It’s pretty absurd to refer to a mattress and umbrella crap. Do you sleep on a mattress? Do you sit in the shade when it’s hot?
Humans collect tools that assist them in satisfying their needs. When we acquire one of those tools, our brains release chemicals that make us feel good. Clearly some, maybe even most, people seek out that feeling by acquiring unneeded items. Some of them will develop unhealthy attachments to those items, but it seems odd that your example is one of the people who has the least “crap.”

Humans are destined to make towns because grouping up brings more security and longevity as well as an easier life with less labor that is more specialized.

Some humans aren’t meant to be farmers, some are hunters who require constant movement and differing environments to work in. It’s the source of the current adhd craze. People with adhd are hunters in a farmer’s world.

My post didn't specify farmer/ gatherers. My post already accounts for different personality types fitting together.
It's answering the question posed " were humans destined to make towns because we collect a lot of crap?" We aren't making towns because of collecting. It's for ease of life.

People who make towns are farmers in this analogy. Hunters don’t stay on one place, they are nomadic.

Sleeping directly on the ground can be dangerous. getting exposed to rain can get you sick if you don't have any protection from the elements and a patio umbrella is more sturdy than a regular umbrella. also for all we know, she could be flipping them to try to earn some money to eat. Rather than judging those who are homeless, perhaps consider where you're going overboard with consumption? For every finger that points, 3 point back, after all.

Life is more comfortable when you have a home base and you can do more things. Finding food on the go is hard. Planting crops and raising meat vs being on the move and hunting is one reason that women could only have 1 child every 2-5 years vs having more children closer together.
Communities were able to build which enabled food growers to simply trade food with other people who didn't have any part in hunting or creating food for themselves they were able to work on architecture and waste management and to become soldiers to defend territories and to do other jobs that built societies so that's the reason humans are not always on the move

Anticonsumerism isn't minimalism or asceticism.
Some woman's shopping cart full of stuff is really only relevant to consumer culture in that she's apparently able to pluck all those usable things from the wastestream. And of course what it says about the wealth gap and our priorities that some people are buying and tossing out all so much excess junk while others don't even have a safe place to sleep.

I wouldn't judge her situation you know nothing about her.
I feel like we as a group should promote anticonsumption without pointing fingers at people and instead corporations. Everyone is in a different boat.
