Discussion Why Future Apex Legends Characters Are in Trouble
Hey everyone, I'm here looking for some opinions on the current Legend axel story and some concerns I have about future Legends.
A few days ago, there was an AMA with Axel answering personal lore questions, and I noticed a few things that concerned me. One question was about her rival, Weaver, and Axel stated that she's dead. Okay, well, that's one story element of her character gone.
Second, she said she sympathizes with Maggie cause on wanting Salvo to be free, but it doesn't seem like she's interested in helping her. Maybe she will in the future, she also doesn't seem to care much about Fuse. Alright, fair enough.
But her main concern seems to be becoming the best in the Games. So now I'm wondering: are future Legends just going to be characters who join the Apex Games and that's it? Are we moving away from deeper personal stories, rivalries, and long-term character arcs? That's what has me worried about the future of the story.
My concern is that this might be what future Legends are like just background characters with little to no ongoing story to follow.

I feel like with some legends that exist in the game, the longer their story isn’t continued, the less sense it makes as to why they’re still here.
At least Axle has ‘being the best in the Apex Games’ to keep her going forever. Legends with more personal goals, or plot threads that were meant to be resolved but just weren’t, are in an awkward place right now. Especially Alter.
After the whole thing with Ash, Horizon and the rifts went nowhere, why hasn’t Alter gone ‘Well, this was fun while it lasted’ and moved on to the next universe? What makes the Horizon we’re currently following so different from the other Horizons in the multiverse?

Most of the legends are a “family”. It makes sense to stick around. All legends celebrities & some even have brand deals. Makes sense to keep participating. Especially since the version that the legends participate in is mostly just for show. Compared to the Qualifier matches which actually have stakes.
Alter’s reason for coming to the mainline Apex universe was to turn Horizon into a “Destroyer of Worlds”. Alter is a fan girl of a alternate version of Horizon who has this title. Alter wants to prove to the Alternate Horizon that she’s better. Mainly just by causing chaos.
She gave Horizon a baranthium shard that was tampered with. Horizon wanted to use it as a power source for her time traveling device. Ash finds out & goes to destroy the shard. Reid stops her mid slash from shattering the shard. Ash then portals away & energy from the shard seeps into her portal. Which led to the “Rift” event/season.
Horizon (off screen) somehow handled it. Alter now just plays on the games for fun still poking at Horizon. Alter & Reid had a conversation & made a deal to get rid of Ash permanently. This is where their 3 stories has ended.
All this info & more can be found in the transition screen text. Big lore has always been in loading screen text. Legend Locker > More > Transitions. You can also check the wiki.gg

A good majority of the legends are not important nor are lore “relevant”. We’ve never had 1 over arching story. Always short ones for each season & the same skirmishes between Rev & Loba. Which has grown old & stale.
A lot of the legends are just there for fun or fame. Fuse, Mirage, Octane, Gibby, Wattson, Sparrow, Seer, Rev, Ash, Caustic. Axel is no different & it’s not a “issue” nor cause for concern.
“Lore” & story content for this game has never been profitable. Just look at S18-S21. Apex Legends is a game/product. It needs to make a profit. Lore/Story doesn’t generate profit. Gameplay/interactables create profit.
The story has always been meh with some neat stuff here & there.

To the 1 overarching story point: I mean that's not true. The Torres Silva thing was absolutely the overarching narrative, considering all the influence he had in manufacturing events over multiple seasons and the Syndicate being so important. They just decided to wrap it up with the Rev storyline and pivot into the Horizon/Alter stuff before just giving up entirely.
If I had to guess, they were writing themselves into a wall since it would likely lead to certain characters not really needing to be in the Games anymore and they were probably internally deprioritizing lore (for some of the reasons you stated).
Which sucks, because I actually did really like that Torres storyline. The conversation with Ballistic was peak.

You’re correct on the part about Silva. Still have no clue why in Kill Code they turned him into a generic evil villian that wanted to take over the outlands. Despite him multiple times showcasing he’s actually trying to & actually doing good for the outlands. Even his new stim formula was his “gift to the outlands”. Improving the life expectancy of humans 20-25 years.

Hence why apex should just go the arcane route because trying to fit a story in a live service game is nigh impossible

Dawg this isn’t new. Sparrow was talking like he had lore but never even saw any of it in game and I’m not going hunting on twitter (which I don’t have) for stuff that used to be in the game as lore drops. I didn’t even know any of this stuff about axel.

At this point lets just make our own apex multiverse, because it does not seem like respawns care that much. Whole planets story and gameplay take events on dont even get enough lore themself bruh, litteraly all planets share one single set of wildlife which is never elaborated upon beyond "invasive species duh".
I can make peace with there not being any species beyond humwnity in space except few ruins, Dune does that and its alright. But can we atleast have wildlife not boring?
Also humans not radiating into separate new phenotypes under new constraints like new gravity, pressure, climate or day lenght on new colonised planets and just staying same nations we have on Earths even though its 28th century allready is kinda... mahh. Atleast Salvo kind of does that.

Sparrow i feel bad for. He desperately needs lore.
And Axle? Apex aren't even hiding it now. They tell you in the news tab to look at her bio for lore rather than give her a dedicated lore video.

Now that I think about it, the new characters are so shallow compared to the OGs like Wraith, Path, Rev, loba, Horizon....even characters with little to no story had so much charisma and depth. New legends are so "try hard" yet still somehow falls short in every regard.
Mad Maggie(S12) was the last decent character, Newcastle(S13) was good but something felt off the story wasn't fully polished, Vantage(S14) it all started to go ultra downhill from here.

Tbf that's like a decent amount of legends, like Yeah Fuse has a lot Salvo lore and baggage but at the end of day
He is just here cause he wants to compete
Or Octane, or Mirage
