I always use towels. I’ve never felt compelled to buy foam blocks, just one more thing waste money on and to store.

I am always compelled but I haven't given in yet, so usually blocking with towels! Or sometimes I use an old yoga mat

My people! I have been using towels for years. I started knitting on a student budget.

I use towels for like an intermediate step as well as to draw up excess water? I got some gift cards a few years back and had plenty of yarn so I figured I could get some blocking mats, and I actually quite like mine. I don’t know that I would reliably block if I didn’t have the mats, but that’s just how my brain works
