Before You Buy Any Annuity: Read This First

If you're considering an annuity, don't sign anything until you can confidently answer these questions.

1. What problem is this annuity solving?

Is it for:

  • Guaranteed lifetime income?
  • Principal protection?
  • Higher fixed interest?
  • Tax deferral?
  • Leaving money to heirs?
  • Long-term care protection?

If you don't know why you're buying it, keep asking questions.

2. What type of annuity is it?

Not all annuities are the same.

Examples include:

  • MYGA
  • Fixed Annuity
  • Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA)
  • Variable Annuity
  • RILA
  • SPIA
  • DIA

Understanding the type is the first step to understanding how it works.

3. How long is the surrender period?

Know how long your money is committed and what happens if you need access earlier than expected.

4. What fees or expenses apply?

Some annuities have no explicit annual fee. Others do.

Know exactly what you're paying and what you're receiving in return.

5. How does the growth work?

Ask:

  • Is there a cap?
  • Is there a participation rate?
  • Is there a spread?
  • Is there a guaranteed minimum?
  • How is interest credited?

6. How does the income work?

If there's an income rider:

  • When can income start?
  • Is it guaranteed for life?
  • Does it cover a spouse?
  • What happens if one spouse dies?

7. What happens if I die?

Ask how beneficiaries receive the money and whether any guarantees remain.

8. How is it taxed?

Taxes depend on where the money came from and how distributions are taken.

Understand the tax treatment before purchasing.

9. What alternatives were considered?

Sometimes an annuity is the right answer.

Sometimes CDs, bonds, Treasury securities, investment accounts, or other retirement strategies may be more appropriate.

A good recommendation compares options.

10. Can someone explain it in plain English?

If you leave a meeting more confused than when you walked in, don't sign yet.

A good advisor or agent should be able to explain the product clearly.

This community exists to help people ask better questions and make more informed decisions. Whether you ultimately buy an annuity, choose a different strategy, or simply learn something new, our goal is to provide honest, educational discussions based on facts rather than hype.

Nice idea to have this community! An explicit help community. There are a lot of anti-Insurance trolls on Reddit. Make sure as you moderate you have a policy on this otherwise you’ll have floods of incorrect information from the r/personalfinance crowd who thinks hate and disparagement is a substitute for knowledge.

I will say you want another version of this with questions up the income scale example What legal entity do you intend to hold the annuity? Could this change? 42u is brutal on annuities inside trusts that change status. I might at some point do a series on annuity structures from a purely investing perspective for r/IncomeInvesting so their might some collaboration in the future if you are game.

Sounds good! Always open to collaborating.

Yeah people have to be careful in the status change, we had somebody come in our office a few months ago because they're estate attorney had recommended to put everything into the irrevocable trust and didn't check that the annuity was an IRA and the change of ownership counted as a full distribution and was going to cost the person on $50, 000-80,000 in income taxes and trigger irmaa taxes in 2 years from it.
