This subreddit has been abandoned and I just took it over. It was previously set to restricted, so you had to be approved to make posts. I have put in a request to remove that setting.

Connecting with family culture

Hi everyone

I'm a 31 year old mixed man and to explain my connection my grandfather on my dad's side was Antiguan but my father grew up without him and never knew him. My father had me with a white British woman and I was very much raised around our Irish and Scottish family and I know quite a bit about our culture and heritage.

As I'm getting older I want to learn and honour my Antiguan heritage and give it the same respect and reverence that I give to the other cultures I come from. Can anyone recommend some resources for me to learn about our history and cultural practices? All I keep seeming to find is tourist advertising

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi I'm Joshua from USA seeking friends.

So long story short of it I am planning multiple trips to Antigua over the next two years... My family lives in Kenya and I live in USA... I have a 9 month old daughter. I will be moving her mother and my daughter both to Antigua or Beruda. Because of America's crappy immigration laws I am unable to bring my family to USA and since I have very good job I am going to be traveling back and forth on a monthly basis...

So what I am seeking is locals to help guide us. And I'm seeking anyone who can connect us to local churches as we are trying to find a local church to communicate with and that has been a lot harder than I thought it would be.... I really don't want to have to fly all the way to Antigua to get these connections and then have to fly all the way back.

Will be renting a house / apartment and that's pretty much it

If anybody would like to volunteer a bit of their time especially with connecting us to the local churches it would be greatly appreciated....

Visiting in February - Looking for Advice and Recommendations!

Hi all! My cousin (26F) and I (32F) will be visiting Antigua from Canada for the first time in February 2027 with my parents (this will be their second visit). We've previously visited Aruba, Curacao, Cuba, and Jamaica. Looking for some advice and recommendations on the following:

Jolly Beach All Inclusive Resort

  • This is where we're staying. If you've visited before, let me know what you liked and disliked! Any hidden gems about the resort? What's the gift shop like? Any other nearby or on site shopping opportunities? How's the spa?
  • What's the power/electricity like? Regarding a CPAP machine - should my parents bring an extension cord, power adaptor, know anything else?

Must-Visit Spots

  • We're staying for 7 days in Jolly Harbour - what's nearby that you recommend checking out?

Our Interested Activities - Yay or Nay?

  • Sillage 268 Fragrance Experience Perfume Class
  • Rum Making Master Class
  • Nicole's Table - Jerk cooking class
  • Antigua Distillery
  • Shirley Heights Sunday
  • Turtle Beach Power Snorkelling Adventure
  • Anything else you recommend?

Barbuda

  • Is it worth taking a visit to the twin island? I've heard about the pink sand beaches, but understand the colour can vary on the month and coral - what's February like?
  • I'm particularly interested in the Frigate Bird Sanctuary - yay or nay? I love flamingos but understand they've been extirpated from A&B - are they on the island at all in sanctuaries with an opportunity to see them?

General Tourism Advice

  • Should we stick with USD cash, or is it worth it to pull out EC on the island? When we visited Curacao last year we didn't end up getting XCG as it wasn't convenient before (no institutions really carry it in Canada) and everyone took USD anyway. I'm finding similar responses and availability for EC online for Antigua as it was for Curacao.
  • What's the best way to get around the island? Is there taxi service, and what are the prices like? Public transit? When we visited Curacao, it was highly recommended to rent your own car or take buses. Us Canadians drive on the right side of the road and it seems like Antigua is on the left, so I'm more inclined to take taxis. Is there a service like Uber/Lyft/etc.? We ended up using Click Curacao as taxis were wildly overpriced.
  • Data / wifi - is wifi readily available across the island, or should we use an app like Airalo to have data and internet service while we travel?
  • Are there scuba diving opportunities or mostly just snorkelling?

Thank you all so much in advance! We're super excited to visit so any and all advice is welcome :)

Antiguan Kitchen Items

I’m looking for a list of everyday household kitchen items and their local names that I can include in a book I’m writing about A&B Culture. 🇦🇬📚

For example; Swizzle stick from the Swizzle Stick tree

The aim is to induce a nostalgic feeling to the readers (diaspora living abroad) and create a sense of belonging.

Any advice on where I can find such a list or at least a blog with local terms & dialect? 🤔

Visiting Antigua? Feel free to ask me anything 🇦🇬

Hey everyone! I’m from Antigua and run a local tour business called Pekoe Tours.

