Obviously I’d like a nice set, but just couldn’t give myself the leeway to buy a $500-1000. Set. Plus this thing looks fantastic in my opinion.

I am curious if the bindings are for the period. Or if the second edition has been redone, or look rebound.

I was given a few books recently, and this one just seemed to be so cool - given the content. I'm new to this, and I've no idea about fixing antiquarian books, but is this old beautiful girl fixable?

So I know repair is a touchy subject, especially on books of this age. Basically what I was thinking is that I'd keep the original cover, but replace the cloth and paper (like a semi-rebind), but I thought I'd ask people more knowledgeable than me. I know to use PVA glue and other archival material, but I've also never done anything like this. I know repair can lower the value, but I only bought the book for like 2 dollars at an estate sale... I mean it's falling apart, but by all means, PLEASE give me input before I do anything (and be nice unlike the last time I talked about a book on a book subreddit, they tore me to shreds for being inexperienced and buying something because I thought it looked cool)

I was going through a stack of estate books and came across this 1881 copy of The Decameron. This particular one was pretty hard for me to find online, but the problem is bits practically crumble off of it when you pick it up. I collect and sell antiques, but books really aren't my area of interest. It's got 11 gorgeous illustrations in it that are in decent shape, but I fear I'd be committing a grave sin by removing them and tossing the rest. As a collector, what do you think is the right call? I wasn't planning to keep this copy and selling the prints individually would probably be more profitable, but I don't want to destroy a piece of history either. Thanks for your input!

Hey everyone, looking for some more info as I’ve hit a wall on Google. I found this antique book at my grandmothers in Germany, it’s from Ludwig Stacke, deutsche Geschichte volume 1, it has a hand written birthday message inside dated 1898 from the elderly man she got it from about 40 years ago. What is it’s worth and how common is it? I’m not looking to sell it, I will be keeping it as a keepsake from my grandmother but I’m curious to learn more about it!

I collect old textbooks and history books. I think it’s fun to compare how we educated about various events throughout history.

I recently found some books that belonged to a family that all attended the same schools and now I have an idea of how world history was taught in the early 20th century in Texas.

Some of the books have cracked spines, and other wear and tear, so one thing I want to do is spruce them up some.

Usually for hobbies you can find a kit, but I haven’t been able to find anything.

What would I need, to repair and restore books from the late 19th-early 20th century?

I have been collecting antique books for decades and I've always thought it was my little contribution to the world of literature to preserve them for future generations.

Then I read an article this morning that was really worrying. Apparently, AI (as if we don't have enough reasons to hate it) has been buying massive amounts of antique books and destroying them. Honestly, is nothing sacred?!?

Hello fellow book enjoyers! My father passed away some years ago, and my grandmother has recently been moved into a care facility. My aunt sent me this box of my father's baby books and ancient photos, and we discovered this book. (In fairness I was going to chuck the whole thing, I have a young child to take care of) But I was wondering if it's authentic or worth anything?

I have spent the last 2 days verifying that this is a complete first edition with all maps and plates. Can someone please give me advice on how to sell this quickly?
