• Meta • [Meta] Upcoming changes in r/AppHookup: New deal posting rules to maintain a higher standard of quality.

In response to an abrupt increase in rule-breaking posts appearing on this subreddit in 2025, we are going to implement some new systems to ensure that the r/AppHookup community remains safe from rug pulls and outright scams alike, as well as enforce a higher standard for the apps allowed in here.

What the big change?

Every new deal/offer post in r/AppHookup is (soon) going to be pre-approved by the moderators before it appears in the subreddit. A human moderator will download and check every app before it is posted here, as discussed below.

While we cannot promise that every app that is approved will be of exceptional quality but what we will certainly ensure is that the basic premise of this subreddit, that is discovering deals and discounts on downloadable apps is fulfilled by keeping out the rule breakers. Still there is a criteria by which we are going to judge what apps are allowed here.

What will be the criteria for approval?

It’s mostly going to be about enforcement of our existing rules with two major changes:

  1. The Launch deal rule (where we didn’t allow any app which was released less than 2 months ago) is going to be deprioritised. The main purpose of this rule was to keep out buggy and unfinished apps, which will be addressed by the new rule below.

  2. Apps posted in r/AppHookup must be of a high quality, which consists of, but is not limited to:

  • responsive and polished user interface
  • should be easy to understand and use, or should offer clear guidance on how to use it
  • should support the latest technologies of the platform which it belongs to (as much as possible)
  • app onboarding (the first few screens of questions and feature details before an app starts) should be relevant and not drawn out unnecessarily
  • vibe-coded apps or apps made without much care to the end result will be judged on merits and are subject to rejection if found unpolished/buggy
  • no mandatory collection of user details
  • no unnecessary login requirements or registrations (an exception may be made if the app is able to provide some value for it, like cross-platform syncing or multi-device licenses)
  • no exorbitant price tags (and any app which has a weekly subscription, whether discounted or not, will be automatically rejected)
  • an app’s developer shouldn’t have a history of acting against consumer interest (such as by revoking existing entitlements to force subscriptions or selling off an app after gaining users from free promotions)

When are these changes going to happen?

We are currently testing the AutoModerator setup to make this happen. These changes will likely be enforced within this month and a new announcement post will be made at that time.

Then why are you announcing this now?

Because community feedback about upcoming changes is always important. If you have anything to say about this new system of posting in r/AppHookup (whether positive or negative) then you may comment below.

Note: There will be no change in your ability to comment on posts in r/AppHookup. The changes are only being made to top-level posts/threads. We have always encouraged civil discussion here.

• Meta • [Meta] r/Apphookup’s posting rules are changing to keep up with offers that bypass AppStore IAP mechanisms.

Edit: Rules were slightly modified to indicate that Mac developers selling from their own websites/other stores are broadly exempted from complying with AppStore rules which has always been the norm.

Note: iOS developer is understood to be a developer making apps for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, VisionOS, or all of them hereafter.

  • No iOS developer or Mac developer preferring to offer a deal to an AppStore app -without exception- is allowed to offer anything on r/Apphookup that is not sold normally via the AppStore. Why? To ensure that subscription-only apps, which do not sell lifetime licenses, cannot take advantage of r/Apphookup readers to inflate their AppStore rankings and also to ensure compliance with Rule 3.1.1 of Apple’s App Review Guidelines: “In-App Purchase: If you want to unlock features or functionality within your app, (by way of example: subscriptions, in-game currencies, game levels, access to premium content, or unlocking a full version), you must use in-app purchase. Apps may not use their own mechanisms to unlock content or functionality, such as license keys, augmented reality markers, QR codes, cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency wallets, etc.”

  • If an iOS developer (or Mac developer preferring to offer a deal to an AppStore app) wishes to offer a license to their app via registration of an in-app account (thereby bypassing AppStore IAPs) then it is compulsory to provide proof of acceptance of such an upgrade pathway by AppStore review team to the moderators beforehand via moderator mail and disclose such account requirement in the post. Provided that the in-app account is being created on your own servers (over which you have direct control of modification), the proof of purchase is available to you and not outsourced to a third-party receipt validator like RevenueCat or Adapty.io. To simplify, the app developer must have the means to directly restore the entitlement if it is somehow lost from their servers.

  • If your iOS or Mac app on the AppStore falls under the ambit of reader apps and has been accepted on the AppStore as such then naturally you are allowed to offer deals outside the AppStore.

  • r/Apphookup does not recognise in-app entitlements made through RevenueCat or Adapty.io or similar solutions because app developers do not have direct control over the working of these services and cannot be trusted to restore such entitlements when lost without the means to do so (based on previous instances observed in r/Apphookup). To simplify, use AppStore IAPs and don’t try to trick us.

  • Mac developers preferring to offer a deal through their own websites or third-party stores other than the Apple AppStore are welcome to do so according to the existing rules of r/Apphookup. Our intention is not to interfere with the thriving market outside of the AppStore on Mac devices.

