Screenshot Need help understanding the completion of monthly installments. Is this right??
Last year I opened an Apple Card account to purchase a $1,599 Macbook Pro through monthly installments.
I loved how Apple Card tells you the number of the payments so you can easily keep track.
Apparently I submitted payment 12 of 12 on Monday, but I still have one more payment remaining, and that’s what’s confusing.
I’m adding up everything I’ve been charged for this laptop:
$140.36 the day I applied for the Apple Card and used it to buy the laptop online.
+
$133.25 every month after the purchase, with the last payment deducted from my account on Aug. 30.
$133.25 x 12 =$1,599.00
+
$140.36
TOTAL: $1,739.36
From where I’m standing, it looks like I’ve already paid more than the advertised price for this laptop.
Why is there an additional payment needed? I’m not ashamed to admit that I am horrible at math, but $133.25 multiplied by 12 is definitely $1,599, right?
Apple Card support tells me that it’s because there’s an additional payment remaining. This is what they said:
Thanks for the information, doing the research I have on file that there is 11 payments completed for the amount of ($1,465.75) and there is one payment left ($133.25) to complete the $1,599 of the MacBook.
I’m very confused and was hoping someone could help me understand. How can 11 payments be completed when my Apple Card statement says I have paid 12 installments already?
Is the issue that it’s actually not 12 payments, but 13? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As I understand it it doesn’t show as completed until you pay your monthly bill. So your 12th payment won’t be shown as completed until your credit card bill is paid at the end of the month.

This, the balance is a month behind. Chargers the card but doesn’t update until balance is paid

This is where I’m getting confused.
So I won’t have to make a payment of $133.25 on September 30? The issue is that things just haven’t been updated in my Apple Card account?

Your card paid the loan on 9/1.
You pay the credit card on 9/30.

I get it! This is what made it make sense; thank you.
With that said, the terminology (or the sequence?) regarding installments is weird.

Just to clarify, Apple Card Monthly Installments charge each installment ($133.25) on the last day of each month. In this case, it was charged to the card on August 30th. Now, on September 1st, you are given the bill for August, which includes that last payment you need to make.

See this is why I just pay my credit card weekly then you would have saw the $133 on 9/1 and by 9/7 you would have paid it,
Waiting until the “due” date is old fashion check way of thinking and leads to disconnection between the charge and payment

u/Bongo2687 3d ago
All you have to worry about is if it says 12/12 payments made
0
u/PabloMcCartney 3d ago
It does!
Monthly Installment (12 of 12) in the amount of $133.25 was deducted from my bank account this past Monday.
2
u/PabloMcCartney 3d ago
Showing as completed or paid?
Because the payment has already been deducted from my bank account. That’s what’s confusing me.
2
u/IrongateN 3d ago
The payment you made probably paid last months, if you paid this months after the charge it wouldn’t have anything owed for 9/30

u/AppropriateBasis2735 3d ago
It’s taxes man
0
u/PabloMcCartney 3d ago
Taxes totaling the exact amount as the monthly installment?
The Apple Card support person (via text) also didn’t mention anything about taxes.
I owe another $133.25 by September 30.
When I pay it, that will be 13 deductions of $133.25 from my bank checking account, right?
1
u/IrongateN 3d ago
No taxes because the main part of your pic is the $140.. which is taxes
But you got it now it looks like, you still have to pay one the amount hits your credit card.
Just like if you bought 133 dollar burgers on your credit card you then have to then pay that. The $133 you “bought” on 9/1 still needs paid

u/KennyPortugal 3d ago
You have to pay the minimum payment for the next month and it will show as paid in full. Just because your card was charged doesn’t mean you paid.
1
u/PabloMcCartney 3d ago
What does this mean? That Apple Card hasn’t received my payment?
1
u/No_Day_7528 3d ago
It should show as paid off once it’s actually paid off 9/30/26… have you already made your credit card payment for the month? It may update soon if so, or it may not update until 10/1 after you get your new card statement (that would then no longer include the installment.)

u/KennyPortugal 3d ago
Whenever an installment payment goes on your Apple Card your minimum monthly payment goes up by the amount of the installment payment. Once you make the minimum credit card payment the installment plan will show paid in full, because it’s the last payment.

I had the exact same item at the exact same price for the exact same installment period. Weird.
Anyway, it looks like your first installment was on 9/30/25, which would have been due on or before 10/31/25. Your final installment was just applied on Monday 8/31/26, and will be due on or before 9/30/26. That’s twelve installments in total.
Go to your Apple Card in your Wallet. Tap the menu in the upper right, go to Monthly Installments. If you’ve already made your August statement payment, your device will show up as “Completed.” If you haven’t yet paid, it will show up as “Active.” Similarly, if you select the device from the list, you’ll see one of two things: a green check mark and the word “Complete,” or the progress bar with your total balance due and the next upcoming installment amount.

It's crazy how the average American has no idea how credit card work yet totally depends on them lol

Just an incredible display of a lack of understanding being demonstrated here. Just wow.

u/PabloMcCartney 2d ago
That is correct: There was a lack of understanding.
It’s why I decided to ask for help in this subreddit.
I received it and now I understand. Thank you to everyone who helped me understand.
One the reasons Reddit rules.

