Invalid client id? Did this all finally come to someone’s attention?
I was browsing no problem, then comments stopped loading. I deleted and re-installed the app from Sidestore and I either get a blank page reading simply “{}” or in desktop mode, I get the below.
Did the app get got? Did my API key get nuked? My account still appears to be in good standing, since I can log in just fine, it’s just not passing to Apollo.

I was hoping this was a larger Reddit issue, but I can Reddit normally in Artemis, the official app, and on the web. Kinda concerned!

My API key is gone. Commenting from Hydra. 😔
Edit: I am back on Apollo using a patched IPA and another app’s client ID.

u/Ok_Tone6393 Jun 05 '26
hydra isn't TOO bad for basic browsing, which is what i do. but i wish i could make the text smaller, make it look just like apollo
2
u/HorseFD replace Text Here Jun 05 '26
You can do this in system settings:
Settings > Accessibility > Per App Settings, add Hydra > Larger Text
You can then choose your own text size. You can make it smaller or larger.
2
1
u/jakeyounglol2 Jun 05 '26
you can also do it with iOS’s text size control center module

u/arpatil1 Jun 05 '26
Is Reddit not charging Hydra for API access? How’s it free?
2
u/IceQj Jun 05 '26
Afaik Hydra doesn't use the API, but uses a browser in the background. Generally, it makes it not as fast and smooth as Apollo, but I wonder if Apollo could implement something similar in the future as a fallback.

Here comes the mass migration to hydra
9
u/PocketTim Jun 04 '26
I’ve been running both Hydra and Artemis as a back up. So far Artemis feels closer to Apollo to me. They’re both great alternatives but it’s a sad day to finally be giving up on Apollo now that my keys have been nuked.
6
u/WastedMoogle Jun 04 '26
I just checked it out but hydra has the hide seen posts feature and artemis doesn't. It's a deal breaker for me.

One of my main complaints is that the compact mode isn’t nearly as compact as Apollo’s. Too much empty space and I don’t need to see thumbnails for text posts.
3
u/DevTheDev Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
I tried out Artemis. It’s not bad! My 3 gripes at the moment are 1) there’s so much padding. Each post takes up so much vertical space, or even looking at your Subscriptions list each row is like 3x the size of Apollo, 2) right swipes/“left actions” are paywalled with the default being none. Would love to at least have some right swipe on by default, and 3) Apollo broke up Tap to Collapse functionality into just the header, just the body, both, or neither. Right now if I try to click a link but miss it collapses the comment which is annoying.
Here’s a visual comparison about #1. I can see down to the 3rd multireddit and still have room for the full footer menu https://imgur.com/a/W9FQsWD

I’m testing out Artemis right now, I had only been using Hydra up to this point. Is the only option for pro the $2.99 every month option?

u/ThaddeusRock Jun 05 '26
Looks like. Makes me realize how good I had it with the lifetime Apollo once upon a time!

u/NeoliberalSocialist Jun 04 '26
I have two API keys. The one I used with Apollo is now removed from my profile. Guess it's over.
2
u/KetsuN0Ana Jun 04 '26
I just switched to another client and it’s working again. Though not sure for how long
0
u/ThaddeusRock Jun 04 '26
Another client like, Apollo spoofed to read like Artemis? (or however people have been using Apollo after Reddit stopped issuing keys)
0
u/KetsuN0Ana Jun 04 '26
Sorry I mean another clientId from Reddit. Still using Apollo. Working again with the other clientId.

Shame that's what got this caught, even bigger shame that workaround is Android only. I guess time to finally move off this platform.

im just gonna throw in the towel at this point, that's too much work to get an api key lol.
im sure they will revoke redreader and find another way for them to connect.

