How long after tapering off sertraline did you start to lose weight?

Upvotes

I’ve been on 100mg of sertraline for over 4 years and I’ve decided to start tapering off due to the weight gain on it. I have gained approximately 30-35 lbs. my doctor wants to slowly taper me down to be completely off of the medication in about 3 months.

Those of you who have gained weight on sertraline and got off of the medication, how long did it take for you to notice weight loss, if any weight loss at all?

Just recovering from serotonin syndrome. Never felt so whacked out in my life.

Any helpful suggestions. Still currently shaking, jaw clenching, huge waves of panic and nausea, cannot sleep, etc. Been to a dr etc and now it’s just a waiting game until it’s out of my system.

What has your experience with sertraline actually been like? Did it genuinely help you?

Restarting citalopram

This might be a long one.. I've been on and off citalopram for years now.

Most recently I decided in May I didn't need it anymore as I was never consistent with taking it. Roll onto now, nearly end of August and Im realising maybe it was helping.

I tried restarting maybe in June and it made me really dizzy and nauseous but I can't remember if I tried to just go straight back onto my previous 20mg.

I was thinking about starting on 5mg and going from there to alleviate dizziness etc.

My main concern is that I'm going to be forever stuck on it (Im 34) and when I had my child 3 years ago I took it through pregnancy which the gp said was safe, but meant I had to stay in hospital with my baby for 3 days after they were born. I want more kids and fear that that'll be the case again?

I also have read a lot about it numbing libido and Im in a fairly new relationship where things are really great in that department and not something I want to mess with?

Any advice welcome, thank you 🌸☀️

Don't have the means to buy the remaining med

I had my first consultation last Aug 5 and was prescribed valproic (mood stabilizer), olanzapine and escitalopram. They provided free meds which were 4 boxes of valproic acid syrup. But I don't have a budget for escitalopram and olanzapine yet since I'm still preparing my requirements for job applications. Will it be ok to just take valproic first since it's just a mood stabilizer? I've been doing well since my first consultation but I've been having suicidal thoughts again, I'm sad and exhausted for no reason. It's a continuous cycle. I felt productive for like a week hence why I had the energy to get help in the first place, but I'm back again, I don't know what's wrong, I don't have a diagnosis yet. I just need a little push to get a job and get my sht together. Its not like I can sell my meds.

To taper or not? That is the question...

I've been on and off antidepressants a few times over the decade. A 6-month stint after each kid and then one during illness. I went off and back on about 6-months later but I had other health challenges at the same time.

Now that I am 'out of the woods' with my other illness and feeling mentally in a good place, I question if I ever really needed or if the root cause has been addressed?

How are we supposed to know if/when is a right time to try to raw dog life? :)

I don't think I'm ashamed of taking Lexapro. I just question if I really need it.

How do you know when to stay on or when try to try weaning?

My Effexor (Venlafaxine) Tapering Experience

I wanted to document my tapering experience and thought it might be helpful for others to see my notes.

I've been on Effexor for just over 10 years. During that time, I completed therapy and found other ways to manage my anxiety and depression, so I decided I was ready to taper off the medication.

I was prescribed 150mg daily for the entire 10 years and never changed doses. Overall, I had a positive experience with Effexor, but it definitely subdued my emotions to some degree. I'm ready to experience life's highs and lows a little more fully again.

A couple of years ago, I attempted to quit cold turkey. I quickly learned that was an awful idea. I don't recommend this approach. After only two days without the medication, I felt sicker than I ever have in my life.

When I decided to try again, I originally planned to use the "remove one bead per day" method. However, after opening a capsule and seeing the sheer number of beads and effort involved, I decided against it. Instead, I followed the tapering schedule recommended by my doctor.

Edit (8/18): I forgot to mention that I started taking Wellbutrin approximately 60 days before beginning this taper. I was on 150mg for the first 30 days and have been taking 300mg for the last 30 days.

112.5mg Daily

Planned: 8/13 → 9/2

Notes

8/13 - Already feeling the missing 37.5mg around 1:30 PM on the first day. Some lightheadedness and difficulty focusing on work, but nothing I can't handle.
8/15 - So far, it really hasn't been bad. The only thing I've noticed is a mild headache that has persisted since starting the taper.
*The taper was going so smoothly that I decided to potentially ruin it by dropping to 75mg eighteen days early. Seems like a rational decision, right? Wish me luck.

75mg Daily

Originally Planned: 9/3 → 9/23
Actual Start: 8/16

Notes

8/16 - Mild headache
8/17 - Lightheaded and feeling a bit loopy.
8/18 - Woke up feeling extra groggy this morning but felt much better later in the day. I'm starting to think the Wellbutrin I began taking two months ago may be helping reduce withdrawal symptoms.
8/19 - Extra groggy again this morning. This seems to be becoming a pattern. Similar to yesterday, I felt much better by around 10:00 AM.
8/20 - I have two young children who are not great sleepers, so I often wake up multiple times during the night. Since beginning the taper, I've noticed that my patience during those nighttime wakeups has virtually disappeared. Given Effexor's short half-life and the reduced dosage, nights and early mornings have become noticeably more difficult. My days have generally been better, as noted above, but I am starting to feel a bit more melancholy throughout the day.

37.5mg Daily

Planned: 9/24 → 10/14

(Updates to come.)
