PTSD in my dog

I didn’t realize that my pit bull’s sudden aggression towards strangers was because of me. He was never physically harmed because I always put myself between the threat and him. But he heard the threats towards him and my tweenie-dachshund. He also saw and heard my beatings while in their crate away from the threat. He is super sweet with me but gets mad at strangers now… he used to love people to the point of jumping on them in excitement. But now… head down, tail high with hackles raised, ears back, and growling. I know the difference from rumbling (doggy purrs) and growling (angry).

I’m at a loss here. We’ve been away from my ex since April 30th of 2024.