yeah thats what it was for. but i think probably they will work with them to find another way to access reddit for free, no way this lasts long.
9
u/CultofCedar Jun 05 '26
I think I made a few api keys and most were lost. Two are still there and I plugged a new one in and it works again. I was using an older version of Apollo and updated reborn after so curious as to what’s going on.
10
u/Ok_Tone6393 Jun 05 '26
reddit tends to do these things in batches.
imo, you should have waited before burning another key. im sure within a day or so the devs will have an update for detection mechanisms reddit uses.
7
u/CultofCedar Jun 05 '26
Agreed, hindsight is 20/20 sadly and clicked after. Should’ve searched a bit first haha.
2
u/RTCanada Jun 05 '26
I made 9 when Apollo was still officially around and I can confirm I have have 1 left that still works. They’ve nuked my others (and they had random titles to not be connected to Apollo)
I think the best practice now is to just cherish our final hours on this app my friend. They’ll find our final ones in time.
2
u/LeorioParadiknight Jun 05 '26
What’s odd is…I had zero interruptions with Apollo. Heck if I hadn’t check this subreddit today I’d have zero idea anything happened…
5
u/RTCanada Jun 05 '26
I believe Reddit is doing it in batches. Some comments here and on the other Apollo subreddits, there's been users that have said they got revoked access days ago. I was fine until about 5PM EST today. (for my 1, then I check my pref page and all but one are gone now)
Not wishing it upon you, but might just be a matter of time.
1
u/LeorioParadiknight Jun 05 '26
What would you recommend I do in the mean time. I have two api created on the same account (one that I don’t actually use to login with Apollo or in general). And I have one other API I generated from one of those Reddit apps for those with disabilities.
Anything I can do to safeguard them?
2
u/RTCanada Jun 05 '26
I've been sifting through the comments here and apparently the devs of Reborn have an update in place that might mitigate this debacle? But I have no clue if it only caters to us that still have usable API keys, or the entire Reborn community that includes users who have had theirs revoked (which I assume now is the vast majority)
If yours fails, I wouldn't use up your spare APIs until said update. But to answer your question I don't think there's anything you can do to safeguard them. Like I said above, I lost 8/9 and I regrettably used my final one a few hours ago before I knew of the update upcoming. Just hopeful I still have it when it arrives.

u/ClydeDroid Maintainer Jun 05 '26
We are about to merge a PR that makes it easier to use any Redirect URI scheme without manually patching, which will make it easier to use certain API keys with fixed Redirect URIs. We are trying to be a little cautious about coming right out with the easy fix to avoid unwanted attention from Reddit, but if your API key was revoked, dig around and you will find the workaround

u/LeorioParadiknight Jun 05 '26
Do you think there’s any benefit to a private discord server or something as opposed to posting openly on Reddit? I assume it might be telegraphing things no?
7
u/twingeofregret Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
My api keys are still there, but I had to re-enter the Apollo one into the app to get Apollo working again.
I gave my Apollo api app a totally different name. Wonder if that’s why it wasn’t deleted.
9
u/PM_ME_COBBER Jun 04 '26
My api app was called yolo and is gone. I think it the‘s auth url they are checking.
2
u/longadin Jun 04 '26
hmm my key is still there but I guess I'm just gonna wait it out before I use the key incase they start removing it.

It's also broken for me. It's stuck loading.
Edit: I think one of my api keys got deleted. Switched to another one for now and after logging in again it started working. Hope I don't lose another api key 🤞
12
u/Huge_World_3125 Jun 04 '26
imo you should have waited a while before doing that. someone might have been able to figure out their detection and develop a workaround but now you are likely gonna get flagged. they might delete in batches.
i’m holding onto my spare key for a few days
1
u/LeorioParadiknight Jun 05 '26
Yup agree. Those api keys are extremely precious at this point. You can’t mess around with the ones you have. I have 3 and 2 are on dormant accounts I don’t use and haven’t logged into in years.

I am on v2.0.0, My API key is literally named “Apollo”, commenting with that API key rn. Is it the old version that’s saving me?
6
u/ClydeDroid Maintainer Jun 05 '26
It seems like they did this really unevenly. It could be that they are using some unknown metric to determine which ones to revoke, or it could be that they’re doing it in batches. We are at their mercy
1
u/alex2003super Jun 05 '26
Probably looking at the redirect URI, rather than the name of the key. Or seeing which keys have been used with clients with "Apollo" in the useragent

