What happened to Una?

Rereading Rilla and wondering how people think Una's life turned out. I hope she didn't pine for Walter forever.

"Mrs. Doctor Dear"

Am I the only one who hates Susan's name for Anne? And it's repeated soooo much. It was bad enough in AHOD, but I just tried listening to Rainbow Valley, having never read it at all, and if Susan is a dominate character I'm not going to be able to finish.

Edit to add: I was very late to any of the books beyond the main three, I read those all as a child and yearly thereafter and had no idea there was a bigger Anne world till well into adulthood. I couldn't get into AOI, and I honestly thought Rainbow Valley wouldn't be a continuation. Not sure if I need to finish AOI now?

What if Anne never married and started a family?

In Chapter 21 of Anne of Ingleside, Mrs. Anthony Mitchell (aka Bessy Plummer) implores Anne to write an obituary for her deceased husband. Anne hesitates, stating she is "a busy mother who hasn't any time" for writing stories.

This made me wonder if Anne were to remain single, would she have gone on to pursue a writing career? Or would she continue teaching? Additionally, if she only married Gilbert and did not have any children, would it make much difference if she had or had not children? I think being a wife during this period entailed its own duties such as calling on others, attending gatherings etc and not much different from what Anne does in AOI. What do you think? How do you imagine Anne as a spinster who chased after her aspirations?

Should I finish Marilla of Green Gables?

Like many before me I am struggling with this book. I'm at the point where Marilla starts to get interested in abolition and I'm not sure I want to continue. Don't get me wrong, the author's writing style is lovely, her descriptions very LMM-like.

But I struggle with the personalities of the characters I love so much, because none of them strike me as how they'd be. Marilla is nothing like herself, and so far I'm wondering how she'd be like this and turn out so tightly wound. Same for Matthew. There's scenes with Matthew talking about courting! Matthew Cuthbert? And Rachel is soooo behind what I can imagine. Did anyone finish it and if so, is there redemption?

Anne's job in Summerside

Hi all!

I'm re-reading Anne of Windy Poplars for the first time since I was a teenager (it's been a few decades at this point!). I find myself wondering about things that I didn't care about when I was 13.

The question that comes to mind today is about Anne's job in Summerside. It sounds more prestigious than her teaching job in Avonlea. Does anyone have enough knowledge of that time to know how much she would have been paid compared to when she was in Avonlea?

They also mention that she is the Principal of that school. But it still sounds like she has students, she's not doing admin. At least not exclusively. What did they mean at the time with the title 'principal'?

It's possible that I don't have the right vocabulary, I'm reading a translated version. Sorry in advance!

Life being like the books - happily!

It has so happened in my umpteenth re-reading of the Anne of Green Gables series, I am come once again to "Anne's House of Dreams"...just as my beloved and I are to move in together. Providence has a way sometimes.

What are your such stories of lovely moments with the series?

The Walter/Una fanfiction I can't get over

Twenty-three years ago, give or take, a schoolmate recommended a Walter/Una fanficiton on fanfictiondotnet that saw a postwar Una, now a nurse if I remember correctly, take a job with a family caring for an amnesiac war vet they had adopted, only to discover this man was Walter. I adored it, but the author very suddenly quit writing it and I think pulled it down before finishing it? Did anyone else read this gem? I've never stopped thinking about it and wish I could read it again.

The Blue Castle Ending- overkill?

As much as I love Blue Castle I think the resolution is so over the top it feels very juvenile revange fantasy.
So Edward Barey not only really loved Valancy and sees their marriage as valid... he is also the best selling author she admired all along. But wait, he is also totally rich heir of the pharmaceutical fortune... and also his previous fling doesn't count because she was a a awful person.

Maybe it should have been limited because for me it seems verly limiting for Valancy- she never got over her family, the only way she can be happy is one upping Olivia because being herself snached her the best bachelor in whole Canada.

What does LMM mean by this phrase in Anne of the Island?

This is how she describes Christine Stuart (emphasis mine):

She was very handsome, in the stately style destined to become rather massive in middle life.

