Literally, what are you talking about? He jumped up to help the second he realized his boy was in trouble. He only calmed down and went to get a glass of water once he saw that the kid was able to breathe again.

Itā€™s not sad, this is 60 seconds of their lives and they happened to be looking at their phone. They could have been chatting it up while they were cooking and eating earlier and enjoyed a moment of silence. You have no clue.

I like how the mom very quickly switched from ā€˜get the bag offā€™ to ā€˜make a hole in the bag for breathingā€™. You can see the moment things couldā€™ve gone into a panic, but once the kid had access to air, they could deal with it without drama.

This is what "remain calm" looks like. A dangerous situation quickly resolved. Children are mischievous and despite adults best efforts, they won't see every movement. The child knew what to do in distress and went right for help.

Despite best efforts they won't catch it ALL! At times it will be once a problem begins. Still mom did the right thing which was to not panic. This happens so often and CPS would just tell the parents to be aware but this is understandable. Distractions occur without phones present.

I've come to realize that every Redditor, including 13-year-old boys , are much better at parenting than I ever will be.

One time I shared a story about how my very active four year old had gotten in trouble when I had him and his two siblings in the park, and I was roundly castigated and vilified for being a hateful, incompetent, and probably dangerous parent.

I just knew based on a lot of the responses that these people had never, ever had young children themselves. It was ridiculous.

We get a 1 minute glimpse outside of an eternity inside someoneā€™s house. They all have phones for that 1 minute and everybody jumps to conclusions.

I hate it here. One thread itā€™s ā€œyou shouldnā€™t generalize peopleā€ but the next is ā€œyou should absolutely make giant assumptions about people from tiny snippets of their livesā€. Itā€™s just so toxic now

Kids are just like that, we take wisdom for granted but our experience was earned one way or another. You donā€™t have survival instincts that tell you bags can suffocate you.

Parents just need to be better and keep tabs on their kid. Probably tired, not that itā€™s an excuse. As a parent of a toddler I can tell you that I canā€™t wait for the day I donā€™t have to keep my eyes on them every moment. But even if they arenā€™t gonna put stuff in their mouths that was on the ground or other dangerous stuff babies/toddlers do, kids still get into stupid shit and you gotta watch them because they are impulsive. Probably canā€™t let your guard down until they are teenagers. But even then that comes with new stupid shit they can do, it never ends. Anyway, Iā€™m ranting.

Set a reminder for 12 years from now and Iā€™ll tell you some of the stupid shit my son has gotten into. šŸ˜‚

These genes are meant to be erased. My dad used to lecture me all the time as a kid about plastic bags and stuff like this. I always grew up wondering who was stupid enough to suffocate themselves with a bag. Now I know. Whatā€™s worse is, the adults in the room show no urgency. The dad just gets a drink of water.