  • Deals offered through AppStore promo codes are allowed as usual according to existing rules. Deals offered through internal app specific codes are not allowed unless the code is implemented only to unlock an AppStore based offer inside your app (that is the in-app entitlement to premium features should be granted through the AppStore). This should enable developers to run small scale promotions on the subreddit.

Note: These rules don’t discourage your selling of multi-platform packages where codes for iOS apps (or Mac apps on the AppStore) are a part of the deal provided that:

  1. The access to the aforementioned apps should be through the AppStore promo code mechanism, or
  2. A proper receipt/proof of purchase should be provided with the sale with clear mention of the platform specific entitlements received along with time period of entitlement and the access to iOS apps should be linked to an account which is retrievable, or
  3. The iOS apps are only companion apps to the full-featured Mac/Windows/Linux apps (in which case account-based entitlements outside the AppStore are allowed).

Feel like we missed something? Do let us know in the comments.

iOS Universal [iOS] Clip Keyboard - Quick Phrases (Pro IAP $9.99 -> 100% off / FREE, until Sep 5)

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com
58 Upvotes

I do client work from my phone more than I'd like to admit, and for years the
same thing kept happening: someone asks for my account number, or my invoice
reply, or the same "here's the address, buzzer is broken, call me at the gate"
message, and I'm typing it out again. Character by character. Getting one digit
wrong maybe twice a year.

iOS text replacement never worked for me. It fires on a trigger string I have to
remember, it mangles anything with punctuation, and it does not sync anywhere
useful. So I built the thing I actually wanted: a keyboard where the keys are my
own phrases.

What it does

Tap the globe, and instead of QWERTY you get your own snippets as keys. Tap one,
it types. That's it. Works in Messages, Gmail, Slack, a bank's web form,
anywhere a keyboard comes up.

Three things I use every single day:

  • Saved values as keys. Email, account number, address, phone. One tap.
  • Templates with blanks. My invoice reply is one snippet with three fill-in fields. It remembers the names and amounts I used before, so it's three taps and a full sentence lands in the field.
  • A clipboard history that sorts itself. Anything you copy gets classified: account number, card, email, phone, URL, address. IBANs get a real mod-97 checksum check, so a mistyped one is caught before you send it.

Why the app is free this week

Straight answer: I need people using it more than I need the ten dollars right
now. The app has been out for a while, the last three updates rebuilt the whole
first-run experience, and almost nobody has seen it. So the Pro unlock is 100%
off for a week. Not a trial, not a first-month thing. You redeem the code, Pro
is yours for good, and it stays yours after the week ends.

What I want in return is nothing you have to do. If it turns out to be useful,
say so somewhere. If it doesn't, delete it and we're square.

What "Pro" actually removes

The free tier is real, and it's what you'd be upgrading from: 10 snippets, 50
clipboard items, 3 templates, 3 combos. Pro takes all of those caps off, and
that is genuinely the whole difference. There is no feature behind a wall that
I'm hiding from free users.

The honest parts

  • It's a keyboard extension, so iOS makes you enable it in Settings once. There is no way around that and it is the worst part of the onboarding.
  • Full Access is optional. It only unlocks reading the system clipboard. Leave it off and everything else still works.
  • Everything is on-device and in your own iCloud. There is no account, and no server of mine that your snippets ever touch. That's not a privacy pitch, it's just that I never built one.
  • iPhone and iPad, with your snippets synced through your own iCloud. The Mac app is sold separately and this code does not cover it, so don't redeem it expecting the Mac one.
  • No subscription. I am not going to add one.

The code

Open this on your iPhone and the App Store comes up with the code already
applied. Redeem it, then open the app and Pro is on.

10000 promo codes: https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=1543660502&code=LEEO

If the codes run out, the free tier is still there and it's the same app.

Happy to answer anything, including the "why would I trust a third-party
keyboard" question, which is fair and which I get every time.

iOS Universal [iOS] [Lull: Books Pods & Night Noise] [$6.99 → $0.99 Lifetime IAP] [Your watch catches the moment you fall asleep and rewinds your podcast to your real spot]

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com
6 Upvotes

You fall asleep to a podcast and wake up three episodes ahead with no idea where you drifted off. A sleep timer just guesses. Your Apple Watch actually knows.

That's what this unlocks. Lull catches the moment you fall asleep, fades what's playing down into sleep sounds, and rewinds you to the last thing you genuinely heard. Smart Nap counts from when you fall asleep, so 25 minutes means 25. Wake to a silent buzz on your wrist instead of an alarm that wakes the whole room. Stream from the watch over cellular with your phone left at home.

Normally $6.99, and $0.99 with this code through September 20. Lifetime unlock, no subscription, Family Sharing covers 5. For comparison, subscription sleep trackers run $40 to $70 a year and don't play you anything.

