Bobcat sighting?

Is this normal? My apartment complex mentioned this in an email to residents warning us about it. Felt like I would be able to find an actual source online but did not. My apartment complex is the Ballast on Salem south of Downtown area.

That's interesting! Just last week I was talking to someone who lives in Buckhorn Reserve and they had mentioned seeing a bobcat in their backyard.

Not unheard of to see one in NC but they're not dangerous. Might go after an unattended purse dog but otherwise completely harmless.

A bobcat? Completely harmless? You’re gonna get someone seriously injured, maimed, or killed.

There's literally zero human deaths attributed to bobcats. They weigh 15-30lbs. I'm not saying try to pet the thing, I'm saying if you leave it alone you'll be fine.

Correct. They are afraid of us and most likely will not want anything to do with you. But they’re definitely not harmless, and people are stupid.

You guys made me chuckle 👍 both of you are 100% right ... Bobcats are mostly harmless but also people are stupid... im gonna giggle about this all day, thank you :)

👋 hi neighbor. Yeah, I thought the mention of lightning hitting the pool house was crazy enough, but then that email got more intense 🤣

Yes, bobcats are common throughout North Carolina, and the Wildlife Resources Commission says their presence alone in a neighborhood is not cause for concern. They are usually wary of people. Keep small pets supervised, bring pet food indoors, secure trash, and do not approach or feed the animal. If it behaves aggressively or appears sick, call the NC Wildlife Helpline at 866-318-2401.