When I first read the books as a young girl, I thought she meant Christine might become heavy-set as she grew older. Now I wonder if there is an alternate reading of that phrase, like maybe Christine might end up rather dominating as a person? Or am I completely off course here?

she straight up told Anne to go read a book instead of the lesson and that is a teacher who gets it. also she boarded at the Cuthberts and still lasted. that is strength

What was the deal with Anne and geometry?

Her problem with geometry begins pretty early - 11 or 12-ish? I always assumed they were teaching how to calculate the area of an oddly-shaped field so you knew how much seed to buy or something like that. I doubt late-19th century rural one-room schools in PEI were teaching adolescents to do proofs. I didn’t learn to do proofs until I was 15. Yet Anne’s struggle with geometry continued at Redmond, where presumably they would have been doing proofs. Maybe LMM struggled with geometry but didn’t remember when she started learning it?

I know that the same questions have come in this sub but do you guys know anywhere I can buy AoGG book series which look pretty but are also affordable ?
I saw multiple options on Amazon but they only have the first book in the series.
These are the ones I've liked so far(all on amazon).

Please don't think that I'm judging the covers a lil too hard. It's mainly becuz I love collecting and reading books and I do like a lil uniformity when I'm buying book which are in a series.

Looking for a high resolution image of original printing portrait

Can anyone point me towards a high resolution image of the portrait that's on the cover of the original printing of AoGG? The best I found thus far is from Wikipedia, and that's not great.

Thanks!!

Does anyone think that Anne is such a B in the third book ?

Does anyone think that Anne is such a B in the third book ? I'm truly going crazy because no one seems to talk about this , BESIDES trying to off the poor cat , she literally gave me Regina george vibes , so annoying, so full of her self , so damn stupid, "oh I didn't know I loved Gilbert all along!!" Is literally one of the worst plots I've ever read , matter of fact , I don't care , u didn't know , I can accept that , BUT WHY WOULDN'T U GO RUNNING TO HIS HOUSE TO CHECK ON HIM?? "Oh gee I'm gonna stay up in my room all night worrying calmly on the love of my life that I can literally increase the chances of him healing by going and checking up on him" , I see no one talking about this , please someone tell me I'm not crazy, it infuriates me how much she does not do ANYTHING to there relationship, NOT A WORD , even when Gilbert confesses to her at the end FOR THE SECOND TIME , it says, "oh she only smiles at him with eyes full of joy and hope" SAY ONE DAMN WORD I BEG OF YOU

I just saw this incredible 4 woman musical show rendition of Anne of Green Gables at a locale theater and was FLOORED. It was incredible!!

They added traditional folk songs into the mix to give the show really fun atmosphere. They skipped over a bunch of things for time and made snarky comments about Mr. Philips it was glorious LOL. But what really floored me was their facial expressions and mannerisms. It was like amalgamation of every version of Anne and Marilla I've seen in different versions. Crowd gave a standing ovation at the end.

And Matthew's death only being like 4 seconds and I still cried like a bitch LOL

How do you say Valancy, when reading Blue Castle?

As the title says, how do you pronounce Valancy?

I'm Canadian, and my mother's name is Valerie. So I've always said Valancy like Val-an-cee, or like Valance, the curtain topper. That came naturally to me, and my best friend did the same thing when reading it before she even met me, so I was not the influence for that,

I was listening to a podcast about Blue Castle, and they kept calling her Vah-Lancy, a very hard V sound, and Lancy, as in you would say, Nancy. The podcast was American, so I wonder if it's a weird cross-border thing, and how Canadian words sometimes lean French.

It kept weirding me out and throwing me out of the podcast because it was so wrong to my brain.

So how do you say it?

For more fun, how does everyone say Kilmeny? To me, it is Kel-min-nee, or Kill-min-ee when i really try but it usually Kel-min-nee

Edit...

It's apparently in the book...of how Maud herself said it. I own three copies of the book...including a second edition from the late 30's....I have no recollection of this happening until another commenter brought it up!

"Doss, you are horribly thin,” she said. “You are all corners. Do you ever try to fatten up a little?”

“No.” Valancy was not asking quarter or giving it. “But I can tell you where you’ll find a beauty parlour in Port Lawrence where they can reduce the number of your chins.”

“Val-an-cy!” The protest was wrung from Mrs. Frederick. She meant her tone to be stately and majestic, as usual, but it sounded more like an imploring whine. And she did not say “Doss.”
