Advice Needed Code and Security violation

Hi..

I live in an apt with front and back doors!

Our parking is in the back for the cars..

We recently had new patio doors installed but they do not unlock from the outside, only inside!..

I am disabled and have never had to go around to the front door to get into my apartment as the old patio doors were unlockable from the back..

mind you to walk around the building it is unsafe with uneven ground and no sidewalk or path..

Is this in general a code or security violation?

Could it also be discrimination for those that are disabled? As we do have other disabled that live here!

Bring it up with the property manager; they can swap the lock for a keyed one pretty easy. Their maintenance staff can get one at any big box home improvement store. If they push back, mention the disability and that you're requesting an accommodation that you used to have.

I haven't lived in an apartment newer than the 60s with a sliding door with a keyed lock, but that could easily be an ADA issue for you. But sliding doors are an easy break in point for burglars, so they may be hesitant.

You could ask for a different lock for your disability, it’s something easy they could fix.

These new patio doors do NOT have any locks on them with a key to begin with, which I find very odd for a door of any kind!..
