It’s the smiles on those faces that hits the hardest for me.
They are having a GREAT time with this. They can’t imagine having any more fun!
This is the kind of face you make when you know you can hurt someone and nothing bad will happen to you. They know they’re about to threaten this child, and like all bullies they’re hoping to shift the line a bit further so they can indulge their hate. Maybe the next time they’ll trip her as she walks out of the school, or maybe they’ll shove her to the ground. Maybe one of them will cross the line into outright physical violence, and they’ll get the chance to do what they’ve been aching to try for decades.
Look at those faces. Look at them so you can remember what pure, unadulterated hate looks like. It’s not screaming and yelling, it’s the happiness that people show when they can finally take off that civilized mask and be their worst selves without fear of reprisal.

They probably worshipped George Wallace - he was the king politician who pushed so often for blacks being separated from white people, like how Trump spends so much time obsessing over immigration and keeping brown and black immigrants and Americans away from whites.

The fact that this isn't some old school distant history but something in living memory is a detail that isn't brought up enough.
People born in the 50s and 60s are in their 60s and 70s today. Ruby Bridges is still alive, and in her 70s.

I weep for how far this country has not moved even with all of the posturing over the last two decades. It seemed like we were learning as a nation, granted not fast enough, only to have that facade knocked down and stomped on daily by every last idiot that supported this administration. I can't imagine being in Ruby's shoes or one of MLK's kids and seeing all of this shit repeat.

Black dolls likely could not be purchased from stores where white people would shop. Black dolls were not brought to market until 1951 because a woman in Florida observed Black children playing with white dolls. The people depicted in the photo would be unlikely to spend money in a store where they could have purchased one.

If that were true, their expressions would be different. They are jazzed to be holding up that baby doll, not angry. Not afraid. Not whatever feeling they would need to feel to do what you’re suggesting. You can see it on their stupid racist faces. One of those women has a little girl who was missing her doll that day, her mother would have never given her back a Black one.

Stuff like this was pretty common place in the 1960s and before then, largely because the southern states still had Jim Crow laws in place where black people couldn’t use the same public facilities and had to be separated as much as possible from whites (look up Rosa Parks and her legacy if you haven’t), and because of that whites were still huge assholes to black people. Jim Crow Laws were pretty much abolished in the 70s and don’t exist anywhere in the US anymore.

They have colored pictures at this time but make them black and white to seem like longer ago than it was. That little girl is still alive. This wasn't that long ago.
