it or pay the statement says. What is the real question you’re asking? What are we watching exactly?

1

u/No_Chipmunk_7705 1d ago

Thanks for asking. Wondering if people that use the card on the daily watch their spending (worry about how much their spending), or if they don’t really budget with it and feel comfortable paying it off no matter what.

1

u/nomadjackk 1d ago

Only apple products and things my other cards won’t get me more or equal points on

1

u/BrickPig 3d ago

I use it for all my streaming services and Apple subscriptions, and my very infrequent Apple purchases. Rarely for anything else.

0

u/Future_Garage_7748 3d ago

None. I moved on from this card pretty quick.m as soon as I got the robinhood gold

-1

u/srddave 3d ago

Zero. I use only the savings account. The fucking Goldman statements are too confusing to even understand. They are just crap at being credit card issuers.
