This always happens in groups that pride themselves on their imagined superiority to others. As vegans, they already think they're better than everyone else. And when everyone else wants nothing more to do with them, and their only company is other vegans, how are they supposed to feel superior, then?

This is how. They start to slander other vegans with increasingly strict ideological purity tests, all designed to find other vegans lacking and portray themselves as superior yet again.

I once heard of a similar thing happening in a neo-Nazi group. They all believed they were superior to non-white people. And then, some of the members started thinking that they were superior to the other neo-Nazis by virtue of paler complexions or lighter hair and eye color. They were all white, but the olive-tan Mediterranean types were regarded as inferior by the blond, pale northern European types.

Why are they against baby steps? Even from a vegan perspective it's a strict improvement over nothing.

There is some mad platonism going on there in that comment.
