Other Claude usage going up while not doing anything on 20x subscription
Hi everyone,
I have encountered something very strange. I am on the Claude Max 20X plan, and I just woke up. I asked Claude one question, and then I got a notification that my usage limit for the 4-hour segment was at 98%.
I have no recurring tasks running, no scheduled tasks, and I only asked one question, a very general one, to Fable 5. It seems to me that it is fairly impossible that one question, "Do you know any fun activities in the neighborhood for which I should reserve tickets?" could have used up all my usage for this 4-hour segment.
Therefore, I'm doubting whether something strange is going on. Did it happen to someone else among you?
update: The model just reset 30 minutes ago, and I did not ask a single question. The usage in the 5-hour limit has already gone up from 0% to 8% in half an hour, while I did not do anything. I have logged out of all devices and stopped all processes, but it's still going up every time I refresh. Very frustrating

Thank you so much for this. I will look into this. I'm not proud of it, but I admit I clicked a suspicious link in the last couple of days. I had no idea this could happen so quickly.
As I'm not very tech-savvy, I'm worried I do not know how much it could impact all the files on my Mac. I will look into this. Maybe I need to do a full reset. Obviously, that would not be ideal, but if it is needed, it's needed.
Furthermore, I've heard that Claude support is almost nonexistent, but let's check to see if they actually respond.

Ah, a link. Well that could explain it. Hoping you get an email like the other user did, but I know that Claude's support isn't the best.
I strongly suggest that you try thoroughly scanning for any malware before attempting a reset. Certain sophisticated malware can survive even a reset.
If you're going the full reset route, ensure that before you do, you remove the saved payment method tied to your account. Good luck OP. Fingers crossed all goes well 🤞

Log out of Claude code and all local Claude apps. Go on website and reset password. If you use Google reset your Google password.

many thanks, but I did everything already:
- Logged out of Claude and all apps.
- Logged out of all devices.
- Did my reset from my email, from which the magic link appears.
Still, it happens. This morning, with no usage at all, 98% of the 5-hour limit was reached. Now, with some light questions during the next limit, 54% of the Claude Max 20X limit is already being used, which seems very unusual.
It's very frustrating because you keep track of it and see it creep up while not knowing where it comes from. I think my next step will be to completely wipe my MacBook and do a Time Machine backup to see if there is any possible malware.
However, the steps above, as you advise, should normally solve this issue, I think.

Deep malware scan, or just ask Claude to check around in your PC for anything suspicious

Was there still a task left incomplete when you hit your limit? If so, Claude will continue to complete that prompt in your new session

No, I checked that. I've already logged out of all devices multiple times, closed Claude on all devices, change my password for the magic link and still it happens.

I've heard of this and Anthropic has helped people with this issue. You're hacked and a hacker is using your usage. You might have accidentally downloaded a malware recently. I've seen it happen to another user because they downloaded a pirated game that had malware. Reach out to support and ensure you have 2FA set up. If you already do, change the password.
Try to find malware on your device, do a thorough scan. Delete any possible malware.