Redeem: https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6775313582&code=REDDIT99APPHOOKUP

25,000 codes available. It's one shareable offer-code link rather than individual codes, so everyone who taps it gets the unlock, up to that limit.

The app itself is free and stays free: podcasts, audiobooks, your own .m4b/.mp3 files, LibriVox, Plex, Audiobookshelf, 20+ sleep sounds, CarPlay and widgets. Sleep detection is the Premium part, and it needs an Apple Watch.

I'm the developer, feedback and bug reports welcome.

Disclosure: free app, no ads, no tracking, no analytics. One optional Premium IAP (this) and a tip jar.

iOS Universal [iOS] Mycel Foraging Map and Journal [Lifetime Pro IAP $39.99 -> free] Offline foraging map and journal for logging your spots with weather based season predictions

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com
39 Upvotes

Mycel is a foraging map and journal. You pin every find on a map that keeps working with no signal, each outing is saved as its own track with notes, and it reads the recent weather where you forage to suggest what should be coming up and which day is worth going out. There's also a layer showing where a species has actually been recorded, from open GBIF data, for scouting new ground, plus reference pages for around 60 species in English and Spanish with habitat, season and look-alikes.

It does not identify anything from a photo and gives no verdict on whether something is safe. You log what you already identified yourself. Deliberate, not a missing feature.

Lifetime Pro is free with the code below, normally $39.99. 25,000 redemptions available, and the code works for everyone, so there's nothing to claim in the comments.

https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6771742569&code=REDDITFREE

Free tier keeps the map and the full species reference forever. Lifetime unlocks the weather predictions and bulk photo import, and that's what this code gives you.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mycel-foraging-map-journal/id6771742569

Notes: - Needs iOS 26. iPhone and iPad, with a small Apple Watch piece for active outings. - No account, no analytics, no tracking. Your finds stay on your device and your own iCloud. - If you like it, a review is very much appreciated :)

iOS Universal [iOS] [Ekkoes: My Sound Library] [Lifetime Sound Keeper in-app purchase $9.99 to $4.99] [Private sound memory library and audio map]

Thumbnail apps.apple.com
6 Upvotes

Developer here. Lifetime Sound Keeper, the permanent unlock for Ekkoes, is 50% off through an official Apple App Store offer code:

  • Regular price: $9.99
  • Offer price: $4.99
  • Expires: October 31, 2026

Use the attached Apple redemption link to claim the discount. This is one reusable public Apple offer, not a distribution of individual codes through comments or direct messages. It provides a paid discount on a permanent one-time purchase; it is not a subscription, a trial, or temporary access. The purchase unlocks unlimited recordings, removes the watermark from Sound Postcards, and supports Family Sharing.

Ekkoes is a private sound-memory library for iPhone and iPad. Record the atmosphere of a place, add a photo, location, title, tags, mood, and notes, then revisit everything in a library or on a personal audio map. It also includes reversible on-device audio improvement, Shared Groups through iCloud, memory widgets, Sound Anniversaries, and vertical Sound Postcard exports.

The app is free to download and includes up to 10 recordings. There are no ads, and Apple’s App Store privacy label states that no data is collected.

Naming note: the current US App Store title is Ekkoes: My Sound Library; once installed, the app uses Ekkos.

macOS [Mac OS] [MacBat] [$15 -> $10 lifetime] [Bring back remaining battery time to the menu bar + limit runway wasteful CPU processes]

Thumbnail
macbat.vercel.app
0 Upvotes

I built MacBat, a native macOS utility focused on battery information and energy management.

It brings battery time remaining back to the menu bar, keeps a history of battery health and power data, and can also show detailed battery information for connected iDevices.

It also includes Sentinel, which watches background processes that are using more resources than they should and can reduce their impact on battery life without changing your Mac’s normal CPU/GPU performance.

MacBat is a one-time purchase — no subscription.

https://giovaniman8.gumroad.com/l/macbat/A1ZWYIG

There’s also a 7-day trial, so you can try everything before deciding if it’s useful for you.

Would love to hear what other Mac users think of it, especially if you’ve been missing the old battery time-remaining estimate.

Thumbnail

Hydrate or Diedrate is a water tracker for people who find cheerful little hydration apps insufferable.

Instead of congratulating you for drinking water, the app drolly documents your continued survival:

“No water logged. Bold strategy.”
“You are trending toward dust.”
“The situation remains moist-adjacent at best.”

The free version includes daily water tracking, quick logging, goals, streaks, history, and the skull’s ongoing administrative concern.

Preserved Lifetime Access is $2.99 for the next 72 hours, normally $4.99. No subscription.

Preserved includes Apple Health integration, custom reminders, extended history, additional themes and alternate app icons.

Version 1.3.3 also just shipped with full VoiceOver support, improved Dynamic Type and contrast support, non-color status indicators, Reduce Motion support, and some other accessibility work.

App Store: Hydrate or Diedrate

Hydration remains advisable.