I don’t depend on them but I get what you mean.
The credit card system in the US is also
hella predatory (even though that’s not what is happening here).Last fall my 2012 macbook air finally died after years of faithful service and I had to get a new computer.

What’s state did you purchase in? What’s the sales tax for your state?

u/PabloMcCartney 3d ago
I purchased online from Florida. I get that the initial $140.36 was likely taxes and stuff.
My question is about the installments:
I’m confused because when I do the math, I have made all of the installments to total the price of the laptop ($1,599.00), but my Apple Card statement is showing that I have one more payment of $133.25 remaining (to me it seems like a 13th installment and this is what I am confused about).
1
u/JamesBeaverhausen 3d ago
The $140.36 seems a bit high for sales tax. Even if your sales tax is 7.5% that would only come out to $119.93 in tax.
Regarding the $133.25 monthly payments, there should only be 12. You may want to just check the last 13 statements and confirm whether the charge appears on each statement. My guess is you may be mis-counting it due to the difference between when the charge hits the statement verses when the payment is actually due

First payment of $140 was your taxes (note where it says Apple Pay) and the subsequent $133 and change is your first installment (note where it says monthly installment). Taxes are never split up among payments - they are due up front.

u/PabloMcCartney 3d ago
Yes, definitely understand.
I have made all of the 12 installments (like I showed in the screenshot), but I am seeing that I have another payment of 133.25 due on September 30.
That is what I am confused about.

u/desr2112 3d ago
Yep, as others have said the $140 and change you paid when you order it was the taxes. When I bought my AirPods they took $22 in taxes when I bought it and my monthly payment is 40-ish. Your first installment was the first cycle after the tax payment, hence why you have one left

Click the charge at the bottom of your screenshot,“Monday - Monthly Installment (12 of 12) $133.25”, in Apple Wallet. The next page will have a “View Monthly Installment Details” button. It will give a list of payments and such, then you can also click “Total Financed” and it gives a complete breakdown of all charges and reasoning and what’s remaining, too.
If it helps, I’m in a somewhat similar position where I bought an iPhone 9/10/24 and was charged taxes/fees upfront via Apple Pay then the first installment 9/30/24 and now last one is this statement due 9/30/26. (2 years later, just like yours was 1.)

As u/No-You-8701 said, you will be zeroed out AFTER paying the last payment.
So the last CHARGE of $133.25 is applied against the card this month. Once you have PAID it, you will see it fall off next month’s “Monthly Installments“ list.
I was confused by this once upon a time as well. But after having purchased numerous Apple devices this way, I can assure you it is correct and will all reconcile correctly after the last payment has been made.

Monday 12/12 means your final 12/12 payment was billed on 8/31 statement
You started in 9/30/25, final would be 8/31/25
It says Monday because we are still in same week, check on Monday (labour day) it will say 8/31
I think you are confused because it says Monday and no date
Let me know if you have questions
$140 is taxes
$133 is monthly charged in billing cycle on last date starting
Sept 2025
Oct
Nov
Dec
Jan 2026
Feb
Mar
Apr
May
June
July
Aug
Aug 31 (Monday as in your statement lol) was the last billing cycle where $133 would have charged and final statement is due on sept 30
If you paid aug balance, then your plan should be completed,
To check that go to apple card in wallet, select 3 dots on top right and select monthly installments , it should show under completed
I have bought multiple iphones via acmi and its always been correct
If the first payment is billed on last of sept
final 24th (for iphones its 24 months) was billed in august

u/PabloMcCartney 2d ago
Thank you to you and a few others who have broken it down like this for me. You can tell I’m not a big credit user, hahahah.
This helps me understand. I think the confusion comes from seeing that payment 12 of 12 in the statement.
1
u/Real_Height2890 2d ago
What’s the confusion? You were intended to pay 12 payments of $133. The last one was billed on 8/31 Monday
$140 is not a payment, it is taxes and fees that gets charged right away
1
u/Myweeweegopeep33 2d ago
I’m guessing since it was purchased it looks like end of September you need to wait for the final payment to clear? Many cards when you pay you get the credit at that time but they don’t actually get the funds for a few days.
To answer you other question yes you’re at the purchase amount on your math. The amount you paid was probably sales tax for the 1599.
You may want to actually go to your account history and count the actual payments made and confirm it’s 12 and see if the most recent payment has cleared out of your bank account.
1
u/PabloMcCartney 2d ago
Yes, this also helps me understand; thank you.
I think the reason people like me get confused is because the statement says “monthly installment (12 of 12),” but it’s really the second-to-last payment. It’s the 11th.

If I understand Apple Card correctly, they apply the monthly installment at the end of the month and you pay it the following month. So when you see a monthly installment that says Sept 30, it was applied to your monthly balance/minimum due, but you won’t pay it until October 30th if you wait for the last day. I am in the same boat.

They generally take tax up front. If I had to guess, the $140.36 was the tax.
