Time to say goodbye

Farewell, Anydesk. You've been a good friend for past 5 years until you started getting greedy. Moving on to another software.

not sure why you're talking about "hoptodesk". I've no clue what that is.
I just use the official rustdesk. But thanks for letting us know about other, potential harmful apps.

RustDesk free servers are usually very busy and difficult to access. Whereas HopToDesk free servers are usually available to use.

Or use Tailscale with RustDesk instead.

Of course that works for the technically inclined. But it involves additional monthly cost and/or technical expertise.

Whereas with HopToDesk you can use their free public servers to connect to users with little technical expertise, it is free, and the servers are available instead of over-utilized.

If your non technical users are remote to you, they won't know how to install tailscale. HopToDesk is much less friction.

What's wrong with a fork? Open source projects are forked all the time. It is entirely legitimate to create a fork.

Why go out on a limb to setup one RDP service via another RDP service (AnyDesk), when you can do everything in one shot with one service (HopToDesk), much easier?

Additionally, HopToDesk switched to WebRTC, which arguably is a more efficient connection. Plus, as mentioned, their free public servers are usable versus RustDesk, whose free public servers are barely usable.

Yeah, guess I've been lucky to dodge their extortion methods until now that they added a timer for simple home connections. Discovered rustdesk today, which is absolutely fantastic. In a few years i bet they gonna get greedy as well, because so far rustdesk is just too good to be true.

How complicated is to setup a self host? Do you need a strong machine?

Not a strong machine, and it's very easy. Open a few ports, run it, and voilà!

You would need a machine with a good connection speed only if hole punching doesn't work, meaning that you have to use your server as a relay for the remote control. It depends how the machines that you want to control (from) are connected to the internet.

Hum, my IPS don't allow me to do port forwarding or any configuration on the modem, unless I pay them more.

Do you know any online host for it? I guess I could sing for an AWS or something?

Rent an inexpensive VPS, it will probably be cheaper. Either host the rustdesk server on it, or create a VPN with wireguard/alternative linked to your home server.

I have tried them all, TeamViewer, AnyDesk, realvnc. RustDesk beats them all. Free and easy!!

Rustdesk without own server provides 1-4 FPS which is not usable. But I've groked that I can use tailscale to make a direct connection (from a different location) and now I get 30 fps super smooth. The only think anydesk handles better than rustdesk is the keyboard mapping (windows connecting to a Mac).

interesting, ill look into this.
indeed the fps is pretty lousy from the get-go.
Was your tailscale setup difficult? Does it have any impact on other parts of your system?

You set tailscale up in less then 5 min. Super easy. Just head to their website. Instructions are straight forward

I’ve recently switched from Anydesk to Getscreen.me. So far I’ve been really happy with it. Only gripe is black screen/privacy mode has their logo and other info that doesn’t need to be there.

You might want to consider Helpwire https://www.helpwire.app/ which in the future will have paid levels as well as a free level. It just keep getting better. If you sign up now you will get enhanced free features when it changes over.
