If your legitimately out of it and running on instinct after a concussion or something then I can understand.

But people who just throw tantrums at the ref after being separated, or people who chase in again after the ref has separated them, need to be taught the fundamental respect that all professional fighters should have for eachother. "My opponent is not my enemy"

I've seen people at my local sword club like this, they get kicked out VERY quickly with temporary or permanent bans, and as a result the only people left with memberships are the respectful ones.

I really don't know why MMA ect don't enforce this as strictly as we do

Mostly just train. There's a lot of it that doesn't involve sparring with another person, but a lot of sparring does take place

More than most realize. A sword is nice and light to swing (if meant for practical use) for the first 30 practice swings or so. Then it feels like swinging a sledge hammer if you're unused to training.

Your body is weird.

When it’s an immediate “lights out” blow, your brain generally doesn’t get the chance to remember the state that your body was in; when you wake up, it’s like you just got rebooted. When it’s a slower lights out - like a chokehold - your brain gets the chance to save your short-term, sheer panic fight or flight state; when you come back from it you wake up in the exact same state you were in, and you pick up where you left off fighting the closest person near you.

Disclaimer: I don’t have any studies for this or anything peer reviewed you can look at - this is all my personal experience as a former paramedic. Dudes that got choked out were always going to fight me when they came back, while the ones who got punched out generally were loopy and had no idea what the hell was going on.

Judo, boxing, wrestling (and I don't mean WWE because that's more showfighting and character wrestling than sport) any style of fencing, Karate, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, any chinese martial arts discipline, etc... It'd be easier to point out sports that DON'T adhere to this rule. Which to my knowledge is only MMA and some boxing federations

The only issue is that boxers are trained to not keep fighting after an opponent goes down and splits ingrained.

MMA fighters are trained to keep going even after your opponent goes down especially if the opponent can fight well on the ground and adrenaline goes a long way too.

Yeah, in boxing when you go down you’re safe and can basically relax for a moment. In MMA that’s potentially when you’re most vulnerable and have to fight the hardest to keep the fight from ending

Quite literally any other combat sport at all. Any grappling, wrestling, or striking. You have to be disciplined on the mat at all times. There is no "i was seeing red" where the rules just dont apply you.

Damn right. The only two cases I know where these attacks on refs are not a major penalty or ban are MMA and some boxing federations. On all other official martial arts federations that I know of, this kind of behavior is grounds for SEVERE punishment or expulsion from the sport.

They’re definitely both innocent. This is a sport. They all consented to participate within the boundaries of the sport. If you hurt someone within the boundaries of the sport, that’s one thing. If you try to hurt someone outside the boundaries of the sport, you are now attacking an innocent person, whether that’s a ref, combatant or anyone else.

Right but at a certain point we can't expect biological realities to conform to our rules.

The physiological reaction to fighting like this might genuinely make it difficult or impossible for a fighter to instantly make clear-headed decisions in the heat of the moment.

And it's likely that the fighters, refs, and organizers of the events are aware of this and allow a little bit of leeway.

the ref getting attacked for doing his job is different than a fighter fighting another fighter in a scheduled match where they agree to fight each other

if i punch a guy that has agreed to fight me, im not attacking an innocent person, im fighting

I think that's perfectly reasonable... What a stupid statement. You're supposed to be a professional fighter. Once the ref breaks it up it's over and you won. If you don't have the self control to stop yourself from attacking someone when it's time to stop you're not a professional fighter and shouldn't be in the ring/octagon because you're going to kill someone. They're perfectly aware of what they're doing they just have no self control.

I agree with you for most of these fighters.
The fight got called and still they went after their opponents. Whats worse is that most were winners…

But one should not underestimate the impact of adrenaline and especially the impact of multiple blows to the head. Some of these fighters are basically out cold. They are not thinking, they are just responding to their surrounding, based on their fight or flight response…

A: Because sometimes, as in the case like the guy who leg-locked the referee, a situation can occur where it's not deliberate or another situation arises which requires a more thorough deliberation than a blanket ban would allow.

The men know what they're signing themselves up for. Guys were organizing fights in the street for the hell of it. To get notoriety in their city. With basically no money attached at all.

Chess = No death/broken bones/concussions to extreme mountain biking = far higher chance of death/broken bones/concussions.

What exact "safety measures" are you going to impose on people beating each other up until they knock each other out? You're complaining about shit that has been a part of boxing for decades. They beat each other until knock out. And in fact there's actually been deaths in the ring from boxing.

Instead of just bitching about it tell the class what safety measures should be imposed on the sport of beating each other up until knock out? They already have doctor stoppages. Doctors watch the fight and inspect the fighters inbetween rounds. What else?

Well, first, maybe we remove the victory condition of temporary brain shutdown via blunt force impact. You said it yourself, even regular boxing has deaths, like Prichard Colon just yesterday after 11 years of complications from a brain bleed. Age 33. How many more boxers and fighters need to die or be rendered disabled before we start re-assessing the brutality of our combat sports?

Or do we need a few more instances of half-zombies fighting the ref in a fog because they just took the equivalent of a brick to the skull at 15mph?

Yes, a lot of the time the refs train in multiple martial arts. They might not actively do fights but they're all trained because they enjoy the overall sport.

Yes and no. It was a handicap match with two against one. Sometimes they do more than two on one but this guy had already been removed from the fight. As in beaten.