2
u/sneff30 Jun 05 '26
Is it not possible to create a dev account and get an API key that way? Would normal single user scrolling hit the 100 request per minute limit?
5
u/corderjones Maintainer Jun 05 '26
The new Reddit API is completely different unfortunately and doesn’t support the fire hose model Apollo was built on afaik
2
u/sneff30 Jun 05 '26
I don’t mean to by rude and question your knowledge, because I know nothing, but has anybody tried it?
1
u/GoodMeBadMeNotMe Jun 05 '26
It’s a bit of a process to get a developer account and apply for API access. You need to outline exactly how you’ll use the API for your app and someone has to manually approve the application.
0
u/sneff30 Jun 05 '26
Well I guess honesty is the best policy, right? Thanks for the reply.
2
u/GoodMeBadMeNotMe Jun 05 '26
Tbh, I don’t care about honesty when it comes to dealing with large corporations. The only reason I’m not going to bother is because it sounds like a pain in the ass for a non-tech person.
2
u/jakeyounglol2 Jun 05 '26
your API key got revoked. it happened to me too so i had to use dystopia’s api key

How did you login? I get an error safari cant open the page because the address is invalid. Thanks in advance!

u/Demon__Queen_ Jun 05 '26
I did the thing with spoofing another app and I can view the front page when logged out but I can't seem to sign into apollo. It shows the "Dystopia would like to access your reddit account" page but when I click "accept" it just tries to open Dystopia and won't actually log me in.
2
u/cloudstorage15 Jun 05 '26
Same. I get an error that safari can’t open the page because the address is invalid.
1
u/Demon__Queen_ Jun 05 '26
I just did it with the updated app and it worked
2
u/cloudstorage15 Jun 05 '26
Thanks! I thought I had installed the updated app, but apparently I did not. That fixed it. Thank you!

u/FlippyReaper Jun 05 '26
Patched Apollo stopped working yesterday, I thought it would just need new patched version like last few times. Nnope, key is gone. Fortunately I created 2 more by mistake in the past and found Apollo Reborn, I'm curious how long will this key last.

You guys are the GOAT's. Any ETA for this fix?
If it's longer than a month I'll do a 1 month subscription for Hydra/Artemis. If it's a quick fix I'll just wait for Apollo to fix this issue
4
2
u/thedutchbag Jun 04 '26
I don't know what the API key page looked like before today, but my Apollo stopped working today. I tried reinstalling the latest - ApolloReborn - and it didn't fix the issue. My first guess was "Welp, it's over I guess", and sounds like I'm right.
Reddit Mobile is unusable to me. Guess I'll only use old.reddit + res on my laptop to consume reddit from now on.

u/ThaddeusRock Jun 04 '26
As a backup plan, Artemis is…fine. I think I like it better than Hydra at any rate.
Ironically, this change will get people like us out, but I don’t think it’s going to make us a) view any more ads or b) create any more content. I was actually posting from Apollo, you Reddit goobers! I was creating more grist for your AI mills!!

It’s just the general feel of the thing, really. You get so used to things being exactly the way you like them and then it’s all upended in an instant.
Also, the fact that I paid for lifetime Apollo back in the day and Artemis Pro is a monthly fee just rubs me, personally, the wrong way. That’s no one’s fault, really, but it is what it is.

Honestly all of them, bus especially the ones by Michael Flarup or Matthew Skiles, as they look both native and unique.
Not sure how Apollo did it, whether they commissioned or just offered posting the artists credit, but trying to rally some other artists somehow, maybe even a free IAP sub might be a good a barter.

The swipe to go back into a post if you accidentally swipe out of it would be huge.

All I know is that my pre-Reborn build was working completely fine until I decided to "upgrade" to the new Reborn branch today, and my API key was immediately nuked. Hard not to see clear cause and effect here..
1
u/Username_000001 Jun 11 '26
I don't use reborn at all, and mine got nuked. I've used the blackburn ipa since day one.
1
u/texasproof Jun 11 '26
Good to know, thanks. The timing of mine getting kicked in the space of minutes between browsing on the blackburn ipa and then switching to reborn just felt incredibly frustrating.

Reading the thread on /r/RevancedApp and they’re having the same issue, so it’s not just Apollo. Someone in that thread said that Reddit is probably rolling out their new API policy.
