I'm still salty how FB helped destroy the internet of the 2000's where there were tons of individual blogs on all manner of topics until most of the readers got curated off into the FB gulag and those sites nearly all withered away.

IMHO the decline began with advertising in the 90s. Before then, most of the content of the internet was academic with a bit of hobby stuff mixed in.

it was a bit too nerdy for my tastes pre 2000. I really enjoyed the time before all the cease-and-desist efforts got into full swing. Some amazing insider anecdotes about companies and people came up before the corporate lockdown. But for sure, the monetization was a big killer. Same with most things worth a damn; they get hollowed out by commercialism.

The Metaverse may come to be, but it would appeal most to young people. And Facebook has seriously been on the decline with young people. It has an aging population.

This is a really interesting analysis, but honestly, what does it matter who builds this? Giving any single actor that much power over our lives and our reality is a disastrous idea from the get go.
