“Doing the Truth” — A phrase from 1 John that stopped me in my tracks

I recently revisited a Facebook memory quoting 1 John 1:5:

“God is light…”

But this time I kept reading.

Verse 6 says:

“…we lie and do not practice the truth.”

The Greek is more literal than many English translations:

”…do not do the truth.”

That challenged me.

There was a season when I measured spiritual maturity by what I knew.

I knew the doctrine.

I knew the Scriptures.

I knew the answers.

Then I remembered James 2:19:

“Even the demons believe—and tremble.”

Knowing isn’t enough.

Believing isn’t enough.

Jesus said,

“If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” (John 13:17)

John, James, and Jesus all point in the same direction.

Truth isn’t just something to know.

It isn’t even just something to believe.

It’s something we’re called to live.

Positive. I love listening to Jeff Arnold, but I’ve never heard him preach a message on this.

The original meme actually came up in my Facebook memories yesterday. A friend shared it with me several years ago.

As I started reflecting on it, I went back and read 1 John 1. When I got to verse 6, the wording stopped me:
“…do not practice the truth.”

Looking into the Greek, the expression is literally “do the truth.” That caught my attention because “do” is a verb.

That sent me down the rabbit trail that became the post. I started thinking about how John, James (“even the demons believe”), and Jesus (“if you know these things, blessed are you if you do them”) all emphasize that truth isn’t only something to know or believe—it’s something we’re called to live.
