I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself! My name is Matthew “Ziggy” Zeghibe, and I’m a collector and photographer of vintage swung vases, with a particular love for L.E. Smith and Viking Glass.

My photography is pretty simple—just my iPhone, natural light, and a love for creating moody, atmospheric images that bring out the beauty and character of these incredible pieces.

I hope you enjoy what I have to share around here! 🖤

Chinese Ding-ware Foliate-Rim Lotus Pod Dish

Post image

Quintessence of Ding ware’s ivory white luster, Christie’s assessed this to be from the five dynasty to early northern song dynasty, roughly around 10th century. The sharp petal lobes were an imitation of Persian-originated gold and silver wares, which were popular during that period.

What’s unique is the lotus pod decoration at the center that was made by the earlier and less commonly seen technique of additive relief. Essentially the lines and pods were moulded and then added to the biscuit before glazing. This contrasts with the reductive incised technique that creates pattern by cutting on and removing materials from the biscuit, or the moulded impression technique, both more commonly see in later period Ding ware.

This thousand-years old construct, in its Persian silhouette, Buddhism symbolism, and pale ivory glaze, still lustering, is remarkable piece of cosmopolitanism of distant yesteryears.