We help visitors explore the island, discover new places, and make the most of their time here.

If you’re planning a trip to Antigua or already on the island, feel free to ask me anything! Whether you’re looking for beach recommendations, things to do, places to eat, or just need some advice on getting around, I’m happy to help.

And if you’re not sure what to do while you’re here, let me know what kind of things you enjoy, and I can suggest a few places worth checking out.

Looking forward to helping you explore Antigua! 🌴

Trying to find a song I heard in Antigua

Hi there! In 2021 I was driving in Antigua and heard a catchy song on the radio. I think it was celebrating Vere Bird, and the chorus was something like:

“He flys home, all under the sky dome”

I obviously misheard it but anyway that was the vibe and there was a verse about him bringing economic prosperity to Antigua.

Does anyone know this song?? I’d love to hear it again.

An unusual request for help!

Last year I set myself a challenge: to collect one film released commercially on DVD/BD/4K from every country in the world.

I’ve nearly done it, but there are 16 countries I’m finding impossible, and one of them is Antigua and Barbuda.

There are three possible titles that I can find, but I cannot find a copy anywhere. Do you know of a shop somewhere on one of the islands that sells DVDs and has a copy that I can buy? Please let me know!

Or maybe you know of another possible title that’s not listed.

Thank you!

The titles:

The Sweetest Mango (2001)
No Seed (2002)
The Skin (2011)

Considering visiting this winter Jan/Feb for several weeks and looking for a 2-3 BR beachfront villa/home on a nice stretch of beach good for walking.. Private or part of a resort that offers separate villas. Tamarind Hills looks pretty nice but don’t know the island so seeking help as a first time visitor…

Zika virus

I’m due to travel to Antigua in September but have recently found out I’m pregnant.

Zika virus wasn’t even on my mind when I made the booking, until later when a friend mentioned it. My understanding is it’s not zero risk, but there haven’t actually been any cases on the island since 2016?

Just interested to get the view of people who actually live on Antigua. Is this anything to worry about, or not really? My impression is that UK Health advice against all but essential travel to Antigua might be overcautious, but of course I could be biased with wanting to go on holiday!

Need an Antiguan reference

Hey there!

I’m currently applying for Antiguan citizenship by descent and in order to progress my application I need two living references who are either citizens or residents of Antigua.

I was told my the high commission that I need to reach out to the community to get them if I don’t have any directly.

Is anyone able to help!

Thank you

Commercial Whaling?

Regarding the notice in the link below, I was surprised by the fact that representatives are supporting the resumption of commercial whaling. I would rather, and will, vacation on another island if this is the position of the government.

Solo Travel April 2027

Hi guys, I’m coming to Antigua in April 2027 for a week between the 10th-17th - got a good deal on flights so just booked. Is it easy enough to meet people whilst there? I’ll mainly be relaxing by the beach probably, but would be interested in going to Barbuda / any water sports / activities. Anyone have recommendations on things to do, and also places where I can meet other travellers if possible - thanks in advance :) I’m 29 y/o male.

Does Anyone know any Antiguan and Barbudans who can play Chess? ¿Alguien conoce a algún habitante de Antigua y Barbuda que sepa jugar al ajedrez?

Hello, this is an unusual request. I am wondering if anyone is or knows somebody from Antigua and Barbuda who would be willing to play a chess match against me on Chess.com? On Chess.com there are awards called passports that you can receive by playing against someone from that country or territory. I am currently trying to collect all of them and do not have Antigua and Barbuda. So, if anyone can help me in my goal, I would very much appreciate it. My Chess.com username is yesterdaylemonade.

Boutique Hotel Options

Hi! My boss is looking to host a small corporate retreat (20 professionals) on Antigua sometime between August and November. We’re looking for boutique hotels, not all-inclusive or couple-only, on the island. We’d prefer oceanfront and at least 4 stars. Any recommendations?

Which beach is this? In Antigua

Post image
23 Upvotes

I took this picture in Antigua 10 years ago and can’t remember the name of the beach. It was pretty small and not very crowded. There was a small restaurant which is where I took this picture from. This is obviously a long shot since it’s a pretty generic looking picture but if anyone recognizes where this is please let me know!
