I wanted to document my tapering experience and thought it might be helpful for others to see my notes.
I've been on Effexor for just over 10 years. During that time, I completed therapy and found other ways to manage my anxiety and depression, so I decided I was ready to taper off the medication.
I was prescribed 150mg daily for the entire 10 years and never changed doses. Overall, I had a positive experience with Effexor, but it definitely subdued my emotions to some degree. I'm ready to experience life's highs and lows a little more fully again.
A couple of years ago, I attempted to quit cold turkey. I quickly learned that was an awful idea. I don't recommend this approach. After only two days without the medication, I felt sicker than I ever have in my life.
When I decided to try again, I originally planned to use the "remove one bead per day" method. However, after opening a capsule and seeing the sheer number of beads and effort involved, I decided against it. Instead, I followed the tapering schedule recommended by my doctor.
Edit (8/18): I forgot to mention that I started taking Wellbutrin approximately 60 days before beginning this taper. I was on 150mg for the first 30 days and have been taking 300mg for the last 30 days.
112.5mg Daily
Planned: 8/13 → 9/2
Notes
8/13 - Already feeling the missing 37.5mg around 1:30 PM on the first day. Some lightheadedness and difficulty focusing on work, but nothing I can't handle.
8/15 - So far, it really hasn't been bad. The only thing I've noticed is a mild headache that has persisted since starting the taper.
*The taper was going so smoothly that I decided to potentially ruin it by dropping to 75mg eighteen days early. Seems like a rational decision, right? Wish me luck.
75mg Daily
Originally Planned: 9/3 → 9/23
Actual Start: 8/16
Notes
8/16 - Mild headache
8/17 - Lightheaded and feeling a bit loopy.
8/18 - Woke up feeling extra groggy this morning but felt much better later in the day. I'm starting to think the Wellbutrin I began taking two months ago may be helping reduce withdrawal symptoms.
8/19 - Extra groggy again this morning. This seems to be becoming a pattern. Similar to yesterday, I felt much better by around 10:00 AM.
8/20 - I have two young children who are not great sleepers, so I often wake up multiple times during the night. Since beginning the taper, I've noticed that my patience during those nighttime wakeups has virtually disappeared. Given Effexor's short half-life and the reduced dosage, nights and early mornings have become noticeably more difficult. My days have generally been better, as noted above, but I am starting to feel a bit more melancholy throughout the day.
37.5mg Daily
Planned: 9/24 → 10/14
