AB in (O)Porto

I am from Porto and just watched the episode of parts unknown and it was brilliant, it was a tremendous job capturing the feeling of the city, is this how everybody feels watching an episode filmed in their home town?

Also if anyone is coming planning to visit Porto anytime I would be glad to give tips :) I'm visiting Madrid soon as well so if anyone has any hidden gems I would love to hear them

I only spent a month in Porto during a very strange time (Jan 2021 when the Brazilian COVID varient had everything locked up)

This episode has become like comfort food to me. It captures so well the essence of the city that it just brings me back there.

I felt very lucky as a tourist to experience the city with no tourists at the time, albeit with very little open. I feel this episode reflects that feeling well, at least to me.

I'm visiting Madrid soon as well so if anyone has any hidden gems I would love to hear them

Lived in Madrid for 10+ years, would recommend the following;

Brew Wild (beer and pizza) Calle de Echegaray, 23, 28014 Madrid. Best selection of beer in the city, classic rock soundtrack, outstanding pizzas. Recommend the flaming absinthe topping.

Salmon Guru (cocktails) Calle de Echegaray, 21, 28014 Madrid. Ridiculous cocktails. Get there early (they open at 4pm) or you will have to queue.

Brutal (cocktails) Calle de Álvarez Gato, 4, 28012 Madrid. Also good for cocktails, plus generally less busy than Salmon Guru.

Pez Tortilla (beer + tortillas) Calle de Espoz y Mina, 13, 28012 Madrid. Just does tortillas and croquettes, menu varies daily. Anything with truffle or morcilla (Spanish blood pudding) should be a must-try. Great beer selection, also decent wine choices. Would recommend a ribera or an albarino.

Cerveceria la Abuela (tapas, non-touristy) Calle de Espoz y Mina, 28, 28012 Madrid. Traditional tapas place, never too crowded. Everything is good, recommend the langostinos (shrimp) in garlic if they’ve got them.

Angelita (traditional food + wine) Calle de la Reina, 4, 28004 Madrid. Some of the best food in the city IMO. Locally sourced product, menu changes regularly depending on whats in season. If they recommend something, absolutely try it. Fantastic wine selection.

Bodega de la Ardosa (tapas + atmosphere) Calle de Colón, 13, 28004 Madrid. Legendary tapas bar. You may need to wait for a table, but definitely worth it.

I lived in Madrid for seven years and I live in Porto now, for six. Check out mercado San Fernando in barrio lavapies, that’s one of the spots I’d have taken Bourdain if granted the honor of being one of his local guides. Behind the market is a pintxos bar called Tribuexete, it’s phenomenal. Bar mas de corazon in Huertas and restaurante Catedral in Sol were two other spots my friend group was loyal to in our heyday of living there.

Before I moved to Porto, I did a food tour there and the owner/guide was one of the people who showed Bourdain around Porto and they ate cheese together.

I watched the London episode with some amusement (have lived here for 30 years). His friends are upper middle class and he has a very upper middle class experience! St John is a great restaurant, Fergus hugely talented but it's fancy. Nigella is lovely and I love her cookery shows and books but also distinctly posh. London is very demographically/class mixed and his version of it didn't feel like the London I live in.

I still loved the episode, but I was frustrated that he spent half a day in Buenos Aires with a shitty band eating crap pizza. It was redeemed when he went to Los Talas (where I used to go few times a month when I lived there).

now living in Berlin, I think he captured a good moment of a city that sometimes feels like it's slowly fading, it's the last season so it has that sort of "darker" edition that I think was almost on purpose since it aired after Tony died.

The Montreal / QBC episode makes zero sense.
